Great Laptop for College Student!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Before I bought this computer, I had no idea what kind of company Asus was, and how their laptops were. I've always been an HP kind of guy, thinking that no other manufacturer can satisfy my needs. Now that I have one, I can honestly say I will be buying another in the future. I am amazed at how fast this computer is! I will be leaving for college next week, and with a campus of 25,000 students using the same WiFi, I definitely didn't want to be lagging! With the i5 Processor it breezes through the internet with no problem. Not only is it fast, I love the built quality. It looks really sleek and upscale! If you have the chance to buy one, I would definitely go for it! :D

Review/ Upgrading Ram
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If anyone wants to upgrade there ram , don't go through the headache of trying to figure it out with best buy or asus for hours like i did, the ONLY ram this laptop will take is DDR3 1.5V , which best buy normally doesnt carry in the store, although they do carry it online and can ship it to you, if not you can buy it online easily, but it just kinda makes me wonder why they don't include any information stating it only excepts 1.5V to save everyone the headache when updating there ram, unless your really tech savy and know that kinda stuff right off that bat, but i wouldn't imagine that would be the case as everyone at geeksquad was stumped... Altogether i did update my ram to 12gb( including 4gb in laptop) . The computer is lightning fast and great for the price, the only con i can think of is the touch pad , the left and right click are one with the mouse pad, so basically you can try to click something and move the mouse and click something else.Other that that little con that has nothing to do with the preformance, theres nothing else i can really think of . Overall laptop rating : 5/5 . Informative rating : 1/5 . Hope this helps someone.

Great laptop for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For $400 it is a great laptop. It has everything necessary for work. I bought it for my uncle. I like intel core i5 and its design. DVD drive is not necessary, but anyway it is better to have it :)

Nice laptop for the price...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this laptop yesterday morning at my local Best Buy store and have had some time to set it up and play around with it. I think for the price it's a great laptop. I purchased this primarily for simple computing like internet surfing, e-mail, Word documents, PDFs, etc. I don't use it for gaming, watching videos or anything like that...I've got an iPad to do those things. The setup was very easy, the performance seems to be great and with some customization the Windows 8 experience also seems to be working well. The only complaint I would make is that this laptop is entirely made of plastic and while it may look good, it definitely feels like it's made of that cheap plastic. This would not handle even a 2ft drop. My other complain is the touchpad which sometimes is simply unresponsive...this could actually become annoying with time but for now its fine. But again...for the price...awesome purchase!

Great laptop for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great laptop and specs for the price. Only complaint is the new BIOS/UEFI (however I think this is on all Win 8 laptops). Very difficult to select boot device, or even boot to another OS. Also had troubles when trying to install a SSD, windows would not boot correctly and when it did, it would constantly crash. Had to stick with a HDD.

After 1 year, I am satisfied.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After 1 year, I am satisfied. Of course, time will tell. Hopefully, it lasts a few years without any issues. I agree with other reviews that there should be a couple of more ports. I needed one more USB port to charge my MP3 player. I use the one USB 2.0 port for my mouse.

Great for Students
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a performance computer at a very good price. The only issue I have is that, even though it states the wireless is "n", don't expect high speed since it only operates on "b/g" and not "a" band (2.4 vs 5 GHz). N is a 40 MHz channel and on a BG band you wont get the higher speeds as you only have 3 clear channels to begin with. So now you will only have 1 clear channel. Other devices that are not "n" rated will knock you back to b/g standard rates.

Great i5 Intel Processor Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The price was awesome, especially for a i5 Intel processor. The Asus brand laptop was also a plus, there were bundles that included a wireless a sleeve that were cheaper but were i3 Intel processors.

Excellent Computer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I chose an ASUS laptop because my previous laptop was an ASUS that lasted well over four years without any issues. Although this new laptop came with Window 8, which I did not like, I went to Microsoft's website and with the help of a courteous technician was able to upgrade to Windows 8.1 for free. I have found Windows 8.1 to be intuitive and user friendly. I am now very happy with my new ASUS laptop! It's a great solid computer.

Salesman was not truthful
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My computer crashed and I needed a new one so I went to Best Buy to purchase it. I told the salesman that I did not know anything about computers except how to use one and wanted a good computer but didn't want to spend $1000 on one. I also asked if they had any with Windows 7 and he said no. I told him I did not like Windows 8 but heard that Windows 8,1 was a little better than the 8 version. He showed me the ASUS X550LA and told me that the computer came with Windows 8.1. I asked him about this several times, telling him I did not want to do updates when I got home and he assured me that the computer he was suggesting had Windows 8.1. I purchased the computer, brought it home and did the set-up only to find out that it does not have 8.1 but Windows 8. In order to upgrade, I had to do updates to Windows. This computer had over 90 updates that I had to do before I could try to update it. Now, I wonder just how outdated this computer really is but more importantly, I don't appreciate the salesman telling me things about the computer that were not true. I am having a terrible time trying to upgrade to the Windows 8.1, even after doing all of the updates required. I did not pay $100 for Geek Squad because I felt that the salesman was honest with me. Now, I have a computer that I can't even update without paying someone to update my new computer to the version that I was told I was purchasing. It also does not have Windows Office, which I advised that I needed. I know if I take it back, it will be a hassle, as it always is with Best Buy but there aren't many options to purchase computers from in my area.

Good laptop for the price; fantastic upgraded.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was the cheapest laptop with a current generation i5 processor. It functions reasonably well, aside from a bit of bottlenecking due to the subpar HDD. However, replacing the hard drive with a small SSD and upgrading to 8GB of RAM will make it competitive against systems that are priced substantially higher.

Used as a Desktop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ever since Windows 8.1 got pushed down and even before the memory would simply run out by having Google Chrome running (besides the MS services). As an Engineer I have re-imaged this machine time and time and it always the same problem. Every patch is installed every driver is the newest, still "Please close some running programs your Computer is running low on memory, to avoid loss of work in progress or something of the sort" Microsoft Premier Support was at a loss so I just re-imaged it back to Windows 7 Enterprise and no more problems. So, bottom line is either some built in driver from WIN8 is having a memory leak that does not exist in WIN7. I forgot, 4 GIG of Memory and 500 GB HD.

Posted .Dear zrh2sfo,
I understand that you have issue with windows 8.1 that's the reason you downgraded to windows 7. I jut want to ask if you tried doing a system restore to revert to last known good configuration then install all windows recommended updates before using the system.
