NEVER BUY ANY ASUS PRODUCT EVER!

Warning: If you buy any ASUS product, in my case a higher end laptop, and it breaks (manufactures warranty or not) THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS COMPLETELY USELESS. Had repeated and various problems and sent back laptop (4) times, all refurbished and non-functional. After the fourth time, I was promised a new model, still in the litigation process, been a month now and they are trying to send me another refurbished same model. I work as a supervisor in State Government and will do everything in my limited power to use a different company for Government business. Best Buy was excellent, and fully understand that models break down, but was severely disappointed in the customer service from ASUS. Buyer be extremely cautious. I just lost 1200$ to ASUS and have nothing to show for it. I was always told how great of a company ASUS was and how great their components are but that is NO LONGER TRUE! They have not won any significant awards since 2013 (you can look that up) and are no longer this great company. I bought the computer 11 months ago and have not had the computer in my possession for 4 of those 11 months. Here is my story, if you want the details of what I went through: I bought an ASUS notebook (Republic of Gamers) in 12/2015.....it failed in April 2015 for a failed component in my charger, it fried my daughter board, sent into their repair center....3 weeks later got the same model back and fixed...it failed AGAIN in July 2015 with a failed Intel Graphics card.... sent back to repair center....ANOTHER 3 weeks later got the same computer back fixed......failed AGAIN in Aug. 2015, failed NVIDA graphics card....sent in to repair...3 weeks later got a refurbished same model replacement.....had that for 3 weeks then failed AGAIN when a component failed in my screen....sent back in to repair center...3 weeks later got MY 2ND REFURBISHED same model and it came BROKEN!! It didn’t even work when I got it. I sent that model in the repair center, got there 11/4, they mixed up my RMA number so I did not match my serial number, took a week to figure that you, I was promised by their top supervisors that with this many failed model I would be eligible for a new, upgraded different model replacement. Couldn’t get ahold of the supervisor I have been talking to, she was avoiding my phone calls. I got an email from the support center that they are offering me AGAIN, THE SAME MODEL REFURBISHED replacement for the 3rd time. If I was to reject this offer, and they choose not to offer me anything else, they said they are going to SEND BACK MY BROKEN COMPUTER and that would be it! The customer support said they actually have nothing to do with what replacement you would get. It’s all up to the repair center, and you cannot speak to the repair center, because, “it is not in their job description to talk to the public.” All this has happened while in the manufactures warranty. I bought the computer 11 months ago and have not had the computer in my possession for 4 of those 11 months. Once again, beware, if you decide to go with ASUS because you are risking hundreds or thousands of dollars (in my case).

    Mediocre at best

Display is great. Zero complaints there. Saw other comments about scaling-- dial it to whatever you'd like and be happy!! Note that it can take a bit of tweaking to remote desktop apps to work correctly but this is *not* specific to this laptop. SSD + conventional HD is great-- speed + storage capacity!! CPU is actually slower than a 6 year old i5 desktop I have (both in feel and benchmarking). Don't think 7th generation i7 means a thing-- check a benchmarking site if you want to see the real perfomance compared to another laptop. Windows 10 is horrible (not unique to this laptop of course). Tablet mode simply doesn't work properly. Keyboard and touchpad doesn't lock out, screen won't rotate orientation properly, just doesn't work. I spent some time with driver updates, etc.-- no change. The touchpad is "numb". Works adequately, but we have a $169 Chromebook that is about as good. Also note that the touchpad is inexplicably shifted to the left. Takes a bit of getting used to. I noticed this before purchasing and was willing to accept this. Battery life is absurdly bad. If you're doing much of anything, maybe 3 hours at most. I've managed to run it down in less with streaming video. I have not once come anywhere near the claimed 5 hours. This is stripped down with nothing but a browser open-- nothing running in the background other than the usual Windows bloatware. The WiFi has the worst range of any device we own including old tablets, cell phones, multiple laptops, a cheap Chromebook, etc. There are areas where a cheap Chromebook works fine, but this laptop literally is nonfunctional. Even when close to the AP, the throughput is lower than all other 802.11ac devices used from the same location. If anyone is wondering, a USB3.1 to DisplayPort adapter does work on an UHD external monitor at 60 Hz. I had some issues when unplugging/plugging back in but they appeared to be related to the monitor or adapter, and not this laptop. Overall, while it' a relatively good laptop, I'm very close to returning it and getting something else. I just can't recommend a laptop where so many advertised features don't work as advertised. The battery life and dysfunctional tablet mode are the worst.

WORST - hard drive failed in less than 2 weeks

I have always purchased HP or Dell products. This time I decided to take a chance on Asus. People keep raving about them. Well now I am too but not in a good way. I shelled out $1400+ for a top of the line Asus. The reason I chose it over the others was the 2 Tb hard drive they put in it in addition to the SSD drive. I thought that would be a nice little bonus. I travel with a 16 Tb NAS and 2 8 Tb Passport drives and keep things backed up and I thought having that extra 2 Tb on the laptop for additional backups would be sweet. After taking the usual week to get everything installed on it...now when I am dependent upon it the hard drive has failed! Yep...less than 2 weeks and the 2 Tb drive is excrement! It said there was a drive issue and wanted to scan and repair. Well for THREE DAYS now it has spent all day scanning and repairing boots up and runs slower than my kids and then when I restart it I get the scanning and repairing which takes at least 8 hours or so to run but never really seems to accomplish anything. I did an old fashioned chkdsk last night to see and it got to about 1/2 the drive just fine then...yep...bad sector...it just kept saying bad sector for EVERY sector! I finally shut it down. It's going back to the store after this crazy holiday shopping weekend and I'm demanding a FULL REFUND. I'm within my return window. I'm not willing to send it off for repairs under the extended warranty. I bought a new machine because I NEEDED one i could RELY on. Buying it and having to send it in to get it fixed within 2 weeks. NOT COOL... I guess that means I'm stuck going back to HP (of which I've had TWO lately that just run dog slow with no reason why despite all the extra memory put in them they take 30 minutes or more to boot due to some bloatware running that came preinstalled) or a Dell.

Expected better things from Asus, but a little over 4 years later the battery is going and the keyboard is glitch. This was a high end keyboard so it may be worth fixing given the cost of things now, but sure wish it would have held up better given the kind of care I've taken with it.

Overall, this Laptop is perfect. For you gamers out there, it runs Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefield 4 on Ultra/High. For you nerdy college kids wanting a decent laptop that can handle your Netflix & ice cream binging, this laptop will easily deliver. For me, I constantly game and watch Hulu. This laptop has shown no issues within its first week. I'm very happy with my purchase :) ***Note*** It doesn't say it, but it includes a mini subwoofer that comes along with the computer, that has it's own port. Another sweet add on that comes with your purchase!

From what I have read. The new I7-7500 cpu is optimized for 4K video. The screen is excellent and the back lit keyboard is nice. This laptop turns into a tablet as well. It exceeded my expectations. Sound is nice. The price is very reasonable. Now I thank God through Jesus Christ for the ability to use it best.

    Bad Performance and Faulty Hardware

So I originally bought a Lenovo 2-in-1 Yogo 15.6 laptop that ended up coming out of the box with a broken wireless and audio card. Lenovo Tech Support Remote accessed my computer to confirm the hardware was defective, so, I returned it to Best Buy and decided on getting this ASUS 2-in-1 from high recommendations from the sales staff. Unfortunately, the computer barely functioned out of the box. It was extremely slow! I mean extremely slow... Whenever I would type something, it would take anywhere from 3-10 seconds for the computer to relay the information onto the screen. I had horrible screen tearing, blackouts, and random re-boots in the middle of my few work sessions with it. The laptop also could not recognize when the computer was in tablet or laptop mode. Even disabling tablet mode still caused the built in keyboard, external mouse, and any other device plugged into the USB's to crash or stop working... I could only use the pop up touch keyboard to type after minutes of booting up. It's basically just a tablet, since the laptop functions constantly crashed or didn't work. The speakers are also located on the bottom of the computer, which obviously becomes extremely muffled if its on any type of surface, so they include a little stand alone speaker that basically blasts horrible low end frequencies to compensate for the low end missing from being suffocated on the bottom of the laptop. Unless that too was broken, plugging it in only caused bass to play through the stand-alone speaker, and the treble frequencies to still play out of the bottom of the laptop. Very strange, with horrible overall sound quality. I also noticed the screen brightness was very dim at the brightest available options. And, to add insult to injury, the first night I had it I just about ran the battery out and charged the computer for about 10 hours over night, to which it had only charged 40% upon starting up in the morning... It would only charge extremely slow while off, or basically idle when charging while the laptop was on. I would not recommend this or the Lenovo Yoga 2-1 15.6 4k Laptop.

    Not what I expected!

I’ve had this laptop now for 2 months (10/20/2016) and use it every day. Would I purchase again? NO - Here’s why. I’m a user with no real computer knowledge. And I do mean NONE. I purchased this laptop for the storage and what I thought would be a faster laptop then the one I had, thinking it would last me until I die. I was wrong. In my opinion it’s overpriced & setup incorrectly (keyboard/number pad/touchpad positioned/spaced incorrectly). Within a month of transferring information from my previous laptop to this one it said I was out of storage. NO WAY - So I started looking around to find the problem. I found a file (I guess it’s called a file) called Settings. Within this file there is another file called Storage. Under this storage file there is something called storage drives. Anyways, apparently, everything was being stored to this "C" drive which only has 476 GB. There is another drive called “DATA (D:)” which has 1.81 TB. Now remember I’m clueless about this stuff!! So, I’m ready to throw this thing across the room! Shortly before this incident the screen started fluttering and freezing on me! Do I know why, of course not! The only way to unfreeze it is to hold the power button until it completely shuts off. So, after 2 months I’m furious with myself for spending so much money on this thing. It still freezes up on me in the middle of my projects causing loss of recent data. The touch pad is off centered so I’m constantly missing what I’m trying to hit with the pointer. For some reason the pointer disappears within my work somewhere and is a royal pain to find. The keyboard & number pad is off in relationship to other laptops I’ve used, which translates to constant mistakes! When I flip it over to use just the screen it doesn’t flip the information so it’s upside down! That’s really cool! There’s also no written manual included in the box, so if you don’t know anything like me, you'll need to find someone who knows that you need to go online to get it (TG for grandkids and their internet). OH, and if you don’t have internet that makes it an awesome plus for you! So, if you’re a grandma like me, and basically computer illiterate, don’t buy this thing. It’ll frustrate you to know end. I’m ready to go back to pen & paper cuz when this thing goes down all my work is gone! Also, the review on October 31, 2016 by dpuza is spot on! Yes, I finally read the reviews after I purchased it, thanks to my grandkids knowledge of where to look.

    A deep disappointment

I did a lot of research before I bought this laptop- the first laptop I have purchased that wasn't a Mac in many years. Using the Chrome browser I had ongoing problems with the page font size changing. I researched this problem in some user groups and found that the solution was to disable the touchpad from accepting a pinching gesture to change the size. The battery only lasts a few hours. Internet Explorer will not stop sending me messages that it is a better browser than Chrome. In the last month the laptop has started up flashing a blue screen of death and says there is a win32 full sys problem and my computer is now going to restart. Then, in the last couple of weeks, it just spontaneously, and seemingly randomly, shuts off. One time the screen would not come on and luckily I used my phone to research ways to address that and one of the suggestions worked. I have had this laptop in for repair once and all the Geek Squad did was let the Windows updates run. That did not fix it. (They said it did not fail when they tested it. I have now taken multiple screen shots of the blue screen of death appearing with my cell phone.) When it started failing again I went in and stripped it of nonessential apps and programs and took it down to bare bones and it still fails. The next thing Geek Squad wants to do is restore it to how it came from the factory. I spent hours setting this laptop up, and now I am going to lose all that work and will have to do it again. I have never hated a laptop before, but I have learned to hate this one. It is not reliable, it can't be trusted to work, and if I had the opportunity to go back in time and decide to buy it again or not I most assuredly would not purchase it.

Nightmarish tech support & defunct Type C Port

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Its a beautiful laptop with great many features for which I bought it. And one of the most important features it has is the Thunderbolt 3 (Type C) port so that I could use a Thunderbolt 3 dock and switch easily between my MacBook Pro 2016 and this laptop. Its Type C port also has Thunderbolt icon printed over it. Thunderbolt 3 is a all in one specification. Via one cable, It can give you all the USB devices, Video, Audio and power. So connect just one cable and done. However, when I connected this laptop to a dock that I purchased for $275, its power charging was not working at all. And USB devices connected to the dock kept freezing and reconnecting. And then my tech support nightmare started. I contacted Asus and first thing they did was to s shrug off responsibility. They just said we don't support this dock, purchase the Asus dock. I went ahead and tried 8 different docks and Type C to USB A cables. Including the Asus Dock. None worked. So I contacted tech support again. They said send us the laptop, we will fix it. I wrote a detailed problem description and repro steps for them to test along with the laptop. But all they did was replace the motherboard and partially install the OS. When I got the laptop the Windows 10 was not even fully installed and it was asking for product key. So they had not even tested to see if the issue was gone. Of course the issue was not gone. I had to contact again. They said send the laptop again. This time I sent a page full of problem description and how to test it. But again they replaced the motherboard and sent it back to me. Once again without testing. And the issue is still there. I had to contact again and they said send the laptop again. Common!!! How many times should I send the laptop? I have spent $1500 on the laptop and the laptop is spending its days at the Asus service center. WTH??? When I said I will not send the laptop again and that I need a replacement, they told me that they will give me a laptop which is rejected by someone. That means I will inherit someone else's problem laptop. And for that too they said they will get back to me. And they have not called me back since. After every call they will tell you that they will gather some info and call you back within 2-3 days. And they never call back. After you call them you have to tell the whole story to a stranger because they cannot transfer me to the person I last spoke to. Since last two months I have been hopelessly playing these games with Asus Tech Support. And no doubt it is the worst ever tech support I have experienced in my life so far.

The specs seem good, and the 4k screen is definitely enticing. However, it has soooo many bugs and things that go wrong. The tablet mode is horrible, I've had numerous bugs where my laptop won't sleep or will resize things weird or just mess up the interface. It doesn't really run that fast and has a slow time loading webpages and file explorer. My keyboard is already falling apart and I've only had my laptop for under a year. Keys are squeaking and falling off. The auxiliary jack is also broken and won't pick up microphone inputs. Overall this laptop seemed fantastic but so many things break and go wrong that it's not worth it.

This computer gets an F--. I could spend another hour retyping al the problems I've had with this computer, particularly the extremely poor touchpad control, major problems with touchpad screen scrolling, the lack of screen brightness and pronounced dim screen (compared to quality displays), and even a bug in one of the Asus software utilities (NO excuse for this one), but I'm not going to do that, since this touchpad caused everything that I already typed to be deleted. But trust me, in spite of all the wonderful specs (including huge hard drive, huge SSD, i7 processor, high resolution display), this computers is far, far, far from being ready for primetime. If you value your sanity... You will be sorry if you do. I know that the other major brands, such as Dell, HP, and Toshiba have been getting reviews of non-existent customer service that basically refuse to honor their warranties, and that Toshiba has even exited the consumer PC business, but there has got to be a better brand out there, somewhere.

I spent hours... HOURS reading reviews, researching different brands, comparing models and brands from multiple sources. I've been a computer engineer for 30 years, and getting a new primary machine is a big deal. Mainly because it takes days to move all my apps, data, preferences... and in this case purchasing additional tools to transfer my Mac based email into Outlook compatible for the PC. The trackpad on this laptop is infuriating! But that's only part of the problem. Right out of the box, it froze and had to be powered off and back on. Then, it had an error popping up every 10 seconds at minimum for process failures, errors etc. I fixed those, which I shouldn't have to. Now the trackpad has never worked properly, so I set off to fix that (which I shouldn't have to) and guess what? ASUS doesn't even recognize the model number. Not only that, but the closest similar model number has different hardware- so I can't just use the software from that. Most of the hardware has windows generic drivers- NOT a good sign. Especially for things like display/monitor/touchpad etc. It has two control panels for video- as it has two chipsets, and you can't actually change the settings in any way that make sense. Did I mention there is no driver for the useless touchpad? It can sometimes scroll, sometimes not, sometimes will randomly move the cursor and in one case it selected something and deleted it. Seriously? The build quality is FAR below any other decent computer, but I was willing to trade that for storage. Lots of reviewers on here blame ASUS because the default drive is the smaller SSD. Well, that's stupid. The user is completely wrong on that one. The large drive is so slow, there must be something wrong. The support is the worst I've seen... and in an industry where it's commonplace to have completely useless support. Heck, they don't even recognize the model. In the end, it's a bottom end laptop with "impressive" claims- but it's still a bottom end laptop. It's better to give up some storage capability and get a better computer from a reputable "real" brand. This thing is going back. Should have known not to trust a no-name computer. ASUS motherboards were the 'go to' boards back in the day, but whoever they got to throw these laptops together is doing a terrible job. If it seems to good to be true- like 2.5T storage, an i7, and lots of RAM for $1200... that's because it's not true. It won't actually function properly. What good is storage and processing when surrounded by garbage and a company that is so completely clueless? Don't fall for it. It's lipstick on a pig.

I bought this laptop for my wife for Christmas. However after working on it for several hours getting it set up the right mouse button stopped working. I tried to reset the BIOS back to the default several times and that failed. Also, I had difficulty uninstalling the bloat-ware CandyCrush. That was when the mouse button stopped working. There seems to be a conflict with the way the tablet and the mouse interact. At times the mouse will not work and you have to use the tablet to click a link This is the first ASUS I have ever been dissatisfied with.

For this price it is not worth it! This laptop had a lot of crashing issues. It is going to cost over several hundreds more to just have it ship off to be repair. No pc technician that I know of could fix it without having to replace the entire motherboard. I don't even play games on this. Mainly used for billing and watching streams and listening to music.
