The Arlo Essential is larger than my first generation Arlo Pro. I get it that it has a larger battery and supports 1080 resolution, but I prefer a compact camera. I still use my Arlo Pro to view my pet while I am away. I like that Arlo saves a weeks worth of video for free.

Not worth the money, even with a subscription

Owned for 3 months when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.We purchased two of these, one of which has given us almost non-stop trouble with its battery depleting within 3 months the first time, then within 2 months the second time. We switched them to solar panels, and now it's almost a weekly, if not daily, issue of being told the camera battery is too low to allow the camera to function at all. Both cameras have issues connecting to the livestream sometimes, which makes the notifications pretty useless by the time you get one and can connect to the livestream. All of these issues happened during the trial period for the Arlo Secure, which allowed us to set Active Zones and eliminate extra recordings and non-stop notifications, but without a subscription, these issues would seem to be amplified. You'd be better off spending more on a better product. (And if anyone is curious, Arlo Support was of little to no help on these issues when I contacted them about it.)

The Essential was a little cheaper so we decided to try it. The only thing that I don’t like is that it does not activate by noise but only by motion. I guess it’s not a big deal since we have 3 other cameras around the house that does activate by noise/motion.
