Can't use volume on apple 3.5mm ear buds

Don't know if this is an Apple issue or USB-C to 3.5mm adapter issue, but the volume control on the right earbud wire doesn't work (tested 3 different ear buds) with this USB-C to 3.5mm adapter.

Other than Apple?

Might have to be an Apple phone to work well. So, returned it and bought the google one for my htc and that works a lot better.
