I had misplaced the one I had (it is very small) and it works great. There should be a connector with a second port to attach a power source that is available either with the phone or at least separately. (I have one I purchased and can plug in my headphones as well as keep my device charged)

It turns out that soon these little cables will be left all over the place. This is probably due to a change in the connector.

If you need a headphone adaptor just take the hit and buy the Apple-branded one here. Yes it's expensive, but yes it works.

I’ve got lots of extra earbuds, but I couldn’t use them. The dongle that came with the phone has a USB plug on the other end, which is no help at all. So I was glad to find a work-around so I can use my earbuds with my iPhone while I’m working.

My new iPhone needs this adapter for wired use. Works Great! Also important to note: BestBuy Service was Excellent. Greeted at the door, my inquiry on product location brought a smile from the sales person and the item placed into my hand. A quick checkout and I was Done.
