Great product but why do you need it?

It does what is says it would do, adapt a USB-C to traditional USB adapter. I bought for adding a pen drive to the iPad. I cannot fathom why Apple would need to change the adapter connection type other than a simply money grab. Again, the product works but man can't you companies settle on one standard?
