Camera alerts are erratic - can open and close garage door in middle of frame, walk up and down my driveway, and get no alert. 4K features are very limited. Doesn’t work with HomeKit Secure Video. Would have returned this if I hadn’t discarded the box. Beyond disappointed.

    A great camera kit

Setup The set up was fairly easy, but I did run into a snag of getting my account set up. I called the support line, and was able to get help immediately. My support guy walked me through every step of the process from upgrading the firmware to making sure the camera was working properly. I then had an issue with the battery, so he RMA'd a replacement battery which has since arrived. Features The Arlo is stocked with features that I'm still experimenting with. I appreciate the mount they gave, but I went ahead and bought the outdoor mount that is more secure than the magnetic mount that came with the camera. It should have came with the screw mount. Performance Everything works perfectly except for the local 4k streaming. I recently got the Netgear Orbi, so I know it's not my network. Other than this, the views are crisp and easy. I tried doing the two way speaker but it seemed very quiet. I'll have to continue testing this feature. Expectations The Arlo met my expectations, but I'm not sure if I will be renewing the subscription past the 1 year that was given in the box. It's something that I will be thinking about and evaulating over the next year. The other day I did recommend this camera to my coworker. He went out and bought it after showing him the app. The app is super and simple to use. I just wish the local 4k streaming worked better. Arlo provided me with this product free of charge, but my opinions expressed here are honest and based on my use of the product.

    Easy Setup / Great Picture

Very easy to setup. Installation of the camera once you install the mount is just a single screw and a magnet. Just aim where you need to. After that, you connect the smart hub and download a mobile app for configuration. Configuration in app allows you to setup where the camera can ignore or what to alert on. Might be able to catch the wild turkeys that visit our front lawn every once in a while. At least we'll be able to catch those package deliveries that don't ring the bell/knock when they drop off a package. Super high resolution to help catch those porch pirates. The time to alert you might not be quick enough to actually see, but you'll have the video proof. Zoom in on license plates even, if in field of view, and if close enough. That all depends on your setup. If it is a major concern, think about where you setup the device. Love the totally wireless nature of the camera. Have yet to fully test the 3-6 month battery life. First time might be on the low side with watching live so often. Until the novelty wears off. Can of course scare our son when he's waiting outside with the two-way communications. Haven't tried to see what dog's reaction yet is. Might have to get the solar charger for the battery so we never have to recharge. Do be sure to setup the e911 address so you can alert police of the house's address, not your physical location, if you notice anything suspicious remotely. The night vision is typically decent enough for most needs. However, if you happen to catch something live that you want to see better, you can turn on the embedded spotlight. You get a free year of rolling 30-day cloud storage so you can backtrack and see something after it happens. Curious how late your kid is coming home? They won't be able to sneek in any more, at least not the front door. Waiting to see how well it survives a major storm, or even just a minor snowstorm. Recommend getting more than one camera at once instead of just one.

    Awesome DiY security camera!

This little camera is, in a nutshell, is amazing. I have heard of DiY security cameras in recent years as well as many brands. Though I haven't tried other brands or products before related to this, I am very, very impressed with this product because of the ease to set up and use, as well as the app used to utilize this product. Being that I haven't used something like this before, one of my biggest concerns was the range on this thing. I haven't fully tested out the extent of the range, but 20+ feet so far is good. I'm sure it would not be an issue going further. Additionally, the camera's battery does require charging, though it is also impressive that a full battery charge will last an entire week, and it only takes a couple hours to charge when the battery is dead. Furthermore, the camera does record and can be used with 4k resolution, and the two-way audio is great for when wanting to listen in on things going on in the environment (such as spying on pets, for example). I will say that it may take a little time to get used to using the app and maneuvering around settings, but once you are familiar with things/settings, it is a breeze. I will say that I haven't tried the camera outdoors, yet, but I believe the camera would hold up fine because it can be mounted and has a strong magnet to hold it in place/shift it around. Definitely would recommend this to anyone looking to set up a DiY security system.

I like to play around with new tech before I put it into service. So, I first used my Arlo Ultra as a “kitty cam” (a name it has retained) to spy on my five felines’ misadventures while they believed they were unsupervised. This was a great tuning exercise, as I got better at choosing a useful level of zoom to get my “window of interest” and then selecting the trigger area. I was amazed to see how elaborate a shape I could create! I quickly learned what I needed it to do and why. For example, I started off just wanting to spy on the cats on a whim. Receiving notifications every time one of them moved inside the trigger area got old very fast. I turned the “animal alert” feature off, and since I didn’t want my own movements to trigger it, I turned off “person alerts” as well. The system requires that something trigger it, So I left “vehicle alerts” enabled. Heck, if a car drives through my living room, I’d like to know about it. All in all, it wasn’t difficult to get it right. I found this a pleasant surprise, because what makes a technology powerful is that it can do a LOT, and that usually necessitates a complex setup. It was pretty easy, and I actually had fun doing it. Once I had things set up and tuned to my liking, I just left it alone. I would occasionally turn on alerts, and I was notified quickly. I am very impressed by the video quality and the ability to zoom. It is also a huge bonus to be able to tweak settings remotely. The Arlo Ultra turned out to be a WAY better device than I expected, and at a good price point. Even more surprising is the long battery life, even with features like motion tracking, a spotlight, 4k video, and infrared (IR) night vision.

Finally a camera that lets you see DETAIL

The level of detail this camera enables you to see is insane with the 4K video!! It's perfect to have hidden on a porch so you can easily monitor people that come to your door or in your driveway. The best part is there's enough detail that this camera provides that if someone did something you'd be able to see clearly who they are and what they did if it was in view of the camera. The no wire setup makes it easy to mount, setup and use! The software/recording works great for me so far and allows you to easily review video. The only thing that I've noticed is sometimes there's a bit of lag in the video starting and lag in the audio when using it with two-way communication Outside of that it works really well. The system allows easy expandability so you can easily add more cameras to the system. As with other security cameras, you can set zones so that alarms or notifications go off when certain events happen. I'd say that the battery life is great so far but I'm sure if you're looking at the video all the time or constantly have activity setting it off that your mileage on the battery is definitely going to vary. We use our system to monitor our front door and the area in front of our condo with parked cars. It definitely provides enough detail that we can be confident that in the event something happened we'd be able to do something about it. I'd recommend starting out with this system and add on more cameras to expand your system later. In addition, if you have a smart home Arlo makes it easy to integrate to Google, Alexa, etc.

I have a few other brands in use but they all seemed lacking in many areas. Resolution, wifi connectivity issues etc etc. And gettng them to connect and stay connected was always a hassle. Setting up the Arlo Ultra was so simply, I thought I was missing some steps or doing something wrong, but it was that simple. Everything was thought through and intuitive. The camera feels good. The battery port operates smoothly and is well designed. The use of magnetism is well done, and positioning the camera was easy. My HOA was more problems. Picture loads quickly, signal from base is good and strong even though its a floor apart. Image is clear, bright and defined. Love it. The siren and light are nice touches, and the voice seems good. I like the digital zoom and positioning which is amazing and shows the camera had a incredible degree of view. I will be exploring some skin options as the white stands out too much against my walls. All in all, I am impressed by the design and function of this camera. Can't find any faults yet.... Definitely a quality product.

Great camera with room for improvement

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

So, let's start on a positive note. The picture quality is outstanding. They're not kidding about the detail. I've been incredibly impressed by the consistently clear focus. Personally, I'm using this for indoor security, so I can't speak to the outdoor quality, but based on my own tests throughout differently lit rooms in my house, I feel pretty safe endorsing the outdoor quality, as well. I tested in various rooms of my house with lighting at both ends of the spectrum, i.e. from my living room, where the light is more than comparable to, say, a front porch (a full wall of windows taller than me that let in loads of sunlight) to my bathroom, a place where you can hide in complete darkness if you so wish, and throughout the rest of the house with varying degrees of light exposure. In case this virtual tour of my house is confusing you, I mean to say that I tested this in various lighting conditions and found the quality to be consistently high. Segueing from lighting conditions to night vision, it’s quite crisp. I wasn't squinting or guessing at various shapes. Again, I didn't test this outdoors, so I simulated as best I could by testing in the darkest room in my house. I tested during the day when some small amount of light crept down my hall and cast a few shadows on the wall, and in complete darkness at night with the door shut, which is likely darker than anyone using it outdoors at night will ever get because the moon and stars exist. The spotlight may not have lit up the night for me, but it did light up an entire room and would make an excellent flashlight in times of power outage. I found the sight line and sensitivity to motion to be really impressive, for the most part (we'll get to my complaints later). The fish eye effect is much diminished and it picks up things I would not expect it to pick up, like my cat's tail at the very edge of the picture creeping by in very dim lighting with a piece of furniture obstructing the view of the rest of her. Overall, I feel like the clarity, field of vision, sensitivity to motion, night vision, with spotlight or otherwise, is mostly really quality here. There is one glaring problem, though. Confession (and story) time: I set this up as a Cat Espionage system so I could figure out which of my cats was pooping on my bathmat. So, with that in mind I set it at what I felt to be an appropriate height and angle that gave me the best view of the entire room. I made sure I was set up for animals and waited. Nothing. However, later, when I walked into my bathroom, a nasty surprise was awaiting me. That’s fine. Maybe the suspect got juuuuust out of range. He’s incredibly stealthy. So, I reposition and go again. Now, the suspect is a Maine Coon. I mention his breed here not to be a crazy cat lady, but to help set up a visual for you. For anyone who doesn’t know, Maine Coons are one of the largest breeds of cats and they’re very fluffy, which makes them look even bigger. My cat looks like a small grey lion. The camera did not pick him up at all. No motions detected, no animals detected, nothing. In fact, it didn’t pick up any of my (rather large and hard to miss) cats when they were walking around on the floor in full view of the camera. I actually heard one of them wandering around in my bathroom and immediately opened the phone app and the website live feeds. She was right there, walking around as clear as day (as 4K even). My settings were correct and my notifications were on, but the camera just didn’t register her at all. Nor has it ever registered any of my cats unless it catches their tails in the far distance or they stick their giant heads right in front of it. It’s utterly bizarre in such an otherwise impressive camera. A camera that can catch a flutter of motion from me halfway down the hall and shrouded in darkness managed to miss three 15 pound cats with the lights on and the camera angled right at them. I realize this sounds silly because I’m talking about cats, but the fact that it’s missing something that big with no obstructions and ideal lighting is concerning in general. You can’t miss my cats, but it did, so what else will it miss? As far as installation, it’s a total breeze. I didn’t mount mine because I wanted to move it around, but it’s pretty much insert tab A into slot B easy. I feel confident that I could hand it to my mom and she would be fine. I would feel less confident about handing it over to her for the initial set up. I understand that this is a review of the hardware, but since the software is integral to the device, and indeed, a selling point, I’m going to mention some things about the app. The first time I set it up, it was an absolute nightmare. What should have been crazy easy was ridiculous. It took me half an hour to get it to recognize the base and several hours after that for it to even acknowledge the camera. Even then, the app wasn’t working with camera at all and if I wanted to see anything, I had to go to the website for a live feed. I repeated the process the next day and it went off without a hitch, which is great, but this app absolutely has to be reliable and it wasn’t. Everything is perfectly synced now, but the day I got it? Total rubbish. I will note that I haven’t had any trouble since (that I’m aware of), but I felt this was still something worth mentioning. Those are my two big complaints. I noticed that some other reviewers were unhappy about having to charge the camera, but honestly, it charges very quickly and it lasts forever, so it hasn’t been an issue for me. Let’s see, the audio is good (and fun; I spent some time scaring those giant cats of mine off of places they know they’re not allowed), the manual light switch is nice and simple. And fun. Really. I cannot recommend enough that you try watching your cats or your dogs or your hamsters even, on live feed from somewhere else and then turn the light and mic on and say in your scary voice, “I see you.” Entertainment for hours, plus you keep them off of your counters or couches or what have you. As a plus, if they still don’t get down, you can still trigger the alarm remotely. About the alarm: it’s loud enough without being obnoxious, which is nice. I imagine it’s a bit more startling with several cameras. Either way, it’s definitely enough to let someone know that you know that they’re there without waking up your entire neighborhood. Despite the problems I’ve had with it, I really like it a lot and I’d consider it a worthy investment, esp. if I were going to use it outside. Disclaimer: Arlo provided me with this product free of charge, but the content and opinions expressed here are my own based on my use of the product. Obviously. I doubt they would appreciate the brief and unfulfilling foray into cat espionage especially since the suspect remains at large.

Setup: Setup was very simple and involved the following steps: 1) Download Arlo app to your mobile device 2) Select your device (in this case the 4k Arlo Ultra camera) 3) Plug in the base station 4) Name the base station 5) Automatically update the firmware 6) Prep camera (which involves inserting the battery) 7) Install camera 8) Setup preferences All in all it was a very simple process to get everything going and took about 15 minutes. The order of operations is important due to the mostly automated process – pay attention! I had to restart the setup process once because I got ahead of myself. Some concerns I had and others may also have are that the base station does not blend in well to where I have it plugged into my router. All my AV/ tech is black as is the entertainment center it’s all sitting on and the white base station sticks our noticeably. Another possible concern is that the camera itself is only held onto the base by a magnet. While I am not scared of the camera falling off and getting damaged (it feels like there’s a rare earth magnet utilized), I am concerned that it can be stolen by more brazen criminals if installed outdoors in an easily accessible area. Features Some callout features that everyone will have: 1) 4k HDR 2) Enhanced Night Vision 3) Integrated Spotlight 4) 180* View 5) Noise Cancellation This camera has GREAT image quality and can handle drastic high contrast scenarios due to the HDR. The only time the image really gets washed out is around sunset when the sun shines directly onto the blinds on our patio door and floods the entire room with light. Night vision has been a treat! The camera has had no issues resolving images in the dark from a range of about 30 feet – the maximum distance from the camera in the room it’s currently installed in. I can very clearly tell who or what is at that range. The spotlight feature is great. While the camera very obviously doesn’t need it due to the night vision, it’s a great deterrent because it lets an unexpected visitor know that they’ve been noticed by shining a decently bright light at them. Because our camera is indoors, it’s mostly ended up being a very advanced nightlight when we cut through the living room to raid the fridge in the middle of the night. However, it’s comforting to know that it’s there when we’re away during the evening. There’s a small issue that I get periodically, and it involves the integrated spotlight. My camera is installed in a corner and every once in awhile the spotlight catches the two walls and blows out the image and I can’t see anything. I’m pretty sure it’s a bug as cutting the feed and restarting it brings it back. Hopefully, a firmware update will fix it. Truth be told I’ve not been in a scenario to have to utilize the noise cancelling as there isn’t any wind in our living room but it’s nice to know that it’s there. Some other miscellaneous features are a siren, two way audio, and local recording via the base station. All work well. Features with Arlo Premiere 1) AI Detection 2) Custom Activity Zones 3) Lock Screen Notifications 4) E911 AI object detection works pretty well with people. The camera will automatically zoom in and track on movement that it determines to be a person. It’s also supposed to detect pets, vehicles, and packages. Our camera could not detect our cat whenever she was on screen – I’m not sure if it was due to the positioning of our camera, size of our cat, or both. I did not have an opportunity to test the vehicle or package detection. But you can see how those could prove to be useful. I’ve not had the opportunity to test custom activity zones but this lets the user set specific zones within the camera’s field of view to send alerts when it detects activity and ignore anything else outside of that zone. Lock screen notifications work very well! It’s never failed to let me know that there’s movement on the camera. E911 allows the system to be integrated to the 911 network in your local area in case of emergency. Say you get a notification on your phone while you’re on vacation and you see an intruder in your home. This feature allows you to call 911 from your home instead of the 911 network where your phone happens to be. You can also call a friend if it’s not an emergency that necessitates calling the authorities. Performance Performance was great in that using the camera system was not noticeable. It integrated into our lives very easily. Image and sound quality were great while streaming live and off recordings. The only noticeable issue was the lag. It takes a second or two for the stream to kick in when tapping into the camera and noticeable latency (1-3 seconds) between actions happening live and when they appear on the stream. I’m not sure if this is a function of our home internet speeds or our older router (120 down/ 12 up; Netgear R7000) but it wasn’t that big of a deal. Conclusion This is a great system! The price, while expensive, is comparable to the other brands available (Nest, Ring, etc.) It’s easy to setup, very capable, and easily accessible to even the most novice user. There are some minor bugs and concerns but they are easily overlooked when evaluating the entire system. Note: Arlo provided me with this product free of charge but the content and my opinions expressed here are honest and based on my use of the product

We have three different surveillance systems, but this one is absolutely the best. The picture is very clear 4K quality. There are no wires on the camera, it captures audio and video. The camera system has a two way audio system as well which works great. You can also set up your camera to set off an alarm (Not super loud but very effective). To set the system up and install the camera took less than 20 minutes. The longest part of the set up was deciding where to place the camera. The camera install was very easy as well. The only downfall is a scheduling aspect of their app. However it is a minor problem. Our camera is placed in an area that has a lot of movement and traffic. The camera recharges in less than four hours, and you don't like charging the camera they sell accessories such as solar chargers so you do not have to.
