Great Home Camera and Security System
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Arlo - Pro 2 Security Camera System, 2-Camera Kit is a very impressive setup! I was really impressed with how quickly I was up and running. It only took about 10 minutes total to pair the cameras and get everything setup. The batteries for the wireless cameras are great and adds a ton of flexibility when it comes to placement of the cameras themselves. Usually I steer clear of systems like this because the wireless technology was just not there yet, but the Arlo exceeds my expectations. The app is user friendly and provides a lot of different options for your recordings and live feeds. I found the video to be crisp and clear. My dog has been chewing my shoes lately so it'll be nice to catch her in the act and see what exactly she does when I'm not home! I haven't really explored too much of the security side yet because I haven't needed too, but I imagine it will work great if the time ever comes. I also like the fact that you can add more cameras so seamlessly if i wanted to in the future. Overall I think this is a great home monitoring system for the money. The videos are crisp and clear and provide a multitude of different options to record review and store. The one thing I do wish is with the price you pay for these types of devices why they don't include more "cloud storage" for your videos without having to pay a monthly fee. Spending 500 dollars on a home recording system should be enough to at least record a months worth of video at a time. Other than that I absolutely love the Arlo Pro 2

Improvement from 1st Generation
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a huge leap from the 1st generation Arlo. I bought those and wasn't pleased with the battery life and picture. Arlo has stepped it up with the rechargeable batteries and an excellent video quality. The only thing I don't like is the time between pressing the "live" button until the video actually shows up. I thought Arlo would have fixed this but it almost seems like there's no improvement from the previous generations. If you hear something and want to quickly look at video to see what it was, the app is not quick enough to show the video in a timely manner. I have 300m download speed so I know that is not the problem. Nevertheless, this is a good security camera. The flexibility to place your camera literally anywhere in and outside of your home is convenient. No wires. I hope a software update comes soon to correct the lag time issue with the app.

Arlo Pro 2 - Huge improvement from Arlo Pro
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Originally bought Arlo Pro a year ago and had to return it since it was a lot of false alarms that I couldn't disable. The video quality was OK.The quality of video for Arlo Pro2 is way better, you can record 3 sec prior to event. Night vision is awesome too. And the best part I have 7 days of FREE cloud! One thing I need is a skin to protect from rain on the lens. Waiting for those to become available.

Solid hardware and a great app experience
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For me, 2017 has been mostly about smart home gadgets. This year I got my first Hue lightbulbs, robot vacuum, Amazon Alexa and Nest learning thermostat. And as much as I love true toys, it’s hard to deny the joy behind buying a gadget that satisfies my constant need to tinker, as well as enables me to convince my wife the expense is worth it; but, none of my foray into the smart home market this year has entered far into the realm of safety and security—namely, camera systems. Security systems from 10 or 15 years ago are, in comparison, so incredibly archaic to what is on the market now. I just stumbled across an indiegogo campaign for a $9 security system based on social operation instead of traditional monitoring companies. And while that is on the more extreme side of the shift, it seems as if the security market (to some extent) is headed in a new direction like Uber did a handful of years ago: the notion that we already have the infrastructure and the resources to complete the job, all we need is a new way of looking at it. The closest I came to safety and security was with the purchase of a Nest Learning Thermostat, which was possibly the most underwhelming tech purchase of my entire life. The tinkerer in me was incredibly dissatisfied at something so easy to connect and use—but upon reflection, that in some ways is the way it should be. Because, when it comes to safety and security, bugs and glitches have a much more significant impact than the blue shift on your Pixel 2 XL. Still, features are important, especially in a market where the security systems of yesterday rely heavily on a monthly monitoring service (AKA, revenue stream) that you may be able to live without. The product reviewed here is the Netgear Arlo Pro system, this one with 2 included cameras, but the system is expandable to at least 15 cameras with some extra up front and recurring costs. With 5 cameras or fewer, you can take advantage of the basic Arlo account, providing you access to a weeks’ worth of recordings at no additional monthly cost. Additional options are available—like longer storage, additional cameras, and continuous recordings—for additional fees on the Arlo website. Unboxing and set up was surprisingly fast, even considering the base station and cameras all needed firmware upgrades out of the box. Plugging these in and getting them up and running was extremely easy. The base station has an attractive matte white finish that will look good on an end table; the cameras have a glossy white finish and come with optional magnet mounts for wall/ceiling mounting. Included in the box was a battery for each camera and a single USB cable that is used for recharging the batteries; it is worth noting that although the charging can be done while the batteries are in the cameras, there is an optional charging station that can charge two batteries simultaneously. The batteries themselves will need to be charged based upon use—the more the camera is used, the sooner you will have to recharge. I have a coworker who has the same system and only needs to charge batteries once every 30-45 days; those cameras look at his front entry way within range of the street, so passing cars trigger recordings all the time. But, when and how the cameras become armed is all customizable in the app and will be different for everyone who uses it. The cameras feature night vision, two-way voice, 1080p recording and are weather tolerant for those in warmer or colder climates. I found the quality in lowly lit environments to be adequate, not tremendously impressive, but nonetheless functional if needed to be. The two way voice has a very slight delay, but the speakers and mics on the cameras themselves are very good and get the job done well. All of these things are as expected from Netgear, with quality products that are easy to set up and maintain. But where this system shines is not in the hardware, but the accompanying app that controls the whole system. The main page gets you quick access to all of the connected devices, including the live video and two-way voice capabilities. Recorded events are available in the “Library” tab, which will remain available based upon your account / subscription level. The “Mode” tab allows for customized arming based upon a schedule or your location, and can also be manually armed or disarmed as needed. The interface is simple, intuitive, and works really, really well. Also, additional people can be granted access to the same features without extra cost or sharing logins, so my wife also can have access to the same stuff as I do. In most ways that count, the system works incredibly well and is easy to use. But, it comes at a price: the two-camera system retails at $479, and although it will be on sale from time to time, this is quite a bit of money for only two cameras. The Pro 2 cameras themselves are $220 each, so it makes sense that the 3- and 4-camera systems are substantially more. Maxing out the free basic service plan capabilities (5 cameras) would be over $1000. But then again, safety is something that you typically are going to be willing to pay a little bit more for. And, Netgear is early to an emerging market that is going to pick up some more traction is 2018, as Nest and Ring have new products regularly coming to retail. That said, the advantages of Arlo Pro 2 over the earlier generation Pro cameras may be a place for you to save some cash but still get into the market—even the previous generation has received good reviews. Ultimately, though, it’s down to your wallet. If you’re looking to get into the game, sticking with a name like Netgear (or Ring, or Nest) will ensure that you have access to upgrades and support as time goes on, as well as accessories (think: solar panel). And, if you’re looking to get into the game, the competition is not a lot cheaper than what Netgear has provided, and probably doesn’t provide the same app-rich experience that Netgear does. So if you can justify the cost, I don’t think the performance will disappoint—and at the end of the day, the safety of your family is worth the extra cost.

Great wireless security system
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have tried out a couple of brands and this is by far the best that I've used. The phone interface can make or break a product and this interface is very good. The setup is easy and straight forward and the software makes this a great option for home security. Setting it up was as simple as hooking up the Ethernet cable and power cord. Once the device is online for the network, the mobile device application is used to complete the setup. Pairing the devices was fast and easy. The software offers firmware updates for the cameras and one is ready to use the cameras minutes later. At first, it was alerting for every movement in the area. This was easily changed by establishing a schedule for detecting movement and alerting, The interface shows the activities for both cameras on one screen and gives a live action option. I will be using this during the daytime to check on the dogs. There are free options for a subscription service as well as tiered purchase options. All in all, this is a very nice setup and I will use it a lot. Finally, the mounts are small and magnetic. There is an option for sticking each camera to a wall and several more cameras can be added. I haven't had a chance to evaluate the battery life yet, but the batteries and large and should hold a charge for quite some time. The battery charge status also shows up in the phone interface.

Nice piece of equipment that comes so close!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There is a lot to like about the Arlo Pro 2 system… and a few things to hate as well! If it were half the price, I would imagine there would be a slightly different opinion on it, but it isn’t. I guess I should describe my experience when I tested the system at two locations with very different results. HOME I have a Linksys Max-Stream AC5400 WiFi router at home and setup couldn’t have been any easier. Within about 10 minutes, I was all set up and looking at my first short videos. I couldn’t believe how easy the setup was, although I have come to expect that from Netgear. It is not too bright in the room I was working in at first, so I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the video. It seemed like it was clear enough, but the contrast just wasn’t what I expected and it wouldn’t take color video. I thought the room had plenty of light, but I brightened the room up and the video switched to color. Video and even color quality is not what I had expected with 1080p video. I guess I was thinking it would take better images as I had worked with other surveillance cameras of similar price and resolution but without a base station and cloud recording and they put out much better quality. Mounting is a breeze with the included “bubbles” that mount with a single screw and then the camera perches on it at a wide range of angles with strong magnets. This is a pretty simple but elegant way of mounting the cameras. WORK I took the system to work and plugged it in after reading that it should come right up since it uses dynamic IP addressing. After a couple of minutes, the base station showed three green lights and the internet light would blink once in a while showing activity so I pulled up the app to see how the video was in a brightly lit room. Nothing. Then I noticed after it tried to connect for a while that there was a message indicating that the base station was offline. A quick search revealed that this is a problem that has been around through several generations of Arlo systems. At home, I use Charter for my ISP but at work we use a service piped through AT&T lines, and thought that maybe they were messing with the traffic and just not letting the device talk to the internet. What frustrates me is that when I decided to reset it to factory and start over, I went into the browser site and clicked to remove it from my account. The lights on the base station went all yellow and it started to reboot! I thought maybe it was a coincidence. After it booted, I held the reset button in on the back and waited again for it to boot. I went through the entire setup procedure, the browser saw the base immediately, I gave the base a new name and added the cameras back on after leaving them without their batteries until I was ready to sync each one. After getting the cameras synced, all the lights were back to green but the browser still showed it was disconnected! What was interesting is that it showed the new name, but I assumed it was just because I had set it in the browser. I fired up my Android app and it showed the same thing, correct serial number but offline. So I removed the system again, from the app… immediately, the lights on the base went yellow again and the procedure started all over. I went through the entire setup several times to see if I was missing something. Obviously, the website is talking to the base, since it immediately shows the correct serial number and device info when I add the device and it resets the lights when I remove the device using the website or app, but it flat out refuses to allow it to come online from their server. After reading MANY threads on Netgear’s site, it appears to be a problem many people are dealing with and can be very frustrating since the hardware appears to be working fine. I tested it by adding a USB flash drive and had dozens of videos in a very short time, so it is recording, just not talking to the Netgear Cloud Server. CONCLUSION I have found this system to be both idiot proof at home and frustratingly time consuming on my work network! I cannot believe this is the same system in each scenario. If I wasn’t the IT guy at work, I would have really suspected the network was to blame, but the network is allowing Netgear to talk to the base but for some reason, it is just not working. I wish I had more time to play with it and the hours needed to help Netgear troubleshoot yet another customer problem, but I had intended it for home security and am very happy with how it works there. For now, it is going back up at home where it should do the job I intended it to do from the start. A COUPLE OF NOTES There needs to be a way to connect to the device from the network without needing to go through the cloud server. There should be a simple web access page to do at least basic maintenance and video review. Popping a USB drive in and out just to view videos is ridiculous! The CONSTANT stream of notifications EVERY time someone walks past a camera is very annoying and I am going to be tweaking it to minimize that. Video quality needs to improve, even the resolution does not seem to be up to 1080p quality, especially in color mode. I’m going to play with placement a bit to see if I can maximize the light and see if I can help it out. FINAL THOUGHTS This is an excellent system if it works with your internet connection… and you will know within just a few minutes of opening the box! Netgear has done a great job of making a simple setup procedure. I am willing to work with it for the quality issues at home, but if it was supposed to be used at my work, I would have boxed it up and taken it back almost immediately!
