This Mac is my 3rd apple computer and it is a powerhouse. I think of myself as a song writer. I couldn't do what I love if not for the link btw apple and pro tools. Now I have more capacity to everything and it's physically huge. My studio looks space age, in my back room. Now we write a hit!

    Corporate Punishment Through Password Recovery

Right, let me tell you why Apple's password recovery system is perhaps the most perfectly engineered example of corporate sadism masquerading as security theatre I've encountered in my forty-odd years of studying human behaviour. Here's the delicious irony: Apple sells you a $2,800 MacBook Pro with a fingerprint reader that works flawlessly 99.7% of the time. Brilliant! Your fingerprint becomes your password. You use it dozens of times a day. Touch, click, done. It's so seamless, so effortless, that your actual password—that Byzantine string of uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters you created three months ago—has completely evaporated from your memory. And why shouldn't it? That's what the bloody fingerprint reader is for! But then, every three months or so, when you restart your computer (usually because of some critical update Apple insists you install immediately), it demands the actual password. Not your fingerprint. The password. The one you haven't typed since... when exactly? Now, here's where it gets properly Kafkaesque. When you inevitably fail to remember this password—because human memory doesn't work like a Swiss bank vault—Apple doesn't verify your identity through any of the dozen obvious methods available to them. They don't: Use the fingerprint reader that's been successfully authenticating you 50 times a day Make you download an authentication app to verify it's really you Send a verification code to your registered email or phone Ask security questions you might actually remember Use any form of two-factor authentication they already have set up Implement literally any other identity verification method used by banks, governments, or competent organizations No, no, no. Instead, they make you wait. A week. Seven days. 168 hours of being locked out of your own $2,800 device. This isn't security—it's punishment. It's the digital equivalent of making someone stand in the corner wearing a dunce cap. "You forgot your password? Well, that'll teach you!" The economic insanity of this is breathtaking. If you're a freelancer billing $500 a day, Apple has just cost you $3,500 in lost income to protect a device worth $2,800. It's like burning down your house to kill a spider. What's particularly galling is that NIST—the people who actually write security standards—explicitly recommend against this sort of nonsense. They suggest memorable passphrases, biometric authentication, and multiple recovery methods. You know, sensible things that acknowledge humans are humans, not computers. But Apple knows better, apparently. They've created a system that trains you to rely completely on biometric authentication, then yanks it away at the precise moment you need it most, replacing it with a memory test you're guaranteed to fail. It's security theatre at its most absurd—a system that makes everyone less secure (how many people write down their passwords because of this?) while maximizing user suffering. The week-long wait isn't about verifying identity; it's about teaching you a lesson. It's the technological equivalent of Victorian child-rearing: "This hurts me more than it hurts you." Except it doesn't hurt Apple at all. It hurts you. For a week. The truly maddening part? They could fix this tomorrow. They have your fingerprint, your devices, your purchase history, your location data, your everything. They could implement a proper identity verification system that's both more secure AND more humane. But they won't. Because somewhere in Cupertino, someone decided that making users suffer for forgetting a password they were systematically trained to forget is a feature, not a bug. It's genius, really. Evil genius, but genius nonetheless.
