    Arlo lost it’s way

Unforunately Arlo lost its way over the last 3 or 4 years. This camera is “ok” but Netgear killed Arlo with poor software integration (the iPhone app update was terrible) and extremely pricey cameras that weren’t worth the price difference. We switched to Blink which is about half price and the app and capabilities are equal or better. We used Arlo from 2017 to 2023 so this is a long term user review for this camera and the system overall.

I just finished the 30 day free trial and I'm throwing this thing out! I bought this as a security camera to monitor my front door and walkway. It will record the first 10-20 seconds of motion and then stop recording. There are times, like with a break-in, where I would want the entire activity recorded and this device can't do that. You also are not able to scrub back the days events, only the recorded parts. So, if motion is recorded for 10 seconds but really the person arrived before that, you are not able to ever see the lead up to the recorded motion. Additionally, the app notifies me of motion up to 4 hours after the event. The app is slow to open and even slower to load recorded videos and rarely loads a live feed. I have spoken with Arlo support about being unable to capture full events and they "are sorry to inform not have the option to access the recordings."

      Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your review. Your Arlo Essential 2 Outdoor Camera will record as soon as detects motion and will record until activity stops, up to 5 minutes. If you set the camera to record until activity stops, the camera will record as long as it detects audio or motion (up to 5 minutes). If the event exceeds 5 minutes, a new recording will start.

The app will notify you as soon as motion is detected, if you are experiencing delays, please read the following article for details on troubleshooting long delays: https://kb.arlo.com/000062742.

New model is not an improvement

The older Arlo cameras had the ability to easily swap out the battery. These newer models have the batteries permanently built in. This means that if the cameras battery is low you have to dismount the camera and hook the entire camera up to a charger to recharge the battery. With the older model you could keep spare batteries charged up and just swap them out now you have to dismount the camera for a day or two when you need to charge the battery. What were they thinking? These are outdoor cameras and often need to be mounted where there is no readily available electric power and the solar panels often let the battery slowly drain down and don't keep the camera reliably charged.

I have Arlo Pro cameras for 10 years, still work great. Now the want $20 a month with new cameras. What a horrible company, corporate greed at its best. It they thought there subscripton service was so great they would continue the 7 day free local storage with an option to subscribe. Nope complete greed. Horrible company, there are better options.

I am a senior with a neighbor problem & had to get the camera I could afford. The charge only lasts about 7 days & it takes a good 12 hours to charge. Difficult to mount unless you're right on top of it. The screw connecting the unit to the mounting foot is too short, so the wind will reverse it, since it's top heavy. I had to put a gasket in between to secure it in the upright position. Does NOT catch all movement & ID'd a cat as a person.

Failed after 14 months. Motion now constantly triggers every minute until camera battery dies (even if i face the camera face-down on a table). Because camera is out of warranty, Arlo only suggested I buy a new one. I have pro cameras that are over 5 years old, that still work great. This issue also coincidentally started to happen when they changed/"updated" their subscription service. Pretty disappointed in this product. But I guess you get what you pay for.

The Arlo 1 Esential camera is an indoor and outdoor capable wireless HD security camera. The set up on this camera is very stratighforward, charge, download the app and follow the instructions. If you have an existing Arlo hub, then you should already have the app set up on your phone. The quality of the video on this camera is very good. The recordings are clear and like many other cameras on the market, there are a number of settings that you can adjust to make the camera work for your particular situation. My version of the camera is an HD version, however, there are options for a 2K version of the camera as well. The camera has a 130 degree field of view and has two way audio so you can communicate through the camera and app. In the box is the camera, mounting hardware and a USB cable for charging the camera, but no charging block. This camera also has an integrated spotlight and will do color nighttime video for better clarity. The one drawback to all of the new cameras, however, is if you want to have the full functionality of the camera, you will need to purchase a monthly service. My original Arlo cameras did not have this requirment and came with a base station that allowed me to have real time alerts and to review videos. Those days are gone I suppose and even with the base station, I have not been able to get any of the new Arlo cameras to send alerts without a subscription. Just be aware. The camera battery lasts a long time and the picture quality is very good, even on the HD version. If you plan to add on cameras, just pick one brand and build on it so that you only have one monthly fee.

The second generation Arlo Essential Outdoor Camera is a hit, as a really nice, high quality camera at a relatively low cost is hard to beat. Installation is simple, particularly if you already have the Arlo app o. If n your phone. If you’re using an older version of the app, you will need to update to the latest version before adding this camera. I added this to my Arlo home security system. It was just a matter of hitting the “+” sign on the app and pressing a button on the camera, the app took care of everything except naming the camera. Physical installation is also easy. The Essential Outdoor Camera comes with a single mount in two pieces, one that goes on the camera and one that connects to the mounting location. You attach this to your desired mounting location with the included screws, use the bolt in the mount to connect to the camera, and slide the two pieces together. One thing to be aware of: the design of this mount requires you to do a bit more planning than with other Arlo cameras. The mount does not move side to side or up and down, so you will need to position the camera exactly where you want it. There is no tweaking as there is with the magnetic mounts. The camera itself is shallower, but also taller, than other Arlo cameras. Still, it’s a sleek design that fits easily into any environments. As with other Arlo cameras, this is completely wireless. While this makes installation a breeze and eliminates unsightly wires, it also means you need to keep an eye on the battery level so that it does not run down. This is easy to do, as the app will show you the current level and alert you once you get below a pre-set threshold. Images from the camera are extremely clear, and with its 130-degree field of view, it covers a wide area. You can set alerts based on specific areas in the field of view, allowing you to receive automated motion alerts. Night vision (selectable between color or black and white) is extremely clear, and the built-in spotlight allows you to light up the area to get a better view. This camera is another hit product from Arlo.

I have had arlo cameras for years and when I had a chance to get an updated version I jumped at the opportunity. Once received and proceeded to set up is where the camera had issues. Now having several Arlo cameras currently, set up is usually a breeze. This new one refused to connect to the wifi. I reset the camera, reset the router etc. and still nothing. Called support and they were unable to troubleshoot it either. About a day later I received an email from tech support and they offered to help. It took another day and a half, but they were finally able to run me through additional steps to get it to work. As far as the camera's performance it is on par with the other Arlo cameras I have. Picture is clear and the built in spotlight does a good job illuminating the immediate area. It also has solid color night vision. The camera easily interacts with the Arlo app. You can set up specific alert areas so the camera will trigger when a person, animal, vehicle etc. Crosses into this particular area. Camera can also detect when packages are left on your doorstep. Its definately a smart camera. The best part of the entire system is every camera is wireless. I would still recommend this product.

Be very aware when you buy a Arlo camera, they assured you don't have to buy a subscription, but after owning it for a month all the features are gone on the camera and you have to buy the subscription to get the features back, by then the window to return the Arlo is closed. Very dissapointed customer
