I am one of those people who looks at what the packaging of a product says about the contents. In this case, the packaging is excellent but not wasteful. The two camera's can clearly be seen, and the ancillary items are well packed and organized. When I opened the package and inventoried the contents I was surprised to find only a "quick start" guide rather than a full instruction manual. I needn't have worried. Following the simple steps in order made installation a snap and everything worked as it should the first time. No need to wonder about "what did I do wrong?" Very smooth and efficient. The cameras attach magnetically to an ingenious semi-spherical wall mount that allows for infinite positioning of the cameras. I suggests opening the app on your phone or table as you plan your locations so you can get a preview of what you'll see when mounted. Also, if you use the provided wallboard anchors use a 3/16 bit, not 1/4. Take my word for it. Software is generally very clear, but there is some ambiguity in the "Mode" option. I could not figure out how to turn off the motion "alerts" that came to my phone and computer every time someone "tripped" the camera. I tried Netgear's on-line chat and the problem was resolved within about 3 minutes and they helpfully sent me an immediate copy of the conversation for future reference. I have not tried the night vision function adequately to comment on its effectiveness, but will update this review later when I do. Overall, an excellent product with apparently good support. Next update to software should make it even better.

The Netgear Arlo is Netgear's entry in what is quickly becoming a crowded market for DIY cloud-connected home security. I have to say, that with the initial setup and use, it does not disappoint. Packaging: Honestly, this is one of my few gripes. The packaging is annoying to get in to, the cameras are literally screwed into the packaging using some very narrow thumb screws. It took a minute to figure out how to remove the plastic box from the packaging itself, then remove the tray the cameras are on, then try to unscrew the thumb screws. If you have large fingers as I do, you may have some difficulties with this as the screws are very thin and hard to grip. I understand Netgear wanting to show off their product, but this was a bit on the overkill side of things. Connectivity and Initial Setup: The setup is actually quite easy and very literally 'plug and play', though that's a negative as well... The base station REQUIRES a wired connection. In this world of WiFi, I find it hard to believe they could not put a wireless radio in the station to allow for it to be placed in more locations. I understand that the cameras can be, but being that the base station is where the siren is, if you have your router in a closet/basement/etc and have to put the base station there too, who will hear the siren? Obviously we all know that routers should be centrally located in a house to provide optimal WiFi reception, but in all honesty, I can't recall a single time where anyone I know has actually been able to do that. The camera batteries come with a full charge so there is no need to wait on them to charge for initial setup and use. In addition, the charger uses a micro usb cable of good length so there shouldn't be any difficulties locating this in a useful place. Once done connecting the base station and waiting for the somewhat lengthy boot up, it then becomes a simple task of installing the app on your phone and progressing through the inital set up phase (syncing cameras, etc). All is very straightforward and I was done in a matter of minutes, with the longest portion being the actual account creation with Netgear. The app allows for logging in with fingerprint if your device supports it, so that was nice to see. They give you the option of using the free standard 7-day 5-camera monitoring and cloud storage on initial setup, there are also 2 options for more devices and more length of time. I think in most cases the basic (free) plan is plenty for most home users. Usage: Immediately upon setup I was bombarded with notifications for motion sensing, so I had to go back that setting down in the app, again a fairly simple process. The video quality is phenomenal in daylight, I was very impressed, and while on the same network or on 4G LTE the framerate of the video is excellent. The view angle is good, allowing me to see a very large portion of a 20 ft wide family room from a centrally located fireplace mantle. Audio comes through well and I had no difficulties hearing what my family was doing in the room I had it set up in. Dark performance was on par with most night-vision capable cameras, which is to say it worked well, but I wasn't blown away. The siren is extremely loud. I understand that this should go without saying, however in using other similar systems, one of the more common complaints is that the siren is too quiet. I can honestly say in this instance that is not the case. Bottom Line: With the market for connected home security already becoming quickly saturated, the Netgear Arlo stands out in that the cameras are completely wire-free. The motion sensitivity is good though it does not appear to 'learn', but there are adjustments for that sensitivity. I do think, however, that with the capability of adding more cameras to the unit, this may be one of the easiest ways for multi-point visual and motion security for many people, especially since you can really place the cameras anywhere.

    Great wireless system

I have no idea why there are so many 1 stars, I have not had a problem with mine at all, set up was easy and simple, cameras have a amazing picture, yes night vision not as good as day vision but placed around outside light, motion lighting ect sure helps. I do wish for the price they would have given solid mounts for all cameras Instead of the one. the 130' view is huge I had to move the one out front 3 times so I don't pick up passing traffic. The geofencing option is GREAT, set this and your system knows when you leave and automatically arms itself and vise versa when you come home. I hope the batteries last and so far so good. I have never lost picture on any of my cameras unless my internet goes out and in that case is NOT the cameras or systems fault, I did add a battery back up to my system and internet and have been fine ever since.
