Works great - even from the garage

I have to say I have been pretty pleased with this product. In an open concept floor plan the fewer components you have the less you have to worry about wires being strung around everywhere. Due to the way my local cable/phone company runs their system I wasn't able to put this near my TV/Computer where internet connection would be used so I actually have this unit in the garage and even placed in the garage I have a minimum of 3 bars on my wifi at the farthest point of my house (great room) from the garage. Excellent buy for me.

    Great Modem and Router Combo

I originally purchased my first Motorola SURFboard 6580 from Amazon a little over a year ago and the manufacturer warranty expired and quit working. I however was able to get my money back from Amazon for the Router/Modem and that made me extremely happy. I purchased my second one from Best Buy and got a 2 year replacement warranty for $20.00 and have peace of mind I can return it if doesn't last 1 or 2 years from now. I am happy with the easy set up and it's almost the same one that I got from Comcast/XFINITY that I was going to rent from them at $7 a month. I have never had any problems other than it only lasted a little past the warranty.

    Awful Product

This modem worked for approximately 5 minutes. I installed it, had it registered with Cox Communications, they said there was a very strong signal going to the device so I shouldn't have any problems. I went to speedtest.net and had great results. About two minutes later the connection dropped, I couldn't connect devices via the Wireless router even though they were detecting the SSID and the signal was strong. My laptop would not connect even when directly connected. I took it back to the Bestbuy and exchanged it for another one. Same issue. After calling Cox the second time, I asked the IT person on the phone if they were receiving many complaints about this modem. He stated they have been getting a lot of calls and recommended that I get the SB6120 instead. I followed his advice and got the 6120 and a Netgear N300 Wireless router. AWESOME. Installation went smoothly and I have not had the connection drop yet! The speedtest.net results were absolutely amazing. Keep in mind that Im paying for 15 Mbps. Upon running the speedtest.net, I received 44Mbps Down and 9Mbps Up!!!! Wireless received 36 Mbps down and 7 Mbps up!. I recommend NOT getting this product. Buy the SB6120 and a wireless router of your choice instead.

    Ethernet connection works; wifi doesn't

Although I read many great reviews before purchasing this modem/router, I have to say that I have been completely disappointed with the product. Almost every morning when I get ready to use any wirelessly connected device, I have to reset this modem/router. This is a supreme pain because when I go out of town and I can't reset it, I can no longer connect to my Tivo. I was blaming the internet provider and harassing them about poor service, but I soon realized that the Ethernet connected devices work, so it's not the internet provider's service, it's this sorry router. Do yourself a favor and do NOT buy it!

    Ok, most of the time

I like the overall functionality of having everything in one box. However, this unit runs super hot and if you work it too hard, you'll overheat it and have to reset the device. It used to be on my network board, which is well ventilated and cooled - however this device runs so hot that i had to separate it out from the other networking gear in my house. It sits alone and still requires occasional resets after a while. If you're a casual user of the internet, this is probably a good device for you. If you're a power user - you might want to consider something different.

    Great item because it's a modem/router combo.

Having a modem/router combo is nice. It's just one less thing to worry about. And with changing technology, I feel this product will great for a long time. It has alot of options. Ijust haven't experimented with the "N" series mode as far as the 20mhz or 40mhz, and if using 40mhz determining if upper or lower channels work better with the primary set at 6. Will experiment later. But still I'm very pleased with this product!

    Good while it lasts

Have owned this going on about 3 years now. It is relatively easy to setup and use. Signal strength is good for a mid sized home, with little interface. Though recently there have been constant disconnects from both wired and wireless. power cycling the router provides stability for about a day, then back to the disconnects again, or wired will be fine and wireless is unavailable. The last Motorola modem I bought lasted 8 years, so seeing a failure so soon is disappointing. Could be a fluke and I got a bad unit. Beyond the recent troubles, it was what you would expect from a wireless gateway, nothing too fancy.

Modem-Router not so good after all

This router keeps locking up wireless ,disconnects and drops the internet connection, many error codes. Laptop is in the other room literally 10 feet away. Have to keep rebooting it every day to get it to work. I have 120mbs on non wireless. Wireless works for about 2 or 3 hours and then drops down to 4 mbs. I would not get this again

Needs work, not great for gaming.

I bought this modem with good intentions despite the bad reviews but good intentions weren't enough to help this product. The fist week I had this modem was great nothing bad, except the N signal was weak. The N signal is as good as the B/G signal. The next week I upgraded to Comcasts Extreme 50 and It started losing signal than i had to restart the modem. At night when my Brother was playing games it lost it's signal. His gaming hadn't improved from the speed either I kept checking in on him to ask about lag and if their was a difference, there was none. I thought Switching my modem to a static ip addressing might work but, it wasn't any help. I also tried switching to B signal only but it kept reverting to a B/G signal or N. Hopefully when motorola gives the product a firmware update it will work better.

    Good, BUT...

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The biggest problem with this modem is that it ships out with the extremely buggy 3.1 firmware, and you are entirely dependent on your cable company to upgrade it. Most cable companies will not tell you what the update cycle is so you are stuck with the poor performance of this unit as is.... Download speed is good, BUT ping time, latency, and packet loss is unacceptable (rated an F on pingtest.net)... Get a different one... stay away from the 6580...

    Wireless randomly fails

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Wireless keeps failing on the device; I have to reboot it several times a week. Took 5 calls to Arris to get them to replace the device instead of trying to blame it on the cable company or interference. Getting this replaced by warranty either requires sending in the device and being without the Internet for a week or more, or being charged a service fee to have them mail one back first. Not happy with this policy; I shouldn't have to pay an extra fee to get a working product when this is under warranty.

    DO NOT BUY

This item seemed like a great idea. Combined cable modem and wireless router. Out of the box things are great. Setup is average. After setup nothing but a nightmare. Some problems were minor advanced setting changes and solveable after doing some online research. The major problem is loss of signal and communication between wireless devices. Read the reviews. This is a recurring issue. Unfortunately there are no fixes. Motorola WILL NOT upgrade the firmware saying that only the cable provider can push updates to the device. My Cable Provider has no intentions of providing firmware updates since its not a modem provided by them. Point is "DO NOT BUY" due to the connectivity issues and there not being any future fixes.

I was very unsure about buying because of the bad reviews, but after talking to motorola I thought I would give it a try. I wanted the most current technology and this is it. I plugged it in and sync everything and so far (have had it for over a month) it has worked perfectly.

    DROPS WIFI SIGNAL

I had to return this unit, due to a constant drop off from the WiFi signal. I ended up purchasing the Surfboard SB6183 and the TP-LINK Archer C5 AC1200 , whole new level of greatness. Do yourself a favor and spend the additional cost. Its worth it.
