Excellent hardware, but lasts only 1.5 years

The first pencil 2 I bought, now 1 year and a half old just failed. Apple customer service indicated that it was out of warranty and that the best they could do is to give me an appointment at the Apple store so that the techs could look at it. They also offered a replacement pencil for $122!!?? The pencil is fantastic, but if complete hardware failure at one year and a half only is unacceptable for such a piece of gear. And then for Apple to refuse to stand by their product makes me questions all my Apple purchases. If you are considering an Apple Pencil 2, you should buy the extra warranty from Best Buy or Apple care, or look elsewhere for another digital pencil solution. I loved this pencil, so needless to say that I am really disappointed with this outcome.
