It comes with 3 months free to view the cameras. Then you have to enter a contract. The cameras say the battery will last 6 months. They last 2 days if lucky. And to charge you have to remove the camera. When it does have a charge it works great. Picture and sound is clear.

This arlo camera does not allow to record unless you pay for subscription. Had to override the sensor to use the other camera to have recording of motion detection. You can only view present time and cannot record unless monthly subscribtion.

The speaker system and alarm needs to be lower and a mounting unit that allows you to move it around in all directions would be great.

The Arlo Essential spotlight camera is a entry level camera from Arlo that incorporates good battery life, video quality, night vision, and a spotlight. Overall, for the price the Arlo Essential is a good value, especially if you can mount it in an area that is easily accessible for recharging. As an existing Arlo Pro camera owner, I will say that this is definitely a lower cost device. It’s not meant as much of a criticism, but you lose some important things. For instance, magnetic mounting for easy access, and removable batteries. Furthermore, the essential housing is much larger than even my first generation Arlo pros. All that said, if you can live with the compromises, there is a solid camera here. First of all, while having a louder mechanism for switching modes, I found the camera reliable to switch to night vision. The LEDs used for night vision are more compact and less noticeable, yet seem to do a great job illuminating. The integrated speaker for talking back is decently loud. Even the LED spotlight is brighter than I expected. The downsides come in mounting. Unlike the Arlo pros that use magnets, this camera mounts more traditionally. The mounting hardware isn’t as secure as I would like it, but it does keep the camera stable. 3 screws mount the base instead of the keyhole mounting found in the Pros. This isn’t a bad thing, just an observation. It does mean that charging it is less forgiving, and while it’s possible to disconnect the arm, you’re better off just charing it in place if you can. I’m still not a huge fan of Arlo’s mode system for programming, but once you figure it out, it’s not hard. The smartphone connectivity is solid, and I like the way they implemented sharing with friends and family, allowing you to very detailly set access per camera. Overall, I like the Arlo Essential, and am using it to monitor a back door. So far it’s been reliable, and connects quickly. I appreciate that this budget option exists, and can work without the base station (or with in my case). Arlo camera are pretty great in my opinion, and are a better alternative than some more popular brand options out there. Recommended!
