    Simple system for basic security

Overall, this is a decent system. I would not consider it the best, nor the ideal set up for those who are looking for an true surveillance system. I would recommend this system to users who want a simple, easy to setup security system that will provide basic protection and coverage. This is likely closer to 3.5stars, but again, this will be a relatively good system for basic users. I only recommend this product if you are looking for a wireless system and have absolutely zero desire for a wired system. At this price point for 2 cameras, you can get much better WIRED systems with many more cameras. Setup: I decided to first set up the system before installing the cameras. This allowed me to see the best mounting locations and make real-time adjustments. I highly recommend doing this format of setup (which is also stated in the manual). It took about 30-40minutes to get it all setup including on my device. I spent a couple more hours mounting the 2 cameras (however, length of camera install is highly subjective). It is very important to keep in mind these units need to be recharged, so your mounting location should be easily accessible. I would recommend connecting these to a continuous power supply. There is an optional (additional cost) solar panel accessory, or you can connect to a regular power outlet with aftermarket charger. When choosing a location, its best that you do not mount too high that you cannot see faces, cars, objects easily, but not too low such that the cameras cam be damaged, broken, or stolen. Placing under eaves offers extra weather protection, but may effect lighting which can effect image quality. Connection: It is very important to set the base in a central location to the cameras, not the home. I did not run into to connectivity issues within 200ft. My internet speed in 100mb/s, did not have any App connection problems. You must have an available Ethernet port to use this device. A big plus is the ability to connect an external hard drive to the device for local backup of recorded material. Image Quality: Generally good. You are at the mercy of lighting throughout the day and the amount of direct light on the camera. Shadows can really washout the image quality. You should aim for locations that are very well lit throughout the day and night. The quality truly ranges from poor to excellent. For face recognition the camera has to be mounted below 8ft and within 10-15ft of the path, in my setup. I made sure the cameras received a lot of light at night and were not covered in shadow most of the day. I was able to regularly identify the delivery guys and anyone walking towards the front door. For garage area coverage I could easily identify make and model but colors were hit and miss (ex. black vs blue vs grey) at times. License plate detection was very difficult unless the camera was pointed downward right up to the garage door. ID could only be done with a lot on non-reflective light with a car very close to the garage door (and with a front plate). For the backyard could can easily keep an eye on the dog and their antics. All in all the image quality allows me to keep an eye on the house and surrounding and provides an extra layer of protection. It also provides a useful deterrent to criminal activity. Night Vision: Unless there is a lot of light shining on your coverage area, the night vision image quality is bad. In general, night vision quality is never that great unless you are on a high-end system, that will still employ good lighting for better image quality. I will say this night vision is worse than some others I've seen. Additional features: The siren is nice to have in case you need to scare aware a potential criminal or the nuisance of neighborhood vandals. It is definitely loud, but probably not as loud as a security system outdoor siren. I really enjoy the two way communication feature to ward away solicitors and give the impression of being home when you are not. However, a doorbell camera system would still be better since you are relying on motion detection for this feature. Motion detection was hit or miss. It definitely picks up stray movement that is completely useless. Not a big fan. Email alerts and push notifications came thru in real time, but definitely get annoying. Summary: This is best if you want to keep an eye on an apartment/condo/vacation home with no frills and simple setup. For basic surveillance, it will do what you need. It's not nearly best option for security cameras since wired is still far superior in every aspect. However, those would are looking for a simple setup, wireless connection, and general security/viewing of the home this system is a good option. I would also consider getting a 4 camera system to improve the coverage and implement a close up and distance view setup. Arlo is one of the first in this game and they are probably doing it the most right in the wireless game so far.

I got this Camera System as an upgrade to the Arlo-pro system I already have. These newer version cameras have a clearer picture and seem like a wider view angle (although specs say the same) I like the old system and this new system a lot for the motion sensor and the wireless ability. I have been very happy with the older Arlo Pro for about a year and so far the new system works great too. My one complaint of both is the motion sensor goes off frequently from the motion of my flag outside (I have tried to adjust the position but wouldn't work right). The newer camera seems to be set off frequently from squirrels outside (which the older one did not). As with the previous Arlo Pro, the setup is very easy. I only had one issue with one of the new cameras not loading up, but I plugged it in for a couple minutes and tried again and had no problem. They should be charged and ready to setup out of the box. The base and cameras typically require a firmware upgrade immediately (it was the same with my old system). I elected to use the new base station and sync my old cameras in with it (rather than use the new cameras on my already setup old system). You plug in the base to your router and power and allow it to sync up to your WiFi (takes about 2 minutes). I already had the app and account installed so I didn't need to do that again. But this would be the next step otherwise. You can download the app on your phone or tablet, or go online and register and manage the system from there. Then you sync the cameras (one at a time) by pressing the sync button on the camera and base. Repeat for as many cameras as you have. I had to resync my old cameras too. This is when the firmware popups usually start. They take 5 minutes or so on each part because they need to be done one at a time (base-camera1-camera2) Then you are ready to setup your cameras in a location of your choice. They are rated for indoor or outdoor and work in little/no light to daylight so you have options. The mounting system is the same as the old Arlo Pro. The cameras have a built in magnet in the back and attach to the metal clip that can be screwed into any surface (wood works easiest). Once the clip is installed you can attache the camera to it and swivel it around to get the view you like (you can watch it on your phone as you do it so you know what it looks like) The cameras can be run full-time if you wire them in, but I got these for the wireless function. They are rechargeable and I haven't run the battery out yet, but I have had to charge my old cameras 3 times each since last December (11 months). So the battery is very good. There is an indicator or the app so you can tell when they are getting low (I charge mine at around 30% or so). Now onto functions: I have 4 cameras set on mine, but you can use more if you choose. (I think 6 or 8 on one system) The app is setup differently on my iPad compared to phone. Basically you have a device tab that shows your camera view (you can play them live or they show the last recorded image by default), there is a Mode tab which allows you to arm or disarm your motion sensor and use things like a geofence (for turning on/off the motion when your device enters the fence area), and there's a library tab to view all recorded files. These stay on for 7 days or you delete them. Under the device tab you can play/record video from any camera, listen in (audio recorded automatically) and speak through the camera (not very loud, it's tough to hear and there is a time delay), and turn on the siren from the base (very loud and annoying) There are little images to provide info (ear-if sound is being recorded, runner-if motion is sensed, wifi-if receiving signal, battery-to show charge level, USB-to show if plugged in, clock-to set CVR timer, # of new videos recorded, gear-settings to turn on/off camera etc.) (CVR is for continuous recording and needs to be plugged in to use.) The old camera system would record 10 sec videos when motion was sensed, the new camera system records video as long as there is motion (about 6 sec is the shortest I have seen but have had 2min plus videos too) The range for the cameras seems to be around 50FT or so if going though walls. I had spotty coverage on one camera that was about 45-50 feet away through a couple walls until I got a WiFi extender. Now it's better. You can play videos, adjust settings, and control cameras from your app or online. A note, every time you log in online it will boot you off the app, and vice-versa. Overall I like the system a lot. It works very well and the wireless cameras and easy mounts make the set up and any adjustments easy to do. The only complaint I have is that the motion sensitivity is too much. If you are looking for people to set it off only you may get a lot of false warnings. If you want to catch the rodent that is eating your vegetables then it will work well.
