Original purchase malfunctioned. Received a refurbished model through Asus customer service and the 2.4 band stopped functioning. Received an additional model and the same thing happened after about 3 months. Will never buy another Asus product again

One of the two bands does not maintain connection. Multiple devices recognize the lower frequency band, but all fail to maintain connection, giving an authentication failure message. Problem persists following re-set. Will be returning the unit for refund.

For some reason I have gone through 4 routers this year with them either dying or not living up to their expectations. Typically I would go with the most expensive one, but my ever evolving wisdom has taught me that you don’t always get what you pay for.
Enter the RT-AC3100. I eventually settled for this router over two of the top of the line AC5300 variants. Why you may ask? Because it simply works and it works well. This router can be setup with the basics, or can be completely configured to do everything you need. Unless you have 40 Wi-Fi devices in your house and have something that can actually utilize the throughput of an AC5300 router you are wasting your money. Actually, if you have those type of needs you are probably looking for entry level enterprise equipment. But I digress:
The good:
-Easy setup
-Good range (covers 2000 sq/ft with perfect signal)
-Fast
-Great interface and lots of excellent settings
-Asus mobile app is wonderful
The bad:
-Wish I bought this sooner
Also, it is worth noting that this router is IDENTICAL in specs/performance to the RT-AC88U with the exception of less LAN ports, no red accents, and some of the “gamer” features are blocked out. If you need those, Google Merlin firmware.

I had this same exact router before it died so thought I'd try a new again this one in less than two weeks stopped broadcasting the 2.4G band. Firmware update didn't help its being returned. Don't but this router it's trouble.

I had to return this router after only a few days. While it worked, it had great signal range. I was very happy with it, until it suddenly stopped working. I could not even log in to it. Thankfully, Best Buy took it back and I bought a Linksys.

I originally purchased a Netgear ac 1900 with wireless extender. The whole process took 20min and the extender was barely picking up half way through my 1700sqft house.
I went back and exchanged the router and picked up the ASUS AC3100 and right out of the box the whole setup was 5min and straight forward. Everything connects fine with this system with no lag. Running XBOX One through Win10 is a breeze with no lag or disconnections. I would highly recommend this product!

This router may not be sleek or good looking ( In my opinion ) but it does everything a router should. I bought several routers trying to find a perfect one and this one was it, it's very fast, setup was simple and monitoring everything on your network is great. I'm glad I bought this monster router... Literally lol

A great deal on an RT-AC3100 came up last week, so I grabbed one. Since tons of people are having issues with the radios apparently burning up, I purchased a laptop cooler as well. The airflow rate is not as high as I expected compared to a larger one of the same brand I'm using for an HP laptop that cooks itself without it, but radio temperatures are around 50C, and CPU temperature is around 62C, so the fan seems to be working well.
My setup is pretty basic. I have all the AI stuff, QOS, and Smart Connect disabled. I have some port forwarding rules set up, and I tweaked the wifi band advanced settings a bit, but that's it.
The RT-AC3100 (F/W rev A6) soundly beat my RT-AC68U (F/W rev B1) both in near field and far field tests with my 2016 Macbook Pro (N/AC 3x3). AC link rates and measured up/down speeds both near (within 15 ft AC) and far (50+ feet N, 2.4 GHz) from the router were double or nearly double. I found that if I gave the 5 GHz band its own SSID and gave it preference over the 2.4 GHz band in my MBP wireless settings, my MBP would stay connected to AC in the long range tests, and in those cases, speeds were quadruple compared to what my RT-AC68U would do in those locations on N, 2.4 GHz. This is quite different than what I expected would happen when trying to use AC at a longer range.
Network responsiveness feels improved with the RT-AC3100 as well even in areas of the house with strong signal strength.
Bottomline is that it whomped my RT-AC68U in performance, so as long as the RT-AC3100 remains stable, and a radio doesn't cook itself, I'll be quite happy with it.

5.0 GHz works like a champ. 2.44 GHz is unreliable and consistent drops my smart devices. Not worth it. Apparently, this is a known issue that they haven't fixed
