Quiet speakers and alarm, bad battery life

if cameras are in a place they are activated often the battery only lasts DAYS. No where near the 3-6 months advertised. I can hear everything great from the cameras but no one can hear me. The supposedly loud alarm is quieter than my cellphone. The Doorbell I bought also disappointing bc no one can hear me either. Having spent over $1,000 for this 4k camera system Id expect more. And now I can't return it. Thanks "Best Buy"

We purchased this item twice! The first time we thought it wasn't working right, so we returned it to our local Best Buy. After a few days, we went back to the store to look at other options. The same salesperson helped us (BTW he was very knowledgeable), and we gave it another try. we charged the cameras, and they IMMEDIATELY started to loose power, at that rate, we think we'd have to charge them everyday. The picture was that great either.

At first I was hesitant when looking at the other reviews but I do have to say the quality is what I was after and was not disappointed. Everything else that I want can be solved via updates like access to the SD card from the app and Homekit.

I first read about these being released sometime last year and two things I knew for certain. First, I wanted one and second, I knew it wasn't going to be cheap. I wish I was wrong on the second part, but it’s definitely on the higher end of cameras, but you do get the added benefit of not having to run wires throughout your entire house or wire outlets close to where you want to mount them. This fact should not be discounted. I have another system that required me to climb into my roof space and above my garage to run the wires and I didn't enjoy it in the least. This camera is 4k, provides great two way audio and can be mounted wire-free outdoors. I haven't mounted mine in its permanent location yet primarily because I'm trying to decide on one of two locations. Most likely, I will hardwire this above my garage door and run a new electrical outlet to where the short cord can be in or after checking Best Buy's website, they will soon release a 25' foot outdoor cable that will save me the hassle of running the new box, but cost me a few more bucks. I also hope they release a mount that screws into the back of the camera. Although the magnet is very strong, we have had some strong winds pass through here over the last several months and I'm not completely sure if it will hold up. A silicone sleeve would also be another great option, but I haven't seen one made for this new model yet. The app is what is most disappointing to me. On the main page, there should be a live view of the camera instead of having to tap on the settings menu, then going into the video settings to see the live view. You also cannot use the Auto Zoom & Tracking feature while having Live Streaming turned on. I'm not sure exactly why that is the case, but that is probably something that can be fixed with an update. The audio is crystal clear and has settings for reducing wind noise and you can increase or decrease the speaker volume. Mine is currently set to 35% and its more than enough volume for a two way conversation. You can also set up Activity Zones which is a great feature because you don’t want to get alerts every time a car drives by in full view of the camera because that is annoying and drains your cellphone battery. The light on the camera gives excellent illumination at night and is great as a motion sensor. The Hub has a feature that allows you to arm, disarm, schedule or use geo-fencing. Initially I didn’t see the purpose of this, but I think with the last update it provides a description of each underneath which clarified things for me. Armed, turns motion and audio detection on. Disarmed turns both off. Schedule allows audio and motion on during a certain time which is handy when you have kids playing in the driveway, it turns off notifications. I haven’t used the geo-fencing yet, so I cant speak to the usefulness of that. The other great thing about this camera is that it comes with one year of Arlo Smart Premier. This package covers up to 10 cameras, 30 day playback, e911 and person/package detection. This normally costs $10/month. All in all, this is a great high end camera if you can afford it. I would like to get rid of my current security/video provider but the $300 cost for each additional 4k camera might be a deal breaker for now. I would need at least four cameras so my wife might have a problem with that expenditure. Cost aside, this is a great camera that could be excellent if they tweak the app a bit.

I was excited to get these new cameras. I had the previous 2 models and they worked great. The Ultras? Not so much. They go offline as soon as I go outside. I looked at a lot of posts and several people are having the same problems with no fix yet. I would not recommend buying these.

I upgraded to this from Arlo Pro 2. Cameras suffered from signal drops, not recording complete video, not sending alerts. After 30 days I gave up and went back to my old Arlo system. FYI I’ve got 500mb down/30up so it’s not a internet problem.

I recently upgraded my cameras and found this one to be magnificent!! The night vision is clearly seen unlike the Arlo 2. However you need to make sure your wifi is strong enough to manage these cameras.

This is a very sensitive security system, under the default settings. it seems to record every type of movement in it's field of view. Arlo offers many customization and surveillance features; The ability to talk and listen through the cameras an emergency siren can be activated from your smartphone or computer e911 can be set up to notify 911 with an emergency at your address, or you can notify a friend or neighbor, so they can check on your house. you can set up activity zones from the camera's view to get direct notifications for any movement in just those specific areas. a library of events can either be accessed from the online storage, or a micro SD card(loaded into the camera), to view previous video recordings. all videos record sound as well. You can set up night vision to either include the spotlight, when movement is detected, or just infrared vision. (which has a limited distance, anything over 10 to 15ft, requires the spotlight or an additional light source) color vision doesn't work with the infrared. - in low activity areas the camera's battery can last up to 3 to 6 months. A magnetic base and camera make mounting and positioning a breeze ( lets you angle the camera in virtually any direction) three different camera views are available to accommodate small or large areas - full 120degrees, wide 155degrees, and super wide 180degrees. with advanced dewarping to give you a more natural look. One of the best features is the ability to log into your cameras at anytime to check on your house, with a live video and audio feed. You can also give access to other family members, so they can have their own logins as well. The video quality is pretty good, and any area of the video can be zoomed into for a better look. with all the features, and ease of use, especially the super easy installation of a wireless camera with a magnetic base, and up to 10 cameras. This security system is pretty much perfect for a quick need, or just someone that doesn't want tons of extra wires run all over their house. However, I did notice a few drawbacks after a week and a half of use. The Auto tracking feature is really a nice touch, when their is only 1 subject in view, and a smaller area is being covered by the camera, otherwise when the camera digitally zooms in on the motion, other objects and areas are cut out of the view. So, if you are covering a large area, turn off the auto tracking, so you don't lose potentially important background footage. Also, make sure that you don't position your camera where there is a lot of objects that will constantly be waving around in the wind. My camera was recording clips every minute, because of part of an awning flapping in the wind. When I placed a camera in front of my house, I was amazed at how incredible the 180 degree field of view was, the 1 camera was able to cover virtually all of my front yard. I set up 2 activity zones, 1 for my lawn, and 1 for my driveway (on the same camera) the zones worked great, as I got notified anytime movement was detected in those zones, however they should also offer an "ignore" zone, because when I went back and viewed all my recorded video clips, the camera had captured every vehicle that was going down my street. I didn't get notifications for these recording, which was good, because it was not in my designated zones, but it wore my camera battery down very quickly. I had to charge my camera after one and a half weeks of such intense use. I was also a little disappointed that the infrared night vision, only worked with such a small distance, but that can be easily rectified by using the built in spotlight, or other lights around your house It's also a good idea to order extra batteries and a charging base, so that when you get the notification for a low battery, it can be changed quickly, and the camera can be immediately returned to service , or get the solar charging unit for even less maintenance. overall, I'm pretty impressed with the system, and it's features. I just really hope they include a "non-activity" or "ignore zone", to weed out unnecessary recordings, and also a minimum time recording feature for detected motions. I noticed that in some of my recordings, I would have liked it to have recorded another 5 or 10 seconds after the last motion was detected. Both of these suggestions could easily be added in a system update, and really improve the battery life and motion captures.

I am an Arlo fan, having had the Arlo Pro indoor camera system for several years with excellent results. There were never any issues with the system, and it’s still in great working order. The new Arlo Ultra has many new and desirable features, including the addition of outdoor use. Like the Pro system, initial set up and connection to my Wi-Fi network was quick and easy. After that, there were some issues with the Ultra setup in getting the system working properly. THE GOOD: Features include 4K Video HDR, color night vision with an integrated adjustable spotlight, 1800 viewing, 2-way audio, and is weather resistant making it great for outdoor operation. Operational time on a fully charged battery is amazing, which is especially important for outdoor usage (an optional solar charger is available). When a battery needs a charge, it will let you know. The charger is really neat, because it connects to the camera magnetically, so no more having to remove the battery for a charge...a great improvement over earlier cameras! Included is a free year of Arlo Smart service with cloud recording. If you wish to retain the service after that, the annual fee varies according to the number of cameras you have in use. The Ultra can handle up to 10. Within the Settings, you can fine tune the audio/video operations to suit your particular needs, including but not limited to: 1. Varying notifications for people, animals, and vehicles. 2. Creation of activity zones. 3. An “e911” setting for handling emergencies, even if you are not home. THE NOT SO GOOD: Whereas the Arlo Pro was essentially plug and play, this new model is not. There are no instructions regarding anything other than connecting to Wi-Fi, not uncommon these days, but even some minimum regarding essential steps would be very helpful. Information may be obtained by going online. Fortunately, with my prior experience with the Pro, I at least had a clue. For someone without that knowledge, it could be an even bigger challenge. A number of tweaks are needed to adjust the operation to your own needs, and they can be tricky. Finding information in “Settings” in the app for a given setting can be confusing. Night vision is not really in color, unless the camera light comes on. Getting it to come on when motion was detected took a bit of work. Initially, there were issues with the camera link to the base failing, especially when the camera was moved. With a reboot, after a couple of days of use that seems to have been fixed. Also, the two-way audio feature needs improvement regarding volume and feedback issues. Perhaps a software tweak by Arlo would be in order. The bottom line is that Arlo’s new VMS5140 is a very nice step up from older models, and it is not without issues (probably fixable) that keep it from being a 5 star item. With the caveats, I would recommend this system.
