If you have a new iPad, go with the 2nd gen pencil

No. It is not going to ruin your life to have to get out a lighting-usb cable and charge a pencil. But if you're going to buy a new Apple Pencil, might as well get the newer model. Just make sure you don't lose it -- it's not cheap!
