Do not buy Arlo cameras. What they don’t tell you is they are absolutely worthless unless you pay the $10 a month for their service. Very disgruntled.

The Smarthub makes setting up these cameras super quick. The toughest thing about setting everything up, is securing the camera mounts, but that only takes a few screws. The cameras can be placed virtually anywhere, and offer an inversion mode for upside down mounting. Once you are ready, plug the hub into an open port on your router, load the batteries into the cameras and put them on their mounts. Next you will use the app to locate the cameras, and the basics are all set. From here you can start customizing each camera on what type of alerts you want, or what zones in your camera's field of view you want monitored. The smartHub uses its own 128b encrypted wifi to connect each of the cameras, which has a max range of 300ft. However, the Ultra 2 cameras are also capable of bypassing the SmartHub and connecting directly to your home router, this might prove to be more beneficial for some people, especially if you do not have an extra ethernet port available to connect the hub to. Also, your home router might have a better range than the included hub. You can connect the cameras directly to your router by following the steps in the app. Keep in mind this setup will NOT work if you are NOT going to keep a live subscription for each camera, because otherwise no recordings will happen. Arlo recommends a minimum internet speed of 3mbs/2mbs, no matter how the cameras are connected. Although higher broadband services will work much better for the large video files. Your Arlo cameras can be viewed from practically anywhere you have internet access. They have both an Android and iOS app. You can even log into their website from any pc, Apple or Chromebook, to view or make changes to your cameras. The cameras are actually very nice. For everything they offer, the units are pretty compact. They are able to easily fit into the palm of your hand. The casing is a solid plastic able to withstand some bumps and most weather conditions. I dropped mine a few times while trying to reach the mount, it fell about 12 feetto the ground, and was fine, no issues. Of course I would be a little more hesitant over the driveway, not much can withstand that kind of torture. The cameras have a built in spotlight, siren, speaker and microphone. Each camera is capable of two way voice audio, which works pretty good. The LED spotlight is bright enough to provide 15 to 20 feet of good definition, and 30ft in general. The equivalent can be said about the night vision, except you can get a greater distance with minimal obstructions around. The effective color night vision is only available with the use of the built in spotlight. You can turn off the spotlight and night vision for low light color video, but the quality will be limited.I was unable to find a legitimate Lux rating on the cameras and tech support had no information on that rating, I can tell you that with my own testing, I would guess the Lux rating to be around 5 to 10.I was unable to get any image at all in very low light areas without the spotlight or night vision. Dimly lit areas were still able to produce a decent color image.  The cameras have a 180degree wide angle lense, which is capable of capturing what used to take 2 cameras. There is a 12x digital zoom, that you can use at anytime during live or recorded videos.Arlo offers an auto track and zoom feature for any videos under 4k resolution, provided you have a subscription. This is good for narrow fields of view, but larger areas could suffer from this feature,as it would be difficult to track more than one subject on opposite sides of the screen.Activity zones can be outlined to whatever shape or size you want, and each camera can even have multiple zones (again sub. needed) The cameras themselves have an 8 megapixel image sensor, which is capable of recording video in 4K,2K,1080p, and 720p. The batteries are advertised to last 6 months, but that is actually very dependent on how active the camera is or how often it is viewed. If you have the camera facing a very busy street, every car and person going by will trigger some sort of recognition in the camera. For a very busy camera the battery could die out in 1 to 2 weeks, but a camera facing a boring hallway that gets 1 or 2 hits a day could easily last 6 months. It only takes about 3.5 hours to fully charge a dead battery with the included cable, 2.5 hours with the optional external charger. I would recommend getting either a solar power source, or outdoor cable to keep an over active camera going at all time.  The video quality is exceptional for a security camera. Facial features and clothing are pretty easy to identify, and license plates of cars can be read up to 30 feet away give or take some, depending on the speed of the motion in the frames.  There are different subscriptions for different needs. You can apply different subscriptions and services to different cameras, only 1 plan is needed per camera to enjoy cloud storage and notifications. NO subscription:Without a subscription the Ultra 2 cameras can only record video clips to an optional micro SD card inserted into the bottom of the smarthub. These video clips are only accessible when you are in range of your home network signal. External viewing of these clips can be possible with someadditional effort. You need to allow port forwarding to the SD card in the app, and then setup the port forwarding configuration in your home router.Any clips recorded will be for general motion alerts, and will not display the specific kind of motion triggered, nor will there be smoke/Co2 alarm detection, activity zones, or e911 services. Smart Premier:2k video cloud storage for 30 days.  person, vehicle, animal and package detectionsmoke/Co2 alarm detectionactivity zonespush notificationse911 services (not available for single camera plans) Smart Elite:4k video cloud storage for 30 days.  person, vehicle, animal and package detectionsmoke/Co2 alarm detectionactivity zonespush notificationse911 services (not available for single camera plans) CVR:CVR is available for the Ultra cameras, but only in the online CVR subscription service, currently there is no way to do CVR to your own local storage device. . CVR = Constant Video Recording. Without CVR, recordings are only done in small time frames, like 10 seconds or more, depending on how long the motion is happening for. CVR records everything all day, every day, for 30 days straight. The CVR plan will still send notifications for motion triggers, just like the premium and elite plans.--It is also recommended to add a constant power supply to any camera with a CVR plan. Solar power options are available too. Apparently there is no maximum number of cameras that you can have under 1 account. However, once you reach 5 cameras (5 cameras gets you a multi camera discount), you will be charged individually for each additional camera to whatever number you want. Although there is a max of 5 cameras for non subscribers. an emergency siren can be activated from your smartphone or computere911 can be set up to notify 911 with an emergency at your address,or you can notify a friend or neighbor, so they can check on your house. Overall the quality of these security spotlight cameras is great. The camera records everything with great detail, no mistaking what anything is. Plus you can have the spotlight turn on automatically to help frighten people away, and if that's not enough you can set it to trigger the siren as well. Cameras can also be set up at front doors to alert you of package deliveries, or communicate with anyone at your door. I also really like the idea that the cameras can be triggered not just by motion, but also by sounds. You can get alerts to your phone if the fire alarms or CO2 alarms are going off, in which you can quickly press the 911 alert in the app to notify the authorities of an emergency to your address. It's super easy to add as many cameras as needed to your house, to keep everything and everyone safe.

This pack comes with an Arlo hub, which is the wireless communication hub for its two cameras. Also included are two battery packs (one for each camera), a proprietary charging cable and related charger. There are also two different types of mounting adapters. Setting this system up and running was painless. I first installed the two batteries, then used the accompanying charger and cable to charge each one. It took a couple of hours for each to reach a full charge. The batteries, according to Arlo, can provide power to a camera for months (they indicate up to 6 months) before needing a recharge. Wall power to a camera will keep a battery fully charged. Before setting up the cameras, first connect the Hub to your network. This is done by way of a wired connection to your router. Once connected and the batteries are charged, the Arlo app walks you through the Add Device process. Once a camera is connected, it requires you to name the device for later identification. I have one called the Pool Camera and another called the Front Door camera. Once the two cameras were added, my biggest challenge was deciding which mounting unit to use. Two different mounts are included with this pack. One is magnetic and holds onto the back of the camera’s housing like there’s no tomorrow. The second mount screws into the back of a camera, much like an older camera screwed onto a tri-pod. I nearly messed up prior to receiving this system. I was ready to have an electrician install power outlets next to where the cameras would be located. It turns out that the Arlo cameras use a proprietary charging cable, not a typical power/USB cable. And only one charging cable and one charger comes with this system. Further, the charging cable is for inside use, and I had intended both for outside use. I went to the Arlo site to look at accessories but found that the costs added up quickly. Like when you purchase a car, initial and long-term costs should be a consideration. As such, accessories, replacement parts, and subscription charges should all be a consideration. Back to business. The Arlo app, which you can download from the Google Play and IOS stores, is feature packed. I found all of them easy to use and listed a number of them next: • Activity Zones – This lets you identify one or more areas of each camera’s view port that you want to highlight for activity. Thus, if someone comes into a highlighted zone, you’ll be notified. By way of example, the pool camera has a view of the pool and two different sets of doors. Thus, if someone tries to enter or leave through one of those doors, I’ll be notified. • Motion Sensitivity – This lets you define how sensitive you want the camera to be in detecting motion. • Video Settings – Brightness, Auto HDR, Local 4k Streaming, Auto Zoom & Tracking, Rotating the image 180 degrees, whether to turn on the spotlight or not, and more • Power Management – You can choose from Best video (may reduce battery), Optimize (balance between video quality and battery life), and Best Battery Life (may reduce video quality). • Audio Settings – Reduce Wind Noise, Microphone (allows it to be used), Speaker (allows it to be used), and Speaker Volume (0% to 100%) • Arlo Hub Modes – You can Arm the cameras (motion detection is on), Disarm them (motion is turned off), Schedule when to turn motion detection on/off, and GeoFencing (Manage by your location) • Two-way Talk – Essentially, you can turn a camera’s microphone on/off in order to talk with someone in close proximity to the camera. I ran into a problem when using the 2-way talk. This befuddled me to the point that I ended up calling tech support. In the end, it wasn’t a problem with the Arlo at all. I have a Samsung S20 Ultra that is my day-to-day phone. When testing out the two-way talk feature, I could hear the person near the camera until I turned on the microphone to speak to them. When I did that, I could no longer hear the person talking. Turn off the microphone, and I could hear them once again. I eventually tried this on my backup Google Pixel 3XL and I had no problems at all. The microphone issue was limited to the Samsung. Hmm. Now, using my Samsung phone again, I tried using the microphone option again but this time while wearing Bluetooth earbuds. This time it worked perfectly. Remove the earbuds and it once again failed to work. Hmm. It occurred to me that I was also had a Samsung watch paired to my phone. I turned Bluetooth off on the watch and, applause, that fixed the problem. I reported this to Arlo technical support in the event they have Samsung users purchase their products. In thinking about this, I pump music out my phone’s speaker without any problem. I even use the speaker on my phone when on phone calls. And all the while my watch is Bluetooth paired to my phone. On a different note, I ended up purchasing a 128gb micro-SD card for the Arlo Hub – thus allowing me to store videos locally. With Arlo’s Smart Home, this system gives you person detection, package detection, and vehicle detection. Plus, it offers auto-zooming and tracking. It appears that package detection is only assignable to one camera, which you choose. Important: you don’t get these advanced features unless you subscribe to one of their plans. The Premier Plan costs $9.99/mo and saves up to 2k video recordings, 30 days of history. This plan includes Person, Vehicle and Animal Detection, Package Detection, and e911 Emergency Calling. The Elite Plan costs $14.99/mo and includes 4k video recordings for up to 5 cameras for 30 days. It allows for Person, Vehicle and Animal Detection, Package Detection, and E911 calling. After much testing, I personally think the Arlo Ultra cameras and Hub are a well thought out solution. I really like the features built into these cameras and think the video quality is top-notch. And while I think this is a solid 5-star solution - and that is how I’m going to rate it - not only are you paying a good amount for your initial purchase, but the costs add up quickly if you find yourself having to buy accessories and/or subscribing to one of the Smart Home plans.
