I have been using the Arlo system for several years to monitor the activity around my home. I have two base stations and at least 8 cameras including two Pro 3’s, the previous model of the 4. The Pro 4 includes the camera, a proprietary magnetic charging cable, magnetic mount, and battery. Unfortunately, no power adapter, and the charging cable is still USB-A, which if companies are going to stop including power adapters in boxes, they at least need to provide USB-C cables, not something that is going to be obsolete in a few years. I typically keep my cameras wall or solar powered anyway, even though the battery lasts a long time. It’s just much easier to set and forget, especially for cameras mounted at inconvenient (need a ladder) locations. Setup as always is super simple with the Arlo app. If this is your first camera, there’s going to be a registration piece and asking you to setup a trial of Arlo Smart subscription. Since I already use all these features and have a paid account it was as simple as scrolling down to the bottom of my list of cameras and selecting to add a new device. After it’s added, it takes about 5 minutes to update the firmware. New to the Pro 4 is the ability to install it using your home WiFi instead of needing to require an Arlo base unit. This is good and bad. It’s great if you only need one camera and have excellent WiFi strength and do not require any of the features that you get with a base station, namely local streaming and recording of the original 2K quality image. If your WiFi is mediocre or you need more than 2 cameras you probably want the base station which is typically found in a package of 2-3 cameras anyway. A base station handles the wireless video from the cameras and can be plugged directly into your router which means your Netflix streams aren’t having to compete for the same wireless bandwidth with your cameras. The spotlight is the same as the one found on the Pro 3 and really helps to illuminate night time shots. Video shot with the spotlight activated will look more natural rather than the night vision you typically see on surveillance cameras. For example it’s possible to make out the color of someone’s shirt when the LED spotlight is activated. As mentioned above, there is a subscription which will provide the maximum benefits and experience for the hardware. With the Arlo Smart plan you’ll get cloud recording with 30 days of video history, and advanced object detection including people and packages. Obviously, the plan is worth it for the cloud recording alone. I don’t know if the people/package/animal detection works 100% of the time, but it’s pretty good. I really don’t care that the system tries to classify what it is as long as it records activity for any and all motion events. Another feature the plan comes with is cloud activity zones. This is an absolute must-have if you plan on getting alerts on your phone for the camera. It allows you to set specific areas within the frame of the video that will trigger the recording and alert you. For example, if you don’t want cars on the street triggering alerts you can exclude them or anything else that generates a lot of motion activity that you don’t care about. This model also features the option record everything continuously to the cloud. However, there's a few drawbacks to this approach in that it's an additional monthly cost on top of the subscription plan, running wire-free on battery is not an option, it's going to use more of your internet bandwidth, and it does require the base station. Really only worth it if your plan IS to capture everything happening like on a busy street. For most people, there's nothing happening in their yard 95% of the time to require this. Pros: No base or smart hub needed 2560 x 1440 HDR 2K Video w/ Night Vision Up to 6 months of battery life Simple App-based Setup Built-in Spotlight Auto Tracking and Zoom Emergency Siren Cons USB-A Cable Needs subscription for full benefits Only supports 2.4Ghz WiFI Overall, the Arlo Pro 4 is basically a minor improvement of the Pro 3, the biggest feature being the flexibility to use it without spending more money on a base, which is a welcome feature for anyone who only needs a couple of cameras and has good WiFi available. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in a hassle-free video security platform and don't mind the subscriptions aspect.

The Arlo Pro 4 Spotlight Camera came well packaged and is a good-looking security camera. I am utilizing the Arlo Pro 4 with my android mobile phone and the Arlo app only. Downloading the Arlo app, to my Android mobile phone, started to become a chore however it finally decided to download even though the app stated it failed to download. Small glitch I suppose. I am very accustomed to using security cameras and security camera apps, I find the Arlo app somewhat confusing or not user friendly. I find myself constantly having to hunt through the app settings to find the adjustments I prefer. You can find the Arlo Pro 4 manual at: https://www.arlo.com/en-us/images/documents/arlopro4/Arlo_Pro4_UM.pdf Mounting the Pro 4 security camera is simple. One screw holds a small attachment, called a stopper, to the wall, once installed you simply slide the magnetic camera holder onto the stopper until you hear it click. Attaching the camera is simply placing it on the magnetic mount and adjusting the video view to your needs. There is a more secure mounting bracket available for exterior installs if needed. The magnetic mount does make camera adjustments quite easy and will be nice when it comes time to charge the battery. The battery showed a 50% charge when received and after all the testing of the camera the battery shows 48%. The wireless connectivity to our router 2.4 GHz wi-fi band is inconsistent. We have 1gig of service to our home and the Pro 4 is mounted approximately 25 feet from the area in our home where our router is located and the Arlo app randomly displays, poor, strong, good, video Bandwidth. We have cameras further from our router wi-fi source that display a constant strong signal. This random wi-fi signal will cause the Pro 4 system to buffer a fair amount at times. The removable battery is a big plus, when the day comes that the battery needs replacing you can purchase another battery rather than another camera. Good video with the Pro 4 and the HDR is great as it alleviates the issues with over-under exposure caused by light and dark areas mixed. I have other cameras that do not have the HDR and at times I experience poor video quality. Through the Arlo app I have the Pro 4 alert motion set to “People” however the camera continues to activate when our dogs, one 90 pounds and one 10 pounds, are walking within range of the Pro 4 camera. The camera will also activate occasionally to birds flying by or landing within the camera activation range. The adjustments for the above are found in the app under Smart Notifications, click on the camera you are adjusting the activity for, and make your adjustments. Under MOTION ALERTS you have the option for “People”, “Vehicles”, and “Animals” then “All Other Motion”. Not sure what “All Other Motion” refers to. There is a great feature with the Pro 4, just below the MOTION ALERTS you have AUDIO ALERTS. There you will find “Smoke/CO Alarm” but then there is the “All Other Audio” and again I am not sure what this means and could not find information regarding these settings without calling Arlo. We have other brands of security cameras and I find their apps a little more user friendly, such as the ability to select as many video as you choose and delete them all at one time. With the Arlo app I find you have to delete each video individually, if you have a fair amount of activations this process is a little time consuming. When receiving a motion alert from the Pro-4 I found the pause button blocking the action in the video to the point you may not identify the person in the video. If you press the pause button to identify the person/persons, the start play button will now be blocking the video replay view. On one video the delivery person’s face was blocked until the delivery person was walking away from the camera. I found the camera video, during live feed, would not rotate to allow for a larger video view however I finally noted expansion arrows located in the top right of the video screen, that will expand your view during live feed. The expansion arrows disappear quickly, and I never notice them for a couple days. During review of a recorded video, just turn your phone to rotate the screen and achieve a full video. If you set the camera to auto zoom and tracking, you will lose your 2K resolution however this is a very neat feature and works very well. The Pro 4 sound is excellent, truly clear, and sensitive. You can hear our electronic door lock opening and closing. Like most products you have pros and cons and some of these can change with the learning curve, the time it takes to become accustom to a product. At this time, I am not overly impressed with the Arlo Pro 4 Security Camera due to connectivity issues and this is mainly based on the Arlo app. Video and sound quality from the Pro 4 are exceptionally good.
