I wish I could give 0 stars! The laptop sounded reasonable for the $229, but really isn't. It's the thinnest plastic body I've ever seen. You could break it in two, it's that thin. Trust me. It's super lightweight, to the point where you wonder how it's even running. I wish I had read the reviews before I bought it. The battery is LITERALLY in the laptop (like Apple Macbook/Air products). So if your battery goes dead, your al most only option is to send it in to ASUS for replacement or take it to a local computer shop and hope they know how to replace the battery inside without breaking it (possible warranty voided). It has no recovery partition, other than the notorious Windows 8 "reset option," if you want to sit and wait 2 hours for it completely factory reset. Otherwise, if something goes wrong, you're screwed. Along with you having to buy a Windows 8 Pro retail disc. The product key is embedded in the motherboard and does not come with a product key sticker. Also, ASUS Support is a joke, they keep directing you to Microsoft if there are any problems with the software, or if you want to downgrade to Windows 7 Pro, which apparently you have to pay for. You have to pay for them to send you discs, and all of the software is installed on the hard drive, not partitioned like it should be. If you do a clean install, you lose what you paid for. There are no LED lights on the keyboard, so you don't know if some keys are on until you type. DVD's don't play well, it keeps searching and finding the files, and then says the disc cannot be played. I'd pass on this, it's tricky for the price, but you get what you pay for.

I use a mouse with my laptop so I have no issue with the touch pad. I using this for my home use, and giving my older laptop to my grandson. I feel I got a great deal.

Was looking forward to setting this up until I turned it on and the hard drive started to pop and click. It eventually made it through setup, but the drive errors showed a hard drive failure was imminent so I had to return this laptop. Would have been a great buy for the price, sadly I won't ever know as the store claimed to not have any for exchange even though I found two on the shelf.

As far as I can see, the computer is good. Expect to get what you pay for though...the plastic body seems a bit flimsy. Other than that the ascetics and computer look great.

Cheap Laptop, and not much else

I purchase this laptop because of all the great reviews and price. It has pretty good battery life and that's about it.... I used this laptop only for work since I travel. Touch-pad and screen both stopped working about 4 months in. I decided to just turn off the touch screen and call it a day. The touch pad on the other hand was the icing on the awful Asus cake. The touch pad has now decided to stop working after about 10 minutes of the laptop being on. The only way to navigate is to turn it off and try again for touch-pad to work... Now I am stuck to used a wireless mouse (basically taking away the convince of a laptop.) to navigate. The screen must be made of low quality glass because It got cracked while in my computer bag during a daily commute... If you are working or moving around (students) or really anything other than web browsing or cheap laptop STAY AWAY!!! Save your 250$ and just buy a better made product. I was pleased with purchase for about a month... no product longevity ...Would never buy again

    how to get started

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The main problem with the Asus computer is on getting started. Not only is there no manual, the only thing the furnished Quick Start Guide tells you is how to charge the notebook and the location of the Start button. The manual can be obtained on-line, but how do you do that if you do not know how to operate the computer, how to get on-line, etc.?

Besides running all my software with no trouble at all, this unit also comes with a DVD/CD rom drive which other laptops at this price don't have.

    a very bad laptop

In August 2014.I bought two of these laptops, one for me and one for my daughter. The battery does not last more than two hours and when it notifies me that I have an hour and thirty seven minutes of charge the laptop goes off in twenty minutes or less. My daughter also has the same problem. Two months ago she started using this laptop and the touch panel does not work anymore. The only way she can use her laptop is with a wireless mouse. Maybe other people do not have problems with their laptop but in my experience with two of these laptops I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT..

I ended up exchanging this laptop for a HP model due to the difficulties I was having with the touchpad and mouse click buttons. I wouldn't recommend this laptop to a friend. The problem I believe is related to the fact that there are not seperate bottons from the touch pad and mouse buttons are all one piece so it is difficult to operate.

    Cheap laptop poorly made

I purchased this laptop for my daughter. She had it less than 3 months when the screen cracked, leaving this laptop as an expensive paper weight. My son was carrying the laptop to another room and when he started it the screen was cracked and the background was ruined. The laptop has a very cheap and flimsy top. It appears to be too thin and not supported. I have three other laptops and they are all much sturdier and better made. I sent it back, my cost $35 and they did not even reply, they just sent it back to us and said the damage was not covered. I purchased it online so I did not know how cheaply made and flimsy it was. Never going to get anything ASUS ever again

May be a good price, but be warned. When you start up the laptop for the first time, do the backup FIRST! I had this laptop for 4 months then the system crashed. Couldn't recover because of no backup. We had no recovery software media. Called Asus and they said they do not have it for this cheap model. Now have to go back to Best Buy and hope they won't charge me much for recovery. Better off buying a new one, maybe this time, Mac!

Bought this Saturday...11/08/2014. Also bought the cable to transfer my files from my older laptop to this one. This Asus is so hard to use. Hooked the transfer cable up.....it reads it on my old laptop but not the new one. Tried for almost 6 hours to make this happen. And it kept loading a lot of programs I did not want. Took forever to uninstall them and then they appeared again. Taking this back plus the transfer cable.

I hate this computer. The sales man sold me a piece of junk! I was going to buy a different brand and he bragged about how this company manufactures its own parts so the quality is supurb, bologna! It can not keep up with my typing, and I am SLOW! Now I am even slower for it will catch up by skipping whole sentences. DO NOT BUY!!!!! Best Buy Tech support was worthless too
