Great Gaming Router.

So I bought this router a few days ago, I am coming from the ASUS RT-AC87R which I had so many issues with, very buggy FW. I really did not want to try another ASUS router since I had so many bad experiences with a few ASUS routers. I took the chance again, set up was very easy and simple, pretty much the same settings I have been using with my old Asus router. Now I tried Melin FW first to see how it would run, go to http://www.snbforums.com/forums/asus-ac-routers-adapters.47/ if you do not know what that is.
Merlins FW was a bit buggy so I decided to try the Asus FW 380.858, its a new FW that Asus released this month. The Fw is very stable not many issues other that the GUI will act a bit funny sometimes.
Now to the gaming part of this router, It has 2 new features that Asus has introduced, the bad part of this is that there is really no info on how this tech works, its not in the manual and I cant find nothing on the web. This router has the adaptive QOS feature and also this game boost, proceeded to set up the QOS and also set up the game boost, very simple to do. Now there is a feature called WTFast, which seems like good tech, seen some videos on YT about, the only thing is at the moment it does not support consoles yet, its still in beta, but it will in the future. Noe the game boost is a one click option ethier on or off, simple.
Now I play on my ps4 and started to set up its own staic ip and put it in the dmz, thats my set up. In my house hold there is a total of 3 ps4, 2 gaming rigs and about 10 other devices.
Right off the bat I noticed that my ps4 was getting low numbers whe I ran a speedtest using the ps4 test option. I have TWC 300 down 20 up, on my ps4 with my old ac87r I would get 45 to 50 down and 10 to 15 up. With this new router I am getting 10 down to 5 up, big diffrence, I double checked my settings but still it was giving me these low speeds.
I decided to start playing bf4 and right of the bat I noticed something was very different, the game was running very smoothly, I mean I have not had games like I had in months, we all know how buggy bf4 is. So I played about 10 games and it was very smooth. Decided to play bo3 and I wanted to check my NAT, it was open which is really good for that game as I have been told. Know the big suprise was that all 3 ps4 with bo3 all had open NAT??? I know decided to download a digtal game, I figured that it will take at least a few hours to do that since I was showing low download speeds. I decided to download shadows of mordor, thats a big download. Well it took me 18 mins to download the game, Uinstalled BF4 and redownloaded it again and that took only 25 mins with all its dlc too.
I really do not know what this router is doing with this game boost but it seems to be working great for gaming. The router provides great coverage thru out the house, 1850sqft house, no wifi drops and can have mutiple device streaming at the same time with no issues.
Now Asus also has this model RT-AC88U, the only diffrence is the red anntenas and that it has 8 Lan ports, everything else under the hood is the same, just wanted to put this out there. Get this router if you are a gamer its well worth the money.

Installed last week, very easy to do. Everything runs great for about 2 weeks and now I have the 5Ghz issue that everyone complains about. Wont connect, drops out, 2.4Ghz runs fine. I'm not going to fool with it, just going to return it and go back to my Netgear R6400 for now.

Powerline networking and hard cables weren't an option for us and we've been suffering with a so-so Netgear wireless router for about 3 years now. Finally, I decided it was time to step up to something better and this unit exceeded my expectations.
After about 15 minutes of setup I swapped it in for the old router and, in my office, which is literally on the other side of our house, my data rate went from about 12-14mbps to 127mbps. More importantly, the 1 to 3 second dropouts, where I was getting no data rate at all, are gone.
Pros:
- Easy setup (just make sure you're really connected to your ISP before you run it)
- Very powerful (no signal strength issues here)
- Fast enough to serve at least three high load connections simultaneously
Cons:
- Expensive for a dual-band unit
Bottom Line: If, like me, you had a persistent issue with uneven bandwidth and spotty connections, this may be the solution you've been looking for.

I bought this because I wanted a better upgrade for my online gaming. Sadly this falls way short. I experience lag spikes on several gaming platforms and had to port route to at least make it workable.
FYI the WTFast included is a joke. While my old router was technically slower it never experienced latency issues. Good for TV WIFI etc.. Sucks for gaming.

My old router was a ASUS and I was really happy with it, especially the app to control the router.
I wanted to stick ASUS. I ordered online and had nothing but problems when I tried to setup. Did the steps multiple times. It would not connect to the internet. Eventhough I could see that I had a WAN ip address, kept telling me the internet was disconnected. I set up two older routers to make sure it wasn't my internet. Those both set up fine. Tried again and same result. I read the reviews before buying and there were mixed reviews. I read a lot of people stated they had various problems.
I might have had a bad unit, but based on the othet reviews, maybe not. I returned it to the store the next day.
Buy with caution if you want this.

I reluctantly had to replace my AirPort Extreme after years of trouble free use . The ASUS was recommended by a Best Buy consultant. Iam not a computer expert and I don’t want to be . The consultant assured me I would have no problems setting this up . This is where things did not go well . 5 hours later several calls to tech support and I was up and running. So I thought, I have had nothing but trouble with devices working sometimes and other times not working. I regret buying this and wish apple still made a router I could set up and be online in minutes . It was not my internet connection it is the router . I have problems streaming and consistently have other issues . It is located in the same spot my old router was . So , if your not an expert computer person this may not be for you .
