Needs Improvement, Inconsistent Camera Stream
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went on-board with Arlo camera systems back in early 2017 as I have been a long time consumer of higher end Netgear wireless routers. Originally I purchased the Arlo Pro, then the Arlo Pro 2 cameras, and now the Ultra. I will say each version of the cameras have their plus and minus, so far with the Ultra it's mostly minus. I have only used these cameras for one day and my thoughts on these cameras might change with firmware updates. I have ten cameras total, most are Pro 2, and I just bought the 2 camera Ultra package with the new smart hub. I know what to expect out of an Arlo camera system, as I have been using the Arlo camera's for about two years. I installed the Arlo Ultra base station and proceeded to remove my existing cameras from my old base station, when I was finished syncing my existing cameras to the Arlo Ultra base station, I started trying out the new "4K" cameras. The Arlo Ultra cameras added to the base station seamlessly, but as soon as I got about 20 feet away from the base station the cameras disconnected, would not re-connect. I have Arlo Pro, and Pro 2 cameras over a hundred feet away through several walls that work fine and respond normally. It could be a firmware problem related to the Arlo Ultra cameras themselves, but who knows when or if this will get resolved. Today periodically I have been checking on my camera system. Almost every time I go to view the Arlo Ultra camera the connection times out and I am not able to see the video. When the video does come through I will say that it appears to be clearer and have better night vision than the Arlo Pro 2. The viewing angle is considerably wider, I did have to mount the Arlo Ultra in a slightly different location than the Pro 2 camera that I had previously. The Arlo Ultra still has a bad fish eye effect. It is possible through software rendering of the videos Arlo is able to strip that fish eye effect, but it does affect your live view of the Ultra camera. I also noticed that it does come with Arlo smart for free for one year, but it appears you will have to pay extra to save your recordings in 4k. I am also an existing Arlo customer paid in full for a year for my plan, where does that leave me with this new system? I doubt Netgear will honor the one year free Arlo Smart subscription for existing customers but to be fair I have not contacted Arlo about this yet. Another fun fact is you can only view 4k live stream on your Arlo Ultra camera while you are at the same location as your camera base station. For me, reliability is important, and right now I do not feel confident that the Arlo Ultra will capture all of the events occurring due to the camera coming on and offline frequently. I sure hope this isn't a hardware issue and a firmware issue that can be resolved with updates. The Arlo Ultra camera does have a lot more adjustments available than the Arlo Pro 2 in regards to video settings and color at night, and the auto tracking feature is pretty impressive. The auto tracking works pretty well, I am surprised to see that it works as well as it does but I do not have a Nest IQ to compare it to so I can't comment on that. The new magnetic charger and corresponding port on the Arlo Ultra camera conceptually is great, but I cannot test the weather resistant capabilities of the charging port because the single USB shipped is only for indoor use. The charger is extremely easy to attach in comparison to the micro USB from the Arlo Pro 2, theoretically it will be a better option for outdoor charging but that remains to be seen. Arlo Ultra was allegedly to be released before the 2018 holiday season and missed that release due to reasons unknown. It appears with Arlo Ultra now being finally released there are still some kinks to work out. If you want to have the latest and greatest tech sometimes you have to deal with bugs. If you are not OK with being the test bunny then you might consider sticking with the Arlo Pro 2, which has proven to be reliable in my experience with it. I often adopt early generation tech, I am used to dealing with bugs and inconsistencies. Hope this helps!

Easiest set up
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having owned other older cameras in the past, I almost couldn’t believe how easy it is to set up this whole system, even a child can do it. Just download the app, connect the base station to your internet router and it will find the cameras automatically. However, I have to mention that it did take us an extra 10 minutes to set up because the both the base station and the cameras needed the firmware update but the process went very smoothly. I like that they give you two different types of mount which is perfect for our use. We put one camera outside near our front door, at first we thought it would be a challenge to get a right angle because we have a lot of plants on our porch but it’s not a problem at all because you can rotate the mount and the camera has wide angle and can give clear view of the areas that we want to see. Plus the activity zones allow us to set areas to avoid getting motion alerts from the plants. Unlike our old camera, we would get a crazy amount of alerts whenever the wind blows or when the light changes and that’s why we were not able to put a camera out here. My wife does a lot of online shopping, now she is very happy because she can see when her orders arrive. We can also see which neighborhood cat frequents our front yard as its litter box. I have yet try and see if I can yell at the cat through the camera to scare it away. Maybe might need another camera closer to that particular area. We haven’t decided on a permanent location for the second camera yet so we just let it sit on the magnetic mount and put it on a book shelf for now while we are still playing with the settings. I find that it can sit pretty securely even without screwing it in place and at the same time I can move it around from room to room depending on our needs. So far we like everything about the camera, it has great video quality, amazing activity zone sensing, easy setup, adjustable field of view, overall it exceeded my expectations. At first I thought I would want to be able to tilt/pan the camera remotely but with its great wide angle lens and pinch zoom ability, I realized that the tilt/pan is not necessary. Oh! The auto zoom and tracking feature is also great. It’s also nice that they include one year Premier Smart package for free which will give us plenty of time to try out the different “Smart” features. I’m so glad that I finally got my hands on this camera and now thinking of areas around the house that could use the camera and ready to add more units to take advantage of what this camera can do. Vast Improvement versus past Arlo systems
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Disclosure: Arlo has provided me with this product free of charge through a friends and family program, but the content and my opinions expressed here are honest and based on my use of the product. That being said, I've used the Arlo cameras for my home for a few years now, and must say that they new 4K Ultra+ camera system is a vast improvement over my previous camera systems, especially when it comes to the battery life, as well as the fact that it's rechargeable. Here are the features: 1. 4K Video w/HDR - the image and video quality is amazing 2. Auto-zoom and tracking of people/objects in the field of view 3. 180 degree viewing angle 4. Clear 2-way audio - also helps to reduce noise from the wind 5. Color Night Vision 6. Integrated Spotlight for added security 7. Built-in Smart Siren There are a few other features, but these were the ones that I find to be the most noteworthy and useful for my purposes. Overall, the 2 camera system was very easy to setup, and familiarize myself with, however, I would say that the added features did take some time to figure out as the only instructions you receive with the package is a 3 step guide to downloading the Arlo app, and getting started. The app guides you through the setup, but from the standpoint of learning about using all of the various features mentioned above, I received an email from Arlo two days after setup that describe each in greater detail which is nice, but would have bene more helpful during the initial setup. Either way, I am still so happy with the performance of this system, I felt compelled to give a 5-star review and will be converting the rest of my cameras to the Ultra+, and effectively upgrade them all. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a competent and easy to use security system.

Great Wire-Free 4k Security Camera!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this camera for about 2 months now and have been able to thoroughly test most of the options. Overall the experience has been excellent! There were a few minor connectivity bugs and glitches with the app, but nothing that didn't fix itself after a short time. Hardware: Overall this product feels very premium, which is good considering the premium price. It seems very durable, and the mounting options work great. The camera looks great and blends in well in our living room. Setup: Setup was very easy, and I didn't run in to any glitches. Simply plugged in the base to a port on our router and followed the instructions to add the camera. Connectivity: Out of the 2 months I have been using this camera, I haven't experience any lost connections. Every time I have pulled up the app it has worked great. Video Quality: This is where this camera excels! The 4k quality is amazing, and you can truly see much better detail than any other camera I have used in the past. I can see a huge benefit in this if you ever need the footage to identify someone, or a license plate. App Features: This is another thing this camera (and Arlo in general) excels at. They have some great features in their app, such as the ability to select zones that are ignored on the camera, and ability to have the camera identify motion from a person, animal, vehicle, etc. This has come in very handy, since our 80 lb dog always sets off motion sensors. Because of this feature, we can have it ignore animal movement, which has been awesome! We no longer get 20+ alerts each day from a camera. Integrations: This is my only knock on the camera. Arlo has promised Homekit support, but it's not yet available. I was hoping to wait to test the integration before my review, but I finally just decided to review without the feature. It sounds like Arlo is working on the integration, but it is not available yet. All other integrations seem to work well, and their scheduling and geofencing features are good. Overall: Overall I love this camera! It's the best camera I have tested, from the quality of the camera and video feed, to the app features. What makes this so awesome is the number of features, plus the fact it's wireless! The battery has been lasting great too, and I haven't had to recharge it yet in 2 months. I wish they add-on cameras were a little cheaper, but I plan to keep this in my highest traffic area and add a few more to the system! Note: Arlo provided me with this product free of charge, but the content and my opinions expressed here are honest and based on my use of the product.

A capable wireless camera that differentiates
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.PROS - Long Battery Life - High Resolution - e911 Capability - Advanced modes and detection options - Local SD card storage - Competitively priced cloud service CONS - Spot light not bright enough - No free cloud storage option There is A LOT to love about the Arlo Ultra. Arlo has been perfecting this concept of a wireless security camera for some time and I think their efforts really *shine* through in this latest addition to the Arlo family. That all goes without saying, but there are a couple things this camera could do better - though they are far from deal breakers. Setup was very easy. After setting up the hub, setting up the camera to charge, and downloading the app I was up and running in about 10 minutes. The magnetic mounting provides plenty of flexibility in mounting location – I was able to anchor and secure the mount in only 5 minutes. There is a smorgasbord of settings, options, and modes that should fit 99% of what people need. You have your geo-location settings, zone detection, sound and alarm detection, along with some smarter features that can detect people, vehicles, animals, and packages. These options help provide actionable notifications rather than a simple “your camera saw something”. Some of these features, such as the package detection are in Beta, but it’s an indication of more to come. Some new hardware features come to this particular model including a spotlight which allows color video even at night. The clarity of the video largely depends on the size of the space you are trying to illuminate. I found that for a small to medium sized room the spotlight was perfect, but for a large space like a yard I might stick to the IR video. The hardware itself feels extremely well built and sturdy. All the electronics are contained within a unibody plastic shell. I’m confident that this camera can survive the elements, even with daily exposure. There are many options to record and store your video footage. If you are looking for the basics, the Arlo Ultra can save video to a SD card installed in the hub. So, just in case somebody gets close enough to your camera to snatch it, you can be assured that your video is cached safely in the hub. Additionally, Arlo has a cloud service called Smart. They have different tiers which include more cameras, longer record periods, and various features including e911 capability (where Arlo can contact emergency services). Given the extent of the features both common and unique, the service is very competitively priced compared to competitors in this space. Overall, if you’re looking for a versatile 4K camera with several software features that distinguish itself from the pack – the Arlo Ultra is a great choice!

Limited playback options
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup: SmartHub: 5 of 5 Camera: 2 of 5 After installing the Arlo app on my phone (I’m against requiring an app for setup, but appears to be required), I was able to quickly connect the Arlo SmartHub. The next step of adding the camera wasn’t nearly as easy. I don’t know what the issue was, but it took 3 attempts before the app finally found the camera. Features: Night Vision: 5 of 5 2-way Audio: 3 of 5. Had 45-sec delay sometimes. Audio quality was good. 4k HD: Unable to properly test as I don’t have a 4k device. HD quality is fantastic. Wide-angle lens: 5 of 5. Motion Detection: 2 of 5. At initial setup, motion was detected but then stopped working. I read the troubleshooting guide about fixing motion detection problems but was unable to fix it. The light on the camera appeared stating it sensed motion, but the motion notification never appeared on my phone until after I rebooted the SmartHub. I don’t know what the issue was, so it scares me that I could be away and motion detection stops working again. Performance and expectations: 1 of 5 As mentioned, there were 45-sec delays at times. I understand that video needs uploaded, re-encoded, and then downloaded to phone. I wouldn’t expect any delays greater than 15 seconds (even that’s too much but barely acceptable) so 45 second delays is more than unacceptable. The SmartHub has port 80 (http) and 554 (rtsp) open, among other ports. I expected there to be a way to view the video via one of those ports, either with a browser or VLC (or similar). Unfortunately there does not appear to be a way to do that. Not only is there no way to do that, but the Internet is REQUIRED to view the video even though everything is on the same subnet. I would’ve expected being able to view a direct stream from the SmartHub/Camera to my devices on the same network without requiring the Internet. I wanted to use old laptops downstairs and in the back yard garage to stream video of the front door. In those locations I will not be able to hear visitors knocking. To my dismay, using browsers to view the video required Adobe Flash. The browsers (Firefox/Chrome) have started trying to not allow Java and Flash so I would’ve expected using HTML5 to view the video, not Flash. Also as I logged into arlo.com via the browser, I got logged out of the phone app and vice-versa. I am one user with one email address but with multiple devices. I expected to be able to use multiple devices simultaneously without requiring multiple email addresses. For what’s specifically being advertised, the Arlo Ultra 4k is a great device. I question some of the engineering designs of the other aspects: Flash vs HTML5, Internet required even though port 80 and 554 is open, 45 second delay at times, and only one device can playback video per email address. If those issues don’t bother you, I say buy it, otherwise maybe something better is out there. Arlo provided me with this product free of charge, but the content and my opinions expressed here are honest and based on my use of the product.

Still needs some attention!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this camera for over a month trying to fall in love with it but, still needs work! I have mine on front porch in full view of street (not a busy street) where it records about 80 images a day and it still misses a lot. I have a $50 camera looking at the same area and it averages 100 recordings a day. I have the sensitvity all the way up, the activity zone is full screen. If the object is within 15 -20ft from the camera it does a great job to pick it up. Beyond 20ft it seems to miss a lot, for instance, the street is 25ft the camera misses picking up white or light colored cars also people walking down the street missing them 90% of the time. My other cheap camera picks up these things everytime! I've had to charge the battery 3 times in a month, advertised to last 3 to 6 months on one charge! I thought with this being HD 4K that I would be able to zoom in and read a license plate or zoom in on a face to get a better picture, nope can't do it! Just as blurry as my cheap one so I'm not sure what good this thing is, I have a nice beatiful shot of my front yard on my phone but it does me no good. I'm so disappointed it does no good for me to say anything else about the other features that are mentioned from the company.

Everything working as advertised
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Could not be happier with this 4 camera set. Replaced a Logitech Alert system which had superb optics but was old tech and failing. The field of view is amazing. I could get away with 3 cameras instead of 6 it is replacing. I would suggest that problems with bandwidth, connectivity, and battery life can be addressed with upgrading to a mesh wifi network, optimum placement of hub (make sure to use the Ultra hub), and setup motion zones correctly. Don't expect to use these looking out a window with the glare introduced. Don't expect to get full 4K without planning ahead. Then you can get amazing results with very little effort. Well worth the price!

Great Security System
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Arlo 4K HDR Security Camera System is great! I know that many will ask, "why would I need a 4k camera for a security system," but I have to say that it is definitely worth it. I have a different wired camera system in my home that is 1080P, and I have had instances where I catch incidents, but when I try to zoom in to capture a license plate number, all I get is blurriness. This is where a 4K system is worth the coin. Another great feature that the Arlo 4K HDR Security Camera System has is the ability to auto-zoom and focus on a moving person. The only drawback to this is that it cannot be used in conjunction with the system set to 4k recording. When I chose 4k recording, the auto-zoom and focus motion would deactivate. You can also speak through the camera. Other incredible feature include a package detection mode, animal, and vehicle detection mode. There is also an e911 feature to help send emergency help at the push of a button. Although I input my address (required to know your location), but looks like there is a glitch in that system, as a different city appears under my location. I'm not sure if Arlo is aware of this, but I hope they will fix it ASAP. As for the setup, it was as simple as setting any other wifi enabled device to your existing network. Just download the Arlo app, follow the instructions to connect to your home network, and you are up and running in no time. The 4k camera is a little bigger than their previous camera models, but that's not an issue for me. I really love this Arlo system, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Buy with confidence.

Clear picture, buggy tracking
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Set up was easy. Most early bugs/issues have been fixed. While the Arlo ultra does well, I don't know if the subscription cost is worth it considering I could pay a subscription fee for other camera systems and view an 5 days of video vs. motion event clips. The motion tracking is still buggy and I ended up turning the feature off. There were too many times the camera zoomed on on a tree branch moving in the wind rather than on a person walking by. In addition, if I cranked up the motion sensitivity the ultra track and zoom feature was still too slow to be useful. I think Arlo has a solid product and customer service. The issue with the ultra is that is held back by the required subscription. Many will find this as a barrier to entry and may end up buying the pro instead. I would not recommend someone upgrade from an arlo pro to the ultra. However, I would recommend the arlo ultra for the homeowner that wants smart home integration and doesn't mind paying extra for all the bells and whistles.

Not Your Grandfather's Security Camera System
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The packaging was first rate. Everything was carefully boxed and arranged so all the components were easily identified. The first thing you notice is how heavy the camera is, and that's before you put the battery in. The hub and it's AC adapter are connected, and you use the included LAN cable to attach it to your router. The Arlo app has to be installed on your phone, and contains the rest of the setup routine. Your phone must be connected to the wifi from the router that you connect the Arlo hub to. You place the battery in the camera and continue with the setup. Setup paused about 5 minutes to install a firmware update on the hub, and then an update on the camera itself. The camera's battery out of the box had 48% of full charge, so I connected the magnetic charger connector cable to it's USB wall charger to bring it to full before actually mounting the camera. It only took an hour or so. The Arlo's base is magnetic and allows the camera to be positioned in various angles while being strongly held to the mount. The battery's remaining charge can be checked from the app on your phone. You can place a high-quality micro-SD card in the base hub, and use it to store videos as well as have them uploaded to the included one-year free subscription to a 30-day "rolling" cloud storage account. It is this account that the phone app is accessing. If your internet fails, the recordings still get stored on the SD card. Great feature--BUT--you have to be home, remove the SD card from the base and view the images on a PC or other devide. Bummer. If a burglar was to cut your house power, even if you have power back-up for the base, you won't be able to describe anything recorded after the internet loss to the cops till you get home! This is odd since competitors' "nanny-cams" have the ability to see what's on the storage card in the home from the phone app. The camera has some cool features that can be turned on at will from the phone--a bright spotlight and a pretty loud siren. Scare away critters or intruders the old-fashioned way! The two-way audio worked well. Very sensitive microphones, best I have tested with a wifi camera. You can use the app and software to store friends' phone numbers, provide them notifications, allow them access to the camera through the Arlo app on their devices, even put a shorcut to a location-providing 911 call. You can also tweak the motion-sensing notifications to tell you if it has seen other things like animals, and a new "package delivered" feature. You can disable various types of motion detection, like screening out birds or pets. It knows when it sees a person or vehicle and tells you in the notification. A skill for Alexa can be enabled to allow you to see the live view from any of the cameras on your Arlo system. Apparently you can add up to 9 more cameras. They aren't cheap. This is not your grandfather's security camera system. The app has utilities for everything from aiming and mounting the cameras to sorting the stored video in the cloud by date, and selecting clips to download, share, or delete. The video and audio are very clear and detailed. Turning on the spotlight during night-time recording allows the images to be saved in color. All in all, a nice system and fairly easy to set up. For this price it should allow you to view what's the SD card from the phone though.

Great little camera, so far
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've only had this camera for about 2 weeks, but so far it's been a great camera. The first night I set it up, it disconnected once, but I have yet to experience another disconnect. I mounted the camera on an outside patio wall and the hub is inside, just on the other side of the wall... so very close. We have professionally installed, hard wired cameras covering other areas outside our home. The patio where we installed this camera is the only side of the house that wasn't covered by video surveillance. It really has given me a piece-of-mind having this area covered. The video this camera provides is excellent. The image is wide and crystal clear. I can really see the high quality when reviewing footage and zooming in on objects. I really like how this camera also has a motion-activate light. Very nice touch. The motion detection is very effective as well. Where we live, we get some pretty gnarly winds and this camera has not provided any false alerts because of trees or plants moving. We've only had one false alert because of a very large moth. It looked very justified to me. I have yet to be able to offer any comments on the quality of the battery except that after 2 weeks, it's currently at 85%. I'm still playing around with the idea of getting the solar panel accessory. Overall, I'm very happy with this camera. We already have an Arlo Q in the house, so it is really nice that I didn't need to install another app for this camera. These days, a plus in my book.

Outstanding image quality and super easy setup
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This camera does not disappoint! First off, the set up is quick and easy breezy, and I am by no means a tech savvy person. Mounted the cameras where I wanted them and fully impressed by the image quality. Super clear images and captures a whole lot of area with the wide angles. Having fun watching my dog mosey around the house when no one is home. The camera itself is sleek and durable. Solid product!
