Not a good Wifi router! Limited connection range

My internet keeps dropping constantly every few minutes even when I am in the same room, only a few feet away from the modem. For the price, it certainly is not doing its job right. It's weird because other customers seem to have been giving lots of positive feedback for this model. I switched to a different modem/brand for the same price and it works much better. I'm glad I figure out that the issue lies in the arris modem before I made any changes to my laptop.

Trust the negative reviews - Do NOT buy this

I'm normally a skeptic when it comes to negative reviews, mainly because I've bought products with bad reviews, and they turn out to be pretty good products. NOT SO HERE... I bought this to replace an old DOCSIS 1.0 modem since I just upgraded my speed on my Suddenlink account. I also wanted to do away with 2 pieces of equipment (modem AND wifi-router). It seemed that everything I would plug into the switch ports on the back of every wifi router I tried gave nasty RFI on my ham radio equipment. This still gives RFI. But, that's not why I'm dissatisfied. THE WiFi IS TERRIBLE! If you get more than 20ft away from the device, your speed drops around %50. If I walked into the bedroom, the download speeds would drop from 15mb to around 6-7mb. I tested out pings with my iPhone. While in front of the modem, ping times were around 6-14ms. Walking 30ft into the bedroom, the pings shot up to +50ms, and began dropping replies. I tried this 3-4 times, and same ever time. If you drop even one bar in signal strength on the wifi indicator on either the laptop or iPhone, the speeds drop, and the lag kicks in. I put the device into it's pseudo-bridged mode, hooked up the wifi-router I was using, and it's a night/day difference. Same iPhone, same app, pings were constantly down around 4-11ms from in front of the router to all the way to the furthest point in my house, with absolutely NO dropped pings and no noticeable speed decrease in downloads.. I'll give the modem this. It's faster than my old docsis 1.0 modem. That's about the only good thing. Save your money, get a good wifi-router and a simple docsis 3.0 modem. This is NOT an answer to our needs of getting rid of network components. My other gripes are that the configuration interface is clunky; nothing seems to be where it needs to be, and trying to get the stupid thing to get into it's "bridge mode" took nearly 30 minutes and multiple resets of both the modem and wifi-router. It's nothing a noobie is going to be able to figure out. I REPEAT! Do NOT buy this! You can spend less money buying a simple DOCSIS 3.0 modem and inexpensive wifi-router and get much better wifi performance.

    Don't do it!

They want you to spend more money to fix there problem. In other words you can't have this device and another router in your house because there will be a conflict with each other. This modem/router worked fine at first and now has to be reset almost everyday. I didn't spend the extra money for this hassle, but now that the Best buy return period is past and Motorola won't exchange it for one that works properly , I'm stuck with this junk!

I have been using this device for several weeks now with NO issues whatsoever. I have excellent signal strength nearly throughout our home. The fact that it is a combined modem and multi port wireless router made it that much more attactive to me.

I purchased this cable modem and installed cable modem and it fine working. It is very faster speed download and upload. Wireless network works fine with my printer. There no problem cable modem. I don’t like Linksys E2000, E3000 and E4200 because too many problems. I am happy with Motorola SBG6580 cable modem 

I've had this modem/router for over 6 months now. It constantly disconnects and drops the internet connection. I have no problems with my devices, other than when in my house. So frustrating to constantly reconnect and/or reboot it. Go with Netgear.

    Do Not Buy!!

I bought this item for my new home. The sales representatives said it would suffice my home. It would work in a three story home. They apparently do not own a home or just got hired for their good looks because it has been the worse modem I have ever purchased. I am returning it tomorrow because it has not met any of my family needs as far as a modem should.

I have had two of these. After a few months they both stopped working properly. I have to reboot them constantly and they usually require multiple reboots before they start working again. Motorola Customer Service reps are horrible as well. Overall, if I could give this a zero I would!!!

This unit is great. The only thing I would like to point out is the fact that the owners manual is on the accompanying disc. I suggest that you print and save this to your computer. Be sure to change the preset password prior to connecting to the internet following the manual's instructions.

Warning - Do Not Buy - $30 Customer Service Charge

Product came with wrong documentation. When I contacted Motorola/Arris to help me resolve why I couldn't setup my own wifi network they tried to charge me a $30 fee. Took me 2 hours to find another older setup guide that had the products correct password. Shameful customer service by the manufacture. I will never buy from Motorola/Arris again.

Simple plug and play. Must use their code which is really long and nobody will guess for sure. I had it on for weeks without turning off. No problems. I have two floors and get good signals throughout the house. Good buy.

    Good and Bad

If you are looking for a modem/router that you will be plugging directly into with an Ethernet cable, then no complaints and it works great. However, if you are trying to set up a wireless network in your home, there are better options. Doing minor things like email or Facebook usually work just fine, but do not try to play games online with this. Any online computer games will lag and there is very little you can do about it. My Xbox 360 works fine, but any MMO's or other slightly intensive games will lag out considerably unless you are directly plugged into the modem. Best advice I can give is to get a modem and a router separate if you are looking to play games online, and not this product.

Worked great until Comcast pushed a patch.

This modem was very easy to setup and use. Firmware is updated by your ISP for most modems. Comcast pushed a firmware update that broke this modem. Once pushed it would disconnect every 5-10min or so and take about 20min to come back online. I returned it and purchased a NetGear router instead. Used a cheap modem from Comcast, the combination works great.

    Useless for wireless

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

A first class modem and lightning-fast ethernet router (for PC and Xbox 360), this unit is let down by an extremely weak wi-fi transceiver. I don't know how Motorola could have got it so wrong. 10 feet away from the unit and 3 laptops (HP, Dell and Sony) all got at best (AT BEST !!) 1 bar signal strength. After dropping the laptops of the next work 4 or 5 times an hour all of the first day we had it, the unit was returned, as defective, to Best Buy the very next morning. Fortunately, the store made no quibble about this. Instead, we picked up the rock-solid Motorola SB6120 Modem (the same modem as in this gateway unit) and a Netgear WNR3500L RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Router. The new combination was dead easy to install (plus you get to choose your own WPA2 security key) and we get a 4 bar Wi-Fi signal at the furthest-away point in the house. The Wi-Fi data transfer rate is excellent for sending/receiving HD video and the ethernet connection for Xbox Live is blisteringly fast, with no detectable lag and no drop-off the network during the 6 hours we were logged on.

THIS IS THE WORST WIRELESS MODEM!!!!

    Posted .

I got this from Time warner as a lease, and we finally got the ability to use DOCSIS 3.0 speeds in my area, I was really excited but when I tried to do a pingtest on Speedtest.net I kept loosing Packets, so I figured it out, the firewall settings on this will cause you to have drops in speed especially while playing games, so I went into the Modem settings and it was the IP Flood Detection when it was enabled it really caused you to have alot of drops, I wasn't sure if this was safe to turn off so I left it off anyways, but I went and purchased the Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem, I just got it today so we will see, but I also have a Netgear WNDR3700 Router and I am gonna test both together with the one I just got and I will post an update soon on the outcome, but DONT BUY the SBG6580 model HORRIBLE!!!!. I hope they fix this problem in a future firmware update. Update!!!!! I just got the new Modem and it's AWESOME!!!! no drops, I recommend the SB6120 model

    Waste of time and energy

I read the reviews, and since the overwhelming majority warned against this modem, I was leary about buying it. But I wanted to try and save a few bucks buy owning a modem instead of leasing from Comcast, and I wanted one part, instead of a modem and router. Well let me tell you, this thing is going back to BestBuy today. At first I was impressed. Set up was easy, the wizard did it all for me with relative ease and had me up and running with Comcast Xfinity in no time. I set up a wireless network for two computers in the same room as modem within 10 ft of it. All was good until it was up and "running". Within two hours, my wireless connections became intermittent connections, on and off. Surfing was a nightmare and pages loaded about 50% of the time. When it does work, it's not as fast as advertised. Direct cable to the old modem was very fast ...this is snail pace, that is when there's a connection. Hope this helps, if you do buy, I'm afraind you'll be disappointed.
