I just got this laptop, hardly used it and so far , its had two viruses . the finger fad doesn't work well if at all . it doesn't keep up with your typing ! and I don't type that fast . the backlit keyboard doesn't go thru keys you have to be over them in poor lighting. sometimes when I watch something on you tube , it will automatically go to the home app page. dragon voice for me has been no response . . its weird to say the least. I am going back to best buy I am hoping the will exchange it . or let me get a different model. like the h p. same price I was thinking of getting in the first place. I have had the machine for little over a month.

I bought this laptop on sale for 800 and used a coupon that got it down to $720. I think that price fits this laptop alot better than the $1000 mark it is now. Screen: Size is nice, its thin and the bezels arent to massive. Youtube videos looks great, and colors are good. But the screen is my biggest complaint with this laptop. Since its not a matte type screen its like a mirror. Its not to bad indoors but its pretty much unusable outside in direct sunlight. I bought a matte screen protector for it the 2nd day i owned it for $12 and there is a night and day difference. Inside its perfect. outside is at least usable now. My second complaint is the brightness, i keep reaching over to check if the screen is on the max settings. Its not horrible but there really isnt to much a difference between high and low. My old toshiba i replaced with this was about twice as bright. If it was brighter using it outdoors wouldnt be so much of a issue. Keyboard: No complaints with the keyboard. Keys feel great, theres a full number pad and plenty of short cuts. The backlit keyboard is nice and bright with a few difference brightness levels. It also looks amazing at night, looks like the keyboard is made of diamonds or something. Touchpad: No complaints the sensitivity was a little high at first but turned it down a notch in windows and it works great. Even though there arent dedicated click buttons, it feels like there is. Its actually one of the better touch pads ive used in the past. Overall design: The different posses are great. Its nice to be able to move it according to what im doing. Flipping it so the keyboard is down and the screen is closer to you is great for laying in bed. The hinge feels very well made. I owned a yoga before and this feels so much more sturdier. Screen barely moves when touched and moving the hinge has just enough pressure to feel durable but not be a pain to move. Really well built. The brushed aluminim is a finger print magnet but over all give its a luxury look and feel. The back ASUS logo on the screen also lights up which just looks great at night. Weight wise, its heavy but not bad to move around. Id rather take something made out of metal and deal with a little weight. Then to have something plastic and light. It a great mix between no compromises hardware and portability. You can buy lighter laptops but you will loose something this laptop has. Speakers: They are average, fine when your in a quiet place but outside or in a busy work place they can be drowned out. The included speaker makes it better but i wouldnt bother with it. It sounds very "tin canny". One thing i do like is the speakers pretty much sound the same no matter if your in desktop mode or tablet mode. Graphics: 840m is a nice extra but its limited because of cooling. Older games run great and even some newer games do. I played borderlands the presequal at 1080p and got about 45fps. Bf4 gets 30-40fps on medium at 1080p but thats where it goes downhill. Any game that uses the CPU and GPU at the same time causes the gpu to throttle. I opened the laptop up to take a look at the cooling system and there really isnt much there to keep everything cool while gaming. CPU and GPU are hooked up to the same copper pipe, which is cooled by one fan. The problem is that fan is suffocated by the back of the laptop. There are no vents or holes near the fan to get it fresh air. So temps shoot up and at 70c the gpu throttles down to the half way mark. You will go from 45fps to 20fps after just a few minutes. I ran a test with the back of the laptop off and temps were a good 15c lower. The gpu throttled a little here and there but made demanding games playable. Optical drive is a nice touch and can be switched for a bluray, or taken out and used as a secondary hard drive. I plan to add a bluray player for movies. 1TB hard drive is nice, but its only 5200rpm and its slow. Should have atleast been 7200rpm, but can be switched to a SSD which i plan on doing. Battery life: Normal battery life ive seen is about 5 hours. Said 8 at bestbuy but ive yet to come even close to that. Power saver gets you to 5, balanced gets you about 3.5-4.5, high performance gets you about 3. Gaming wise on battery you get a little over a hour. Battery life might be better, but since the screen isnt very bright 99% of the time you will have it on max. Over all for the price i paid its a great laptop. Getting an i7, dedicated graphics, 1TB hdd, 15.6 in 1080p screen, backlit keyboard a name brand, and the flexibility is hard to come by for under a grand. Its a good laptop for 1k, but I would wait till bestbuy has a sale and drops it down to $800. With the screen and gpu complaints i feel like that is the price to pay. It seems to hit the price atleast once a month too. So be patient.

First, the backlight for the keyboard should have been any other color BUT white. The keys are silver, so when lit, you can't see the characters clearly. Second, I have had this computer for only 1 month, and the space bar already squeaks every time it is pressed - a high pitched, annoying squeak which sends a chill up the spine. Third, at the beginning of week 4 it kept dropping the Internet connection and required a hard re-boot to re-establish the ability to connect, but the last three days (the end of week 4) it won't connect at all. I would have brought it back to Best Buy sooner, but I am at school and won't be home for a few more days. It is hard for me to do my homework without the Internet, and with an annoying distracting squeak at every space. It is also a disappointment that I cannot use the backlit feature because, yes, I still peek at my fingers when I type, so I had to disable the feature to use the keyboard.

The Geek Squad protection is a must for this. It's in for the second time in 5 months because of the fan quitting. Hopefully the problem will be fixed and taken care of, not just "repaired" again.

To comment on reviewer "diehard" 1}Screen quality: Doesn't look HD at all. Even with the brightness turned all the way up, the screen is very dim. WRONG: Display is crisp and clear! 2}Mouse: The mouse is a disaster. It's one solid pad and trying to right click is extremely frustrating. Pad sensitivity (or lack thereof) makes it difficult to surf the web. WRONG: Touchpad is very responsive and has the same design as 99% of laptops! 3}Keyboard: It's backlit, but the design is horrible. Unless you are staring directly down at the keyboard, all you can see is the light coming from underneath the keyboard. Terrible design. WRONG I have tried many laptops with backlit keyboards and this one is too bright on default. So, I found the settings for it and turned it down! 4}Performance: This computer has an i7 processor yet it is extremely sluggish. Websites load slow, page navigation is clunky. WRONG: The Chrome browser is fast. My guess is "diehard" has a slow internet connection? The performance of other applications and games that meet the recommended specs of this laptop run great! 5)Weight: This thing is ridiculously heavy. It's metal and feels durable, but for the price I would expect to not feel like I'm hauling around a bowling ball. WRONG: The aluminum case make it run cooler. No one lied about the 4.87 lbs stated in the desciption. No one said this was an ultrabook!! 6}Even the charger sucks! It's a giant block that prevents other items from being plugged into the socket. WRONG: The block design left me guessing also until I plugged it into the middle of a full powerstrip. By easily fitting there I don't have a powerbrick laying around! 7)Sound: Speaker system is sub=standard. It comes with an attachable speaker, but I don't want to have to attach and detach the speaker whenever I want to move the laptop. WRONG: The sound is quite acceptable. The subwoofer was a surprise but for the few times I might need it is good. I definitely think this laptop is a winner!!!! .

Here is a few pros and cons for what seems like a really well built 2 in 1 overall: pros: the screen is quite nice. it doesn't experience LCD distortion at off viewing angles, although it does experience backlight fading at off angles which is common with a lot of models from what i've seen. but a very good screen overall. overall, everything seems like good quality with the unit and I don't think you can go wrong with it, but I'm going to list a few things that I wish were a little better The sound is actually really good when the included external speaker is plugged in. It still seems better than average without using it. neutral: The unit is as heavy as any full size 15.6 laptop, so if your primarily looking to use it as a tablet I would recommend something a good deal lighter since it can get awkward to hold because of its weight. I wish that laptops in this price range would move beyond a 5400rpm hard drive. Unfortunately it's still very common. I might upgrade the unit at some point. The backlightligting gets dimmer at off angle viewing. See this with a lot of other ips screens so not really that bad. cons: the silver colored keys I think are a bit annoying, and still get backlight bleed from under the edges of the keys. Was hoping the backlight bleed was something that all manufactures would have remedied by 2015, apparently not. I'm sure this is an issue with a lot of other makes and models though, so can't be too down on asus for it. The optical drive should be blueray capable, and at least play them. Kind of makes me wish they would have left it out and made the unit thinner and lighter conclusion: I have experience with quite a few different windows 8.1 laptops and I will say that this one is one of the most impressive yet. One thing with the windows laptops i've noticed is they all have their quirks, and you won't find one that's perfect, so it's just a matter of finding one with the specs you want that you can tolerate and enjoy. macs have their own quirks and I like the touchscreen functionality of the windows. This laptop 2 in 1 has impressed me with its build quality even though it has its own set of quirks, but I can fully recommend it at this point-- I don't think you can go wrong, and for the price BB has it at I don't think you will find better specs or quality
