I originally purchased the modem without the wireless. Ended up returning it and getting this modem. I had a problem hooking up my old wireless router to the first modem.

I bought this for my lady and I didn't really know how it was going to work. The truth is that I was amazed at how easy it was to set up and how blazing fast her internet is now. Let me point out she has comcast Cable. Get it

Very expensive for what I needed. I did want something though that had wireless connection so I could use with TV, I phone, etc. so I was willing to pay extra. The initial setup was pretty easy. But when I had a question or problem and called motorola they want $20 or $30 to answer your question. They have an online account that links to your router. When in they requested you back up the info in case you get locked out. I did that. But then once saved I still was not able to get back in to adjust. So I have not been wifi connected since installation. I am connected via wire. It says I may be able to reboot / reset but I have not tried that yet.

Installs in minutes, gets the advertised performance and has a decent wifi radio. Good security options. Why is it 3x the price of a comparable non-Motorola router?

Product Failure - Moto does not care

Takes a little doing to get TimeWarnerCable's system to recognize this unit and it is on their approved list. Needed second level tech support. Eventually both modem and router components worked great. For a few months. Then the modem frequently disconnected and the restart of it plus the PC happened more and more. A TWC home-visit tech was generous enough to add their modem/router in parallel. After two weeks theirs never failed by the Surfboard kept failing. So it WAS the Surfboard and not TWC. My independent tech support company talked with Moto and returned the unit. Moto took no responsibility for the unit...not even as a courtesy. They sent back the bad unit and I tossed it into the trash. Hate to pay TWC $6/mo for their modem (modem only) but theirs works perfectly. HOWEVER, I did buy a router so as not to pay the EXTRA $12/mo for their wifi. Yes, $12/mo just for the wifi. And a good separate router from BestBuy offers better range throughout the house than either the Surfboard or the TWC unit. So the problem is NOT with BestBuy. It i with Moto's lack of customer support.

    Poor Performance

I bought this router in May 2011 because it was the highest rater router recommended by Comcast. I run a tech-heavy household with a home office, networked printer, six regularly connected computers, xBox, and internet cable TV's. Subscribed to Comcast's most robust home use package (may need to upgrade to business class) and installed the router with ease. WWII construction means I have thick walls so although I was disappointed at having to add range extenders, I was also understanding. Overall this modem is slow to connect and the way it handles Comcast's bursting (annoying in and of itself) means that webpages DNS error out anyway. But I now think the modem exacerbates the problem. But worse, it not only drops pages on each machine, It has dropped its connection to the net and required a reboot several times a month since I got it. That was tolerable until recently when it began occurring several times a day. Or my other new favorite behavior - spontaneous reboot (without reconnecting to the 'net.) Previously I'd been a Cisco person and it looks like I'll be headed back that direction. Two thumbs down for Motorola.

Broke After 2 Months Motorola Wont Honor Warrenty

This router quite working after literally less than 2 months of use. It was horrible experience the whole two months then it finally gave out. The company refused to refund or replace the item. They also refused to give any solid reasoning as to why. I would recommend a Zoom Modem and an Apple airport Express/Extreme/Time Capsule as a much more powerful long lasting setup. I will not deal with Motorola products ever again.

I had to replace a cable modem Comcast said was too old and wouldn't work anymore. I figured it would be nice to have the modem and router all in one unit so I went with this one. It was simple to set up and get online, but that's where the part ends. The wireless on this thing is really flaky. When my pcs come out of sleep mode every other router I've used reconnects immediately. This one connects for a second, then disconnects and takes another one to five minutes to reconnect. That was just one issues. A week after I got it, I started having issues with losing the internet. I figured I had brand new hardware so it must be on Comcast's end. After numerous phone calls Comcast got a tech out to me 10 days later and found no problems with my cable. They determined the new modem was at fault. So today I boxed it up to return it and was told that I can't because I've had it for more than 15 days. Had I known their product was faulty I would have returned it much sooner, but I assumed that it was brand new and functioning properly and the problem was on Comcast's end. So now I've purchased another new modem and router and I'm sitting here out $143 and change because Best Buy won't take back a defective item. Not pleased.

The modem was a real royal pain to setup. The local ISP server could not get the modem to work at all with their network. All the perninent address and information were provided, but their network was not able link or "see" my IP address. The wireless network router portion was a neat idea!!! I had to call the tech support, and they were able to help greatly. Overall, I could not get the thing work with the internet, and had to return it the store, and get my money back!!!!

I built a brand new house. I had Cox install all brand new lines. This Modem runs great when working but just like all the complaints, it drops throughout the day if your cable provider isn't strong enough. Motorola confirmed that other brands are more "tolerant" than their model which will drop the signal to search for a better one if its not running at 37-47 signals. Cox was running at 51. Basically, try the modem and if it works for you great! If not, just get another brand. This is what their own tech guy told me.

This thing is a Piece of JUNK using an ethernet cable it works fine but the Wi-Fi is completely USELESS it says connected then as soon as you open Chrome or Internet Explorer web browser the Wi-Fi turns itself OFF and says limited NO INTERNET CONNECTION. Tech Support is useless from Arris so I will be returning it ASAP and getting a separate Docsis 3.0 modem and Router and I will NEVER again buy another Motorola product ever again nor will I recommend one. Motorola use to make good products now they are JUNK!!!

I'm no stranger to networking. I bought this unit for my home when my Linksys WRT160 Router gave up on me after about 7 years. I thought it would be nice to have an "all in one" unit providing my needs. The wireless part of this unit is useless for me. In 5 days it disconnected wireless components 3 times, having to "reset" it to get them back online. Even when it did work, I only got about 1mbps on downloads (out of 15) and barely anything on uploads. Also, the range sucks too, much less than the Linksys router I had before. I went back to my old modem and another Linksys WRT160 and all is good now.

Purchased SBG6580 modem on 2/18/12. Wireless connectivity issues immediately. Motorola technical support helpful and resolved problem. But, now I'm having problems changing the factory default password. Motorola charges $30 for what they term "advance technical support." They do have chat for technical support but they are closed on weekends. I tried to email my issue but that didn't work either. Searched the Internet for help. Got some suggestions but none worked. I just want to change the default password. I followed instructions to the letter. How hard can this be? I cannot recommend this product at this time. If changing a factory default password takes this much effort, I'm afraid of what something more complex would involve.

This is the worse gateway I have ever had

This particular cable modem is the worse gateway I have ever had. Before I bought this gateway at the Best Buy store, I came here to check out the reviews. I saw a lot of negative reviews but they did not outnumber or come close to the positive reviews. So, I took a chance. When I got the first one, I noticed my connection kept getting dropped, to the tune of every 10-15 mins. At first, I thought it was my laptop going bad. However, this behavior was happening on my cell phone when it was connected to the modem, my Kindle Fire, and my iPod. So, I returned it to Best Buy thinking I might have gotten a defective one. (Hey it happens sometimes) So, I bought the new gateway home and bam same behavior! But here is the kicker! For some reason, I couldn't connect to cox.com. (my internet provider/cable company) I thought that was really weird so I called Cox up to see if maybe their website was down. The technician said the site was up. She had me do a wired connection to this gateway instead of doing wireless. I was able to connect to the site. She suggested I call Motorola. I did and long of the short, the guy from Motorola told me it was my laptop. I was literally floored. Old gateway... I didn't have this trouble. When my Kindle Fire, cell phone (Galaxy S4), and iPod is connected to this gateway wirelessly they all have the same issue trying to connect to cox.com, BUT it was my laptop that was defective???? Not the gateway??? So I returned the gateway again and got a different one. Two NetGs this time. After all of the gateways I have ever had, I have to say this is the worse one. So I thought I would post this review to hopefully warn anyone else who is thinking about spending their money and time on this gateway. Don't!!! Go buy a different one, even if it is a little more expensive.
