The A50 gen 4 represent a super premium headset from Astro. Astro, now owned by Logitech, is a company that has focused on top tier gaming headsets since its inception. The A50 line represents top notch audio in a wireless package that doesn’t disappoint. What blew me away about this headset day one was the connectivity. You get a base station that gently magnetically connects to the headset. It displays charge level (4 LEDs), dolby on, device mode (Xbox/PC) and which preset EQ is currently in use (of 3 you can store on the headset). The base station passes through optical audio and gets power from USB. That means if you already use optical to connect your home theater system or sound bar, you can pass this signal through uninterrupted. There is even a USB charge port in case you want to complain about losing a USB port to this headset setup. There is an Aux in/Mic that can mix in another audio source as well, but I did not use that functionality. In PC mode, which is swapped to using the switch located on the back, you can use either the optical audio or USB. Astro’s setup videos will tell you to just use USB for PC. I did use both USB and optical audio and confirm they both work well. You lose the mixing when using optical audio for the PC, but otherwise it does a great job. Hooking both up seems to have no downsides for me, as I can easily switch output devices, and avoid the ‘hear yourself speak’ feature on the USB channel. I did the initial firmware update via PC, and it worked flawlessly. The Astro Command Center software is available in the Microsoft Store, and appears to be the same software on both the Xbox and PC. Microsoft’s convergence of Xbox and Windows 10 pays off here. Another cool thing about the Xbox One version is that it includes 2 years of Dolby Atmos for Headphones. This isn’t limited to use on just the Astro headset, so if you have other headphones, they too can make use of this benefit on both the Xbox and Windows 10. Of course whether or not the Atmos audio processor makes a huge difference is up to the listener. I found it did add spatial awareness in certain circumstances, but especially with the Astro’s I felt like the biggest differences were experienced through the Dolby button and built in equalizers. Audio really is top notch here. The drivers deliver crisp highs, rumble your head lows, and outstanding definition. There is a decent sound stage given the over the ear layout. Music was sublime, and cinematic scenes could get almost uncomfortably intense when cranked up. Volume level was more than sufficient. Games felt pretty immersive. While these are 7.1 Dolby headphones, there are only two 40mm drivers here. These are good drivers however, and their ability to render spatial surround sound was not bad at all. I do think that individual channel volume should be available if mixing surround passthrough, as the center channel could be louder in my opinion, but overall the effect is impressive. What I love about the Astro A50’s is the built in settings. You can tweak your built-in EQs to your heart’s content, then push it to the device’s storage. This means you can setup a AAA/Movie EQ, competitive shooter EQ, and music EQ and flip between them with a touch of the lower button. I found the ‘Astro’ EQ to be a great cinematic and immersive EQ, even if it lent itself a touch to the dramatic. Flipping to the studio or flat EQs cleared up some overshooting of the bass and treble. The fact you can quickly and effectively switch them is a game changer for me. Sometimes I really like that boomy powerful EQ, but oftentimes I like to swap back to something reference sounding if listening to music. Rounding out the on headset functionality, the headset offers two volume controls. One is master volume, found on the right ear cup as a small volume rotator. This is in the same place as my trusty old G930 from logitech, so I found it super easy to work with. The other volume is one that adjusts the in game audio chat volume. You adjust this by clicking the front or back side of the right ear cup. I avoid in game chat a lot, but it’s nice to be able to minimize the noise on certain games. There are also lots of little design touches here that clearly indicate this is a generation 4 of this series. The headset turns off when placed on a table on its side after about 20-30 seconds. It quickly wakes up when moved. I left it on my computer desk for a day after using it for an hour, and there was no impact on the battery. If you’re lazy like me, this is a god-send. The microphone sports a common, but not always a given feature of muting it when flipped up. The microphone was loud and clear to anyone that I asked. From recording that I heard it seemed to pick up lots of details without getting too much background noise. Of course I’m not using this in a loud environment, so take that for what you will. The headphones themselves are not super light, but not super heavy weighing in at 370 grams. The earcups and headband are replaceable and customizable. The earcups especially can go through some major wear and tear, so to see easily replaced magnetic earcups is awesome. The earcups are covered in a soft fabric material that breathes nicely. The build quality is amazing too. The Astro’s take an understated but decisively gamer aesthetic here, with lots of semi-floating layers and thick metered height adjustment rails. Styling here is a bit more symmetrical and understated than the 3rd generation they replace. The earcups rotate to sit flat on a desk. Plastics here are either a soft touch or high gloss depending on the location. This difference in materials can be helpful for your hands locating the proper function. Best of all, there is no RGB, which on most gaming hardware I’m a fan of. If those blinky lights are on your head, that seems at best useless, and at worst a distraction. Wireless performance is excellent. I haven’t had a single drop out or stutter in 30+ hours of use so far. Battery life seems quite good as well. I don’t put these through the same all day run throughs I do my work headphones, but the rated 15h seems about right. I find charging them so effortless and easy with the base that they haven’t even seen the downside of 50%. Of course the price of admission here warrants the high quality features/functions. At $299 Astro A50’s find themselves in rarified air and looking at prices of previous generation headsets show they don’t go on sale often. Of course if you’re an audiophile and gamer, you need to try these, as I doubt you’ll find anything that sounds this good both wireless and with gamer features/integrations. I do want to emphasize that they’d easily compete in the $200 wired or wireless headphone market. If you primarily use an Xbox for gaming, then this headset is probably worth the investment. PC gamers get just as much benefit, but need to weigh this into their budget. Of course if you value audio and want an immersive setup, the Astro A50’s make a very compelling case.
