No, they are not equal to a laptop for ease of use (typing, power, etc) but they are more portable and suffice most peoples needs. The iPad mini 4 is a bargain right now before they stop selling them (Apple that is).

She use to have an Android tablet before which is 3 years old. She is very happy with super resolution on the screen and voice clarity when we do video calls. I got it for $299. Its Worth It.
