I was researching laptops for a few weeks when I came across this one. I needed an optical drive and web cam ( for school) and was having a tough time finding one at any price point, until I found this. It was such a great price I ordered two. When they arrived my husband and I were pleasantly surprised by the quality. and the easy set up of the free Web Root anti-virus. After a week we ordered another for the in-laws and they couldn't be happier. We have all been using our laptops for over a month and none of us have had any trouble or any regrets. They are more than I hoped for at this low, low, price point. The only thing I miss is the back lit keyboard but no one else even noticed until I mentioned it. This is a great machine for a great price! PS I'm not a fan of Windows 8 but it's not the computers fault, everything it does, it does well and it's very quick and responsive. It's probably not good for gamers but if you are just using it for surfing, email, videos, and household use, then I highly recommend.

Learning all the "moves" with the touchpad is a challenge without a written manual,. Didn't realize the paucity of software applications in laptop and will have to acquire WORD or equivalent (as other computers always arrived with a Starter word processor and spreadsheet. Fast enough for my applications and seems to have some nice features. Windows 8 hard to get used to but it's a learning experience.

I bought this to replace a 7 year old Acer Aspire 3680 running XP/Xubuntu (dual boot). Windows 8.1 a BIG improvement over XP! The computer seems solidly built, but still light to carry. I appreciate the full-size keyboard. I'm not a big fan of touchpads in general, but this one is at least useable. Very quiet; I think it has a fan but I can't hear it. I love the larger display with the bright clear images! The DVD-RW is a nice extra not usually found on laptops in this price range. There is only an audio-out jack for headphones; no input jacks for microphone or line in. The built-in speakers are only OK; fine for speech but not up my audiophile standards for music. The N2830 CPU is very new and it still has a few bugs; it won't boot Ubuntu 14.04. But, Intel is working on a fix to the microcode, so this is only a temporary problem.

The touchpad makes me crazy! First of all, it's not in the center (its slightly to the left of center), so I am forever accidently clicking the right side. Also, there is no clear definition of the area that is supposed to be clicked, ie the area that replaces the mouse clickers. And because of these two things, the base of my right thumb is constantly hitting the touchpad and sending me to who-knows-where. But for $229, I shouldn't complain!

I really like this computer and for the low price I really cannot complain. All low end laptops feel cheap anymore but this one was one of the better options. The only negative thing I can say so far is that I am not a fan of the way that the touchpad works and I opted for a wireless mouse and do not use the touchpad.

I have learned to like this computer. Big learning curve from MAC to Windows 8.1. Have a long way to go but , for news ,emails amazon ,and e-bay can not be beat. Slow but got out of store for $300 including 1 year warranty, and webroot. Learning to like it Microsoft .Microsoft censors most of drudge report. Must use Yahoo to stay on longer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had an issue with an update getting stuck in limbo and affecting the operating system. Took it to the Geek Squad and they wanted to charge me $129 to reload the operating system or I could take my chances leave it plugged in and see what happens. I chose the latter and it resolved the problem. The computer is less than 30 days after purchase and it was the 2nd time I had turned it on. If I purchase a computer with an OS I have purchased the OS. Either give me a disk, or the product code that if the OS does become corrupted I can reload it myself. The computer is great, the OS sucks and the GS was a disappointment

Regarding its price, I have good experience for avarage daily use. It's light, big screen is good for watching series and the price is very good. Its downside is touch pad which is not user friendly at all. I have another 10 inches touch screen ASUS, it's touch pad is perfect. If you don't want to spend too much on laptop and you don't want to work heavy on daily bases is a good option.

I was debating whether to buy a tablet or a laptop for my daughter who is 7th grade, but I didn't want to spend more than 300 dollars. This Asus did the trick. I odered it and picked it up in 30 minutes the lo. local bestbuy. The laptop is very plain looking, but It's very fast and has an excellent battery life. UNDER $200.00, it was a very easy decision.

Our laptop was on it's last legs and with my Wife being a photographer and us going to Europe. We needed a cheap, lightweight laptop to take with us, so she could download her photos everyday. This laptop is exactly what it advertises. A $250 basic laptop. I is fast, capable and great for internet, email and work. I highly recommend for those things.

Original unit had defunct CMOS clock (would not keep time while shut down), but exchange at Best Buy for identical model was easy and straightforward. Very nice laptop for its price, compact and lightweight with nonetheless decent performance.

It was at a great price and it works fine. Sometimes it can be slow depending on where you are if using wifi. Other than that it works well for basic school necessities. Plus its light weight.

Yes, it is hard to find "good" and "cheap" in the same system, but Asus has done it! I am a double major college student and I use this laptop everyday to take notes, do homework, submit online assignemnets, and even watch Netflix and DVDs. I have used it for over 6 weeks and have loved every minute of it. I would make my decision again in a heartbeat.

I bought three of these laptops for my wife, my daughter and myself. I do some traveling for my job and this unit is too big for the roller bags I have. I have to use a backpack or my other laptop when I travel. The unit works well but feels "cheap" with the keyboard and case being plastic and it feels too light to survive. We will have to see if they survive. As for the video, great for watching movies, shows, etc. from both Hulu Plus and Netflix. I would give it a 89 out of 100. The lower rating because of the size and the feel of the case.

Got this based on price alone. Needed a laptop to take outside and run a telescope. It's cheaply made but I don't handle it roughly and it has worked perfectly for a couple yrs now. Upgraded to Win10 - no issues. So if you want an inexpensive laptop for a side project, I'd get it.

I purchased this laptop for my 9 year old daughter. She likes to Skype her cousin while also playing on the Webkinz site and this works very well for that. She is also able to use it for school work. She can stream Netflix on it as we have a monthly membership and she is able to watch videos on her favorite sites such as PBS Kids and Nickelodeon. I paid $224.00 for it as I had a $5 Best Buy coupon, and it came with a free 6 month antivirus offer. It is pretty zippy and seems to handle multitasking very well; i.e.. video chatting while also on a website such as webkinz. We looked at chrome books, but found that she could not have used Skype (would have had to choose Google Hangouts instead), so given the price of this being only a bit more, we chose to go with a traditional laptop. She is familiar with Windows 8, so no learning curve necessary and the machine seems sturdy enough. I can recommend this to anyone looking for a basic laptop for work, school, or entertainment. The battery life is fine as she uses it in the home and it can be charged at night. I would estimate that she gets 5 - 6 hours of battery life on this laptop.

So far, my Asus is wonderful. I'm SURE I'm not using it to it's full capacity, however I only got it because I my old HP keeps overheating and the vent placement on those are awful. I use it primarily for work/school and gaming. I love that it gives me tips on how to keep my computer running strong and faster so I don't have to always run to my techie friends. Asus is a brand I trust and so far it does not get hot (even when I first got my HP it would get hot fast). I consider this a really inexpensive investment and I can already tell this computer will outlast my HP that I've had for 7yrs.
