Distinct sounding and almost similar to older Bose models. The tuning emphasizes the lower end, while giving plenty of space for for the higher frequencies to give way to excellent detail. The middle could be improved and hopefully apple will update the DSP to allow for this.
I enjoy the sound, especially for movies and live music that captures the feel of a small venue. I’d love to hear 2 of these in stereo mode and I’ve read that this is when the HomePod really stands out.
Connectivity is all taken care of by Apple and it integrates with more recent versions of specific apples iPads and Apple TV’s without effort or disruption. But, at last check, regular Bluetooth from non apple devices or non Apple sources wasn’t available. I heard this might be updated and definitely check out the latest official description before counting the HomePod out.
I purchased it with same day delivery from bestbuy and was impressed with the service and the price, which was $100 less than the standard rate from Apple and elsewhere.
I think it is a great speaker. But if you are picky about audio quality, you will want 2 and want to pair them for stereo sound. It is mono on its own, despite the array of tweeters, middles and single woofer.
I’ve read reviews about the google speaker with the same functions but all googled out critics say that is the speaker to beat in this range. That surprises me, but makes me want to bend an ear to the google speaker because if it sounds better than the Apple, it might sound better than just about all options in the $200-$400 range and beyond.

I purchased a HomePod on launch day and have listened to more music since that day than ever before. I used to use Spotify, but it was never convenient to make my own playlists. I did not like Spotify’s playlists or radio, but Apple Music via Siri has been great! The radio stations stick to the genre better, and it is easy to trigger them anywhere in room with voice.
Classical and jazz music sound great coming from the HomePod. The highs are very clear and the bass is solid but not too boomy. I also have a Google Home Max, so can compare both speakers. The Max has bigger woofers so it sounds better with HipHop / Rap or Electronic Dance Music.
There is more bass on the Max, but the highs aren’t as clear as the HomePod. I decide to keep both... I use the HomePod mostly for quiet and calm music such as classical or jazz, and use AirPlay to stream from YouTube, Tidal, take phone calls, etc.
I now use the Max for more party type music and asking Google questions. The mics on the HomePod are better than Max and can hear me at full volume, but the Max cannot hear at full volume unfortunately.
I recommend the HomePod with a Google Home Mini on side if music quality is primary focus and don’t need a lot of bass and want some additinal smart features. Eventually maybe HomePod Siri will be able to handle questions better and won’t need a Google Home product also, but for now the sound is good enough alone to justify keeping it.

First thing -- Apple HomePod is meant for Apple Music subscribers and those who want to listen to music in their house in the background every day, while cooking, working, playing, relaxing and anything else you do at home where music can enhance an activity. (Dancing like no one is watching included.) Second, it is the most useful if you have Apple and/or HomeKit products. You will need an iPhone or iPad to even set it up.
Siri may not be the brightest, but frankly I don't need to order an Uber, buy Amazon stuff sight unseen or have a pressing need to know a Ferret's average length. I love the HomePod so much I bought two! Yes, I am anxious for Apple to update the software for stereo and house connected music playing, but I am ok with waiting because I get so much benefit from it now.
It is liberating to be able to play music - any kind I wish to hear at any volume I desire - by simply asking Siri. I love adding reminders, using the timer and alarms, and, yes, I have asked Siri to do a measurement calculation for me while I am cooking. I have Hue lights throughout the house and it is wonderful to just speak into the air and have the lights turn off or on. Does anyone really need the convenience ? Of course not. But once you get used to integrating "Hey Siri ...." into your daily life, it feels like it has always been that way. A small step towards the Jetson's way of life. Now if only I could purchase a flying car...

Best sounding “smart speaker”

First of all to all it’s so sad that most people don’t appreciate good sound quality when I see reviews comparing these speakers to Amazon Echo or Google Home (except the Google Max) it makes me cringe, I can’t even sample a song A song in any those it’s comparing apples and oranges I can’t believe people listen to music in those things... I know cause I also have the Google Home. Now these: single or stereo create IMHO the best soundstage of any bookshelf speaker “smart or not “ under $500. Even at $350 ea ($700 pair) you won’t find anything better or even close for under $1000 and most likely you will have to add a subwoofer just to replicate the bass tonality these HomePod are capable of producing. I bought a pair on sale for $200 ea ($400 pair)
To me that was a steal, a no brainer. And yes I’m aware of the lack of Bluetooth accessibility and the only Apple Music could be play using Siri, but you could AirPlay anything else and there’s no difference in sound quality in fact that’s the way I usually use these. My advice if you’re inclined to buy these and you see them on sale for less than retail just snatch them you won’t regret it ;)

The HomePod is 2 devices in one, a premium speaker and a home hub. In my opinion the sound quality is the best on the market. Features allow for searching for music, setting timers and making phone calls. Siri voice is very accurate and the design is quite attractive. On the flip side Siri is limited to the Apple universe(Appleverse) with no Bluetooth streaming and no aux input, I recommend Apple subscription enhance your HomePod experience. Oh yea and grab with both hands it’s rather heavy.

I got the HomePod while it was on sale and I must say that it was a great purchase. The sound quality of this speaker is excellent, has crystal clear vocals and nice overall bass. It also has Siri built in and works with other Apple products, it can be used with or without Apple Music.

I got this on Feb 9th. One of the best compact speaker i ever had. The bass is so beautiful, every crisp sound is noticed in this Home pod. Siri is "OK" but not great it cannot do like what iphone siri can do with 3rd party apps. But the only thing it lacks compared to other devices like Amazon, google is it only works with apple devices and very few other devices that support home kit feature. No bluetooth feature. Remember if you want best sound from this device that covers your entire room/hall, home pod should be placed in corner of the room. Overall the Audio quality is great. Of course money comes to play, you can buy echo, google home ranging 50 $ -150$..but you need to spend 350 $ on Home pod which is more than twice or thrice.
I would say if you use apple phone/ipad/apple tv then go for home pod. Or else go for other ones.
One more thing Home pod will play songs only from your apple library with apple music subscription .Even though you have songs downloaded from your personal PC to iphone via itunes library. Home pod cannot recognize those songs automatically, which is weird. For me i feel like apple is stressing to shop/purchase more apple products to use its own things. That is a strategy but down the road it will be frustrating to apple users who are switching to samsung devices etc.
Eg: if you have apple watch, apple home pod, iphone and you think of switching your iphone to samsung/LG. you neither can use apple watch or home pod. All are useless, it will strictly bind your mind to use apple phones. That is bad.

Very very nice. Very compact and looks great. Delivers 360 sound unlike Sonos and Google Max which are the only speakers that can come close to the sound quality. It picks up Hey Siri very well. I am 100% entrenched in the Apple ecosystem so I have Apple Music, etc... I do wish you could adjust the sound settings. The bass can be a little heavy at times. Overall very nice speaker.

Setup was easy, Siri can somehow always hear me so I never have to shout, the controls are all easy, it syncs up with my other Apple devices really really well, and it sounds way better than it has the right to. It’s super bass-ey without drowning out any of the mids or highs.

First and foremost, I love the sound that comes from my HomePod. I also have an Echo 1, an Echo 2, an Echo Show, an Echo Dot and two Sonos Play:1 speakers. The HomePod sounds much better than any of the Echo Devices. The HomePod has very solid bass and very clear highs. Midrange is a little lacking though. The Echos sound flat and a little muddy in comparison. Compared to the Play:1, The HomePod has slightly stronger bass and slightly clearer highs. Where the Play:1 has an advantage is midrange. The sound from the Sonos is a little fuller overall but also a slightly muddier.
The thing I like most about the Echo devices is their ability to play so many stations with voice commands. iHeartRadio and Radio.com are 2 of my favorite providers. I can play them on the HomePod but only thru my iPhone or iPad. I cannot ask for them with my voice. If I could, I would use the HomePod much more often. I can only use Apple Music with the HomePod using my voice. This is great if I know exactly the song and artist I'm looking for. However, the Apple Music playlists are not as good as the stations on iHeartRadio and I can't ask for local sports radio. I can only get ESPN radio using Siri.
So far, my Play:1 speakers only work thru the Sonos app for me. I should be able to send music to them with an Echo but there is some sort of conflict on my network preventing them from working properly. If I can get this straightened out, I will stream more often to them.
Overall I would recommend the HomePod to people that use the Apple ecosystem. Especially if you love Apple Music. Right now, I'm setting up my own apple Music Playlists. Once I do that, I will likely use the HomePod more. If I could use my HomePod like my Echo devices, I would give it 5 stars all day. But because Siri is so lacking in smarts, I deducted a star. Others might deduct more but I do love the sound...

The HomePod is apple’s answer for the smart speaker crowd. It’s multi-speakers under one container makes impressive sound including a nice bass sound for lower registry. Top of it is touch sensitive so you can stop and stop music with a quick tap. Light up volume icons also appear to adjust sound. Works with apple Siri voice commands. Even on sale tho, this is expensive compared to most of the amazon smart speakers.

Because it's the Apple smart speaker, of course it's a little locked down, really offering only AirPlay 2 and Apple Music as options to get your tunes. (Though a software update still due in 2020 supposedly adds support for other services, it's not here yet.)
What I love about the HomePod, though, is its deep bass in its small size, especially if you create a stereo pair. I've done some in-store and at-home listening, and a pair of HomePods definitely gives a single Sonos Five a run for its money in raw sound quality.
I've also had very good luck using a HomePod pair instead of a soundbar with an Apple TV, and supposedly the same update that adds support for other music services will allow you to pair an Apple TV 4K with a pair of HomePods for Atmos support. (We'll see how good it actually is, but even if it's not perfect, the price is better than shelling out for another wireless speaker system.)
In short, you get more out of a HomePod if you're deep in the Apple ecosystem, but everything I've heard played on one sounds great.

I wanted to absolutely love this speaker. I am in love with the sound. The bass is good and it is extremely loud. However, the lack of Spotify support is what really drags this speaker down for me. You are able to play Spotify over AirPlay but I would really love to use voice controls to play my playlists. If Apple incorporates Spotify support this would be the best smart speaker on the market.
If you have Apple Music I would 100% advise you to get this speaker.

Great product. Wonderful sound. Clarity with all types of music and enough bass to give those who love heavy bass driven music satisfaction. Siri is responsive. Only downside is that its chorded and remains stationary but that's not enough to rate it any lower. Apple outdid themselves with this device. Impressed and I'm not even an apple fan.

I bought the HomePod based upon two criteria: audio fidelity and integration into the Apple ecosystem. The HomePod performs flawlessly in both categories. First, the HomePod integrates easily into the Apple ecosystem. It “plays nice” with two iPhones, an iPad, two Apple TV units, and Apple Music. Setup was a breeze; it was mostly “automatic” in that regard. I had read where others had some difficulty and the setup felt “cumbersome.” I did not share that experience.
The HomePod works really well with Apple Music by itself, and with Apple Play on the iPhone, it will play other streaming services and will also play what’s in your music library. Note that this isn’t through Bluetooth, but through WiFi.
I use both Siri and Alexa smart services (I also have an Amazon Echo). I find that both services work equally well for me. Admittedly, I don’t have a “smart home,” and my experience with such services is limited. But Siri gives the weather, sets alarms, plays the news, answers questions, etc. as well as Alexa, in my experience.
Second, the sound from this little pod is freakin’ AWESOME! I’m a professional, classically-trained musician and audiophile. While not stereo, the sound stage seems deep and spacious. The bass response is fantastic without being muddy or overpowering. The kids are clear and concise. The highs are crisp without being crackly. Overall, a very well-balanced sound. I can only imagine setting two of these up as a stereo pair.
My ‘Pod sits in my office, which is about 12’ x 14’ and it fills the room quite easily with music that is linear, smooth, warm and extremely clean — even at high volume. Since the HomePod “hears” the room and its onboard computer automatically adjusts the sound output accordingly for optimal blend and balance, The music is always well-placed and appropriate for the listening space.
My musical tastes are quite eclectic, and the HomePod handles most styles with alacrity and capability. The orchestra sounds like you’re in the concert hall. Choirs are transparent and clear. Jazz is smooth and clear, but warm. Ambient and spa music that includes lots of nature sounds are faithfully reproduced. It will even handle the thump and drive of dance and chill tracks. The ‘Pod is surprisingly objective in its color; it doesn’t “favor” one style over another. That said, every speaker system has its inherent “sweet spot.” This one seems to favor ambient/jazz/fusion. The response seems fairly flat to my ear, without a particular EQ tweak in any direction. Since the iPhone has selectable EQ patterns, the ‘Pod will reflect those choices faithfully.
The quality of build seems typical of Apple products: robust, refined, sleek, unobtrusive. Fit and finish are flawless. The controls are touchpad type, and they work well. However, the ‘Pod shines when it comes to voice recognition and vocal commands. It has, I believe, 7 microphones, and those ‘phones will hear you — even over loud music — and you don’t have to yell!
I got the Space Grey. I can’t imagine the white staying clean. The power cord is fabric-wrapped and of an appropriate length to reach to an outlet without stretching and without coiling up on itself. My ‘Pod is situated about 3 feet from an outlet, on a small table, and the power cord drapes very naturally.
Overall, the HomePod is sleek, unobtrusive, and sonically refined. A very capable piece of sound equipment that not only does not disappoint, but will delight the listener.
I’m thoroughly impressed with the HomePod.

This is my second HomePod purchase and I cannot say enough good things about the speaker (especially what's to come). First, the sound quality is fantastic (better than other speakers I've heard from Sonos to Google). Because it is limited to Siri (which is much more scaled back than other voice assistants), it does have some limitations in regards to it being a voice assistant...but, this is a speaker first and assistant way down the list. Where it shines is the ease of using the speaker with Apple Music (though other native service integrations like Spotify are coming soon). I love handing off audio from my iPhone and combining my two speakers into a "matched pair" so they can act as left and right channels when I really want to blast my music and have it sound the best. I cannot recommend the HomePod enough, especially at on-sale prices!

Love it. These things look great in just about any setting/room. The sound quality is top notch, especially if you pair with a second unit. Ease of setting these up is amazing and if you use Apple Home to control smart devices in your home the HomePod is definitely the way to go! Compared to Google Assistant and Alexa it is limited when it comes to the breadth of available knowledge/answers you can get from it from a smart assistant perspective, and as always with Apple products the price is...steep. If you can catch them on sale at Best Buy I highly recommend.

I got one for my birthday after reading up on it the night before. I read an assortment of reviews and I do have several other apple devices so I felt like it would be something I could use within the eco-system. I'm also a pretty big audiophile. I have a home theater set up for the living room, for the office for the computer and a sound-bar in the gym. so I felt like not might have been overkill. especially considering I rarely use Siri and I don't have any Alexa devices. but I was pretty taken with then idea. and the sound quality is very good. clear, the bass is powerful but not overwhelming or like overdone. and I ended up using Siri to do things a lot more than before. Siri also can hear while music is playing and from a pretty far off distance. I also ended up getting a second one to create a stereo pair. which I would very highly recommend to anyone. I am a very big fan of this speaker and I think it is the best option for a smart speaker or even just a speaker in general.
