I used the one I had to trade in towards the new ipad mini. Frankly, the differences between the two ipads are not very vast: the ipad mini 3 has an extra storage size option that the retina display didn't and of course it has the fingerprint reader. That being said I love my new ipad and I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to decide between the second generation and the third. Go for the third generation.
