THE headset to beat
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Today i am reviewing the new Astro A50 with base station for the Ps4. I have used several different headsets in the past all primarily with ps4. Astro makes great products, they have been in the headset game for a long time and the new A50 is another example of one of their top tier gaming headsets. It has a boatload of features, some I don’t fully understand, but I’m sure people who have more experience with sound mixing would really appreciate. I will be breaking the review down into several parts and giving each section its own star rating out of 5: Build quality/comfort, sound quality, user friendliness, and extra features/software. Build Quality and comfort: 4/5 This is a really well made headset, from the minute you open the package everything is sleek, sturdy, and all around pleasing to look at. It is made of a hard plastic that doesn’t feel in any way that it may crack or creak when moved around. The ear pads are made from a soft foam and are very comfortable. They provide plenty of space around the ear so as not to feel like your ears are being smushed after several hours of use. The A50 ear pieces also slide up and down on a metal rod which actually has a sort of ruler etched into it so you can more precisely level both sides which I found to be a nice addition. The only part I didn’t love was the top foam piece that rests on the top of your head. This is not a light headset by any means, which is fine, but the foam piece is a little small and doesn’t distribute the weight over a large enough area. So after maybe an hour and a half, my head didn’t necessarily hurt, but you could definitely feel where the pressure has been. The bungie like head strap on other headsets has been the most comfortable, and I would have liked to have seen that used on this headset as well. Sound Quality: 5/5 This is what you are paying for with this headset! It is amazing how accurate and in depth the sound is on the A50. The RF base station connects to the ps4 through the optical port on the back which provides a much cleaner sound than with a traditional usb or auxiliary connection. Those of you who know a thing or two about sound mixing with really enjoy the software that can be downloaded for mac or pc. There are several different presets you can choose from such as a media preset, studio preset, or something they call Astro and Pro presets. I have preferred the Astro setting as it seems to be most tuned for gaming which is what I use it for (obviously). You can also adjust mic sensitivity, side tone volume, Noise gate setting (I’ll explain shortly because I had no clue what that was), and game to voice chat ratios. I personally don’t like hearing my own voice played back into my ear, so I muted the side tone. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to get rid of it no matter how much I tried so I can still hear myself talking, and more annoyingly, hear myself breathing. This can be remedied slightly simply by moving your mic farther away and then playing with the noise gate setting. I’m getting used to it now but just know that it can’t be completely taken out. The noise gate basically refers to how loud the sound needs to be in order for the mic to pick it up. There is a night setting that allows you to talk very quietly, but if you have even a fan on somewhere nearby your friends will probably tell you they can hear it. The max noise gate setting is called tournament, which drowns out all ambient noise but requires you to talk much louder in order to be heard. I use the middle setting which has been good for me talking medium volume with a fan running next to me, my friends don’t seem to be able to hear the extra noise as long as the wind isn’t blowing straight into the mic. I’m still giving sound 5 stars because some of the things I mentioned are just preferences, and when it comes down to it, this is the best sounding headset I have ever used by a long shot. It is easy to tell where enemies are whether they are above or below you, it is very accurate and crisp. User Friendliness: 5/5 It is super simple to use and all of the buttons are in a great location when you are wearing the A50. Flipping up the mic mutes it which is pretty common now for top of the line headsets, but it is something other headsets used a button for, and the flip feature is just easier and, in my opinion, a better way to mute. The right side of the headset has the master volume scroll wheel, a selector for the 3 customizable sound modes, and a dolby surround switch. I honestly have not been able to tell much of a difference with the dolby mode on or off, it may be more noticeable while watching a video but either mode seemed to be fine. All in all, it is super easy to use while wearing, and the fact that it charges automatically when I dock, saves me from frustratingly searching for cords when getting a low battery beep mid game. Software and features: 5/5 The program you use to change all the tiny details of the A50 is very streamlined. You can save different sound presets all within the program, and change them with a click of a button. It will save all changes made until the next time you plug it back into your computer. The software also automatically searches for updates for both the program and the firmware of the headset itself, making sure you stay up to date on all new changes they may make. I haven’t delved much into accessories for the headset, but I do know they have mix amps that you can get to further play with the sound settings. You can also get individual pieces for the headset if something goes wrong such as just a replacement ear foam cover or mic boom. In the end, if you are a serious gamer, with a little room in your budget, this is the high-end headset to beat right now. While I think the head strap could be slightly more comfortable, and i don’t like the side tone to where I can hear myself. Those are more just preferences of what I am used to. This is a super solid headset with immersive, incredible sound, and loads of customization options to really make it your own.

Astro A50 (Gen 4)
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had used this head set for a couple of weeks now and I have to say they are one of the best on the market. The sound is great being able to balance game chat vs game sound. The new integration of Astro Audio V2 and Dolby Atmos set me into a new sound environment that I have not experienced before. It was pretty awesome. The headset itself is pretty comfortable, sturdy and surprisingly not heavy. Great for wearing for long periods of time. The ear cups made of a cloth material and are magnetically attached to the frame for easy removal. Buttons and dials on the head set are easy to locate and used for sound presets and sound adjustment. The boom mic is flip style that mutes it in the up position (I'm not a fan of this). The over all rechargeable battery life is about 15 hours. You will have to put them on the Command Center to recharge them but be careful not to yank them off the base because they are attached magnetically and you could possibly lift the base from the surface. Overall, I think this is a great wireless gaming set for my needs. A little pricey though. I didn't not have it hooked up to a computer to use other than to download the firmware where I had to program my presets for the headset.

Overall 6 year review
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had the Astro A50 Gen 4 since its release in 2019 and I can definitely say I have never encountered a problem with the self-turn-off. However, some problems I have encountered over the years are slim. 1. Sometimes they will randomly not want to play audio, and the fix to that is just turning them off place on the base station unplugging them plugging them in, and turning them back on; that usually fixes it... if not you have to reset them with a button or something i can't remember been a while. 2. The other problem that I have is that the battery life has decreased quiet a lot as off just recently and is very annoying. I haven't tested how much it depleted but it definitely isn't the 15 hrs or something they claim... but id still say thats pretty decent for 5 almost 6 years. For the good, the audio is great as well as the comfort I'd highly recommend the leather ear cup kit... makes them way more comfortable. The Sourond sound is pretty good I feel like with the Dolby Atmos app it could definitely bring out better audio but then you have to pay even more for a $300 pair of headphones.
