Worth the Money for a Budget Laptop

Why are you buying this? What do you want your laptop to do? I will speak to my expectations. I wanted something for casual use, mostly web browsing. Chromebooks would fit this bill nicely as well but with this laptop you get a full-fledged operating system that's not focused on Cloud computing. I figure this is ASUS's entry to compete with the Chromebook market. You get a 500GB Hard Drive and 4GBs of RAM. This RAM is not expandable but 4GBs is enough for a lot of things. It's not a laptop for extensive movie editing or Photoshop but yes it could be done, albeit a lot slower. It will be great for email, surfing the internet and running various programs. I was pleasantly surprised that it played 720p and 1080p videos on Youtube very well. The screen looks great and the touchpad was very responsive. Looking at the bottom of the laptop there are no compartments to get access to the hard drive or ram, nor is there a detachable battery, it's all enclosed. The wireless connected fine and no issues with disconnecting. I haven't installed any games on it but I imagine it would run some less graphic intensive games OK, but it's definitely not made for gaming. I have to say I get tired of people ragging on Windows 8, I installed the free Classic Shell program and it gave me a normal Start Button on the traditional Desktop that we all are used to. You don't even have to use the 'Tile's' desktop. (make sure you configure it to bypass the Tile Desktop..easy) So now you basically have a XP or Windows 7 environment. Battery life is a couple of hours at least and varies depending how you are using it. I hooked it up to my 47in TV and it displayed the web and YouTube very well. Long story short, it's a very good value for the price, now 229.99. Documentation wise, it says charge for 3hrs before first use and then press the Power Button, but really, that's all you need to do. Speakers? What laptop gives really good sound? Use external speakers or earbuds. As I have a powerful desktop computer for the heavy stuff this really fits the bill for casual, on the go use. Hope you found this helpful.

I bought his computer to replace an HP and I am very disappointed The touchpad is very clumsy and I don't know if its the Kaspersky but it takes several seconds for webpages to come up and explorer is always shutting down, at least once a day. Volume is not enough when streaming movies

Works great, has what most people need

I am an IT professional and I use this computer for personal use. So far I've used it to stream shows to TV via HDMI cable, iTunes, browse the internet, read books, scanning using Nuance Paperport, I installed that but it has a scanning feature, zipping docs using 7Zip, freeware that I installed, downloading/uploading files and I have it wirelessly connected to my printer and WIFI. This laptop has what most people need in terms of processor speed and memory and the price $229 is great #got it on tax free weekend so even better#. I thought about an Apple but I could by 4 or 5 of these for the price of that and everything gets so old so why bother. If you are a serious gamer or like to do lots of music and video editing then this wouldn't be for you but for most of people it's just right. It doesn't have MS Office. You have to use a copy you already have or buy it but that's normal when you are buying a computer. The battery lasts about 4 hours which is good. The speaker isn't the best but it works. I plug in some speakers I have so it don't even think about it anyway. It only has the 1 audio plug in. When you plug in it asks if it's stereo, headset or headphone so you can't have a headset and stereo both plugged in if you are used to that. You can connect another monitor to it to it if you want to extend your desktop. It can also burn CDs. It uses Windows 8 which has been an adjustment but once you play around with it it's not really an issue #still like XP better, lol). Windows 8 is what everything's going to anyway so just accept and learn it now. It sucks that I have to login to the computer with a Hotmail account. Microsoft needs to but out of my computer logins. The only minor complaint I have is that the click on the right and left button of the touchpad has a hard click, makes a noise but I use a mouse most of the time so no big deal. The touchpad does work though. I've seen a lot of people complain about the case being plastic, not sure what they are talking about because most laptops are all plastic, even if you se silver bits they are usually plastic, it makes it lighter. I wouldn't go throwing the thing on the floor but I wouldn't recommend doing that with any computer.

Only good thing was the price and Best Buy service. This computer is slower than an 8 year old Toshiba I replaced! The mouse/control are left of center therefore always having popups. Hate the performnce and am sorry I ever purchased it.

    Great Price on Decent Machine

This is great laptop for under $250. Being in the same price range as Chromebooks, I'd have to say this machine wins my vote. The only complaint I have is the insane amount of bloat that is pre-installed on this thing. But that's probably part of why it is so cheap, subsidized deals to load software and apps before the customer even buys it. The good news is, it's all very easy to uninstall as soon as turn it on. I am not a fan of Windows 8 Metro mode, so I stick to desktop and have very little to complain about. The computer runs well and has handled all I've thrown at it so far (Office/music/video). Don't expect a high-end machine for gaming or intensive multimedia and you'll be very happy with this laptop. I would recommend this to anyonelooking for a cheap notebook to use daily.

I thought this computer felt cheap and very much like plastic that can break easily. The mouse pad was annoying and didn't work easily, and the computer was very slow.

This has to be one of the worst laptops out there. I used it for 1 year, all I used it for was writing papers for school and the battery died, you could only turn it on if it was plugged in, was super slow and sometimes would shut off, was very aggravating, I had to save my papers after every sentence because one time I was writing a 4 page paper and shut off and I lost it. I bought a MacBook after and I’ve never had that problem after 3 years of owning the MacBook
