Great router, lived up to expectations

I upgraded my internet service to 200Mbps. But I was only getting about 90. It was determined that the fault was a router, I had a Netgear 600. So, I bought this Asus3100 router. Did it perform? Somehow I am getting, at times 210Mbps, MORE than the maximum promised me! And I have the router crowded in between a wall and a desk. My laptops never get less than 190. My tablets sometimes underperform at about 90, but that stupid android tablet has performance issues independent of internet. All told, I am absolutely thrilled at this router. Oh, I used to have trouble at times setting up routers. This one simply asked me to choose a password, and set up everything automatically, it couldn't be simpler.

First one was a bust...2nd one seems okay.

I had trouble with the first one of these I bought, I took it back, and got this one (same model). It was a replacement for my Netgear R8000 I thought might have been going bad after two years of continuous use. I was having trouble with service drops and speeds with my setup and I didn't know if it was the router or the provider. We have wireless broadband as we live out in the sticks, (5MB down/1MB up...it's either that or DSL with a 1.5MB down "best speed...ugh!), and it seemed to be okay for online MP FPS games on my PS4, while the rest of the house was Amazon Fire-ing, or Netflix-ing. Then I started having lag issues and drops. I needed to troubleshoot, so I bought this as a suitable and comparable replacement to try. It seemed to perform about the same as my Netgear. Some minor things were better, some not as good. It's very close in comparison. But the one thing I did notice is that it seemed to drop out more frequently than the Netgear was at the time. It was almost like the Asus is a bit more sensitive to issues on the provider's side. I kept getting DHCP errors with the provider showing up in the logs, where the Netgear didn't nearly as often. So, after a couple of weeks fighting with it, and my provider, I switched it back to the Netgear. I've had to do some travelling and my wife was tasked with dealing with our internet provider, which it turns out there were indeed problems with. And, she didn't need to deal with swapping between routers and such. The user interface such as QoS and forwarding ports was good and easily navigable as well as the parental controls and time scheduling. I couldn't tell if it was really doing a very effective job with the QoS as I tried to prioritize the gaming consoles over everything else, but did see issues while having high traffic in the house. That could just be due to the service we have though. I also like the fact that there are third-parties that provide firmware you can download for it rather easily. Range of the wireless seemed to be on par with the Netgear and wasn't too bad considering it's in the basement office and we have a large two-story house. Sometimes the signals upstairs is not too great. I plan to reinstall it when I get more time, and see if it's any better now that the internet isn't as much of a problem causer, but it seemed to be just fine, or at least just as good as the Netgear.

    WiFi Connectivity is Horrible

I bought this router (about a month ago) to replace my netgear R7000 nighthawk, because that was dropping my wifi signal, too. That device and this asus unit, both keep dropping my wifi connection to all of my devices. I plugged directly into the ethernet port on this asus unit and I did not have any connectivity issues. However, I cannot plug all of my devices into the router, so if the wifi doesn't work, this product is nothing more than a paperweight. I upgraded the firmware to Asuswrt-Merlin, and that seems to have fixed the issue. If you are not familiar with computers/networks/routers then I would not buy this router. It should work as is, right out of the box, and not force users to find open source firmware that will make it work?! This unit is one of the most expensive routers Best Buy sells! So, in this instance you will NOT get what you pay for! Oh, and the What the fast service built into the device does not work. It was free, but now you have to pay for it. I tried to open a free account, and when I clicked on the submit button nothing happened!? The free account set up option does not work. If you do lot of pc gaming with servers outside of the u.s. then this may help you. Check out their website and decide for yourself. Next router I am going to by will be a linksys. I never thought that having a stable wifi connection would prove to be so difficult. fyi: total wireless devices that need to be connected are between 10-15 devices at any one time, and sometimes all at the same time. So, you can read all the reviews you want, as I did on this product and spend a lot of money thinking that it will work as described, and yet, still, you will be disappointed. Spend 300 bucks and see the end result for yourself.

    Nice upgrade

Upgraded from the Nighthawk X8 to this product. I've generally been a bit larger fan of ASUS, but I decided to try the Nighthawk. After a lackluster performance from the Nighthawk I decided to give this device a try. As with everything this brand offers it's easy to use but also it offers Advanced features that I enjoy. The radius on this is quite large and will cover anyhow for the most part. It covers all 2000 square feet of my house on both floors. And also extends to the front yard backyard and slightly around the corner.

    Great router

I got this because of the increasing amount of wireless devices I have in my house hold. It is working great at providing a fast and reliable connection to the internet. It is a bit of an eye-sore, but it was easy to integrate into our home without being noticed too much. Bottom line, if I had to pick between having a spaceship looking router and good connection or having unreliable, slow connection... I'm picking the spaceship.

I am super happy with my new Asus AC3100 router! I didn't know what I was missing out on before, this improved my home internet to give it 10 times quicker speeds, literally. Ran speed tests prior and this new router blew it away! Worth the cost! I have a lot of electronics connected and having the dual bands on it is amazing! Was also very easy to set up! Would recommend to everyone!

My previous router was Asus, and knowing how easy it was to setup and configure, led me to get this router. Setup was a breeze, router did came with a CD - did not need it. Router's web interface is clean, easy to use and configure. The parental feature is easy to configure. Range is excellent, no dead spots in my 2,500 sq ft house.

Wow! Lightning fast and setup was a snap. Upgraded from a Linksys AC2400 that died in three days. This ASUS RT-AC3100 is doing some serious routing. We had several devices playing movies and a League of Legends game going at the same time. Performance has been awesome.

While pricey, this router is superior to anything I have used. It has port forwarding, game mods, access via app and a superior browser interface. The range and speed on this is second to none! Nice packaged, too. 5-star router!

Avoid the Asus 3100 if you want ASUS firmware

Bought this router June 2018 and configured it, but it went back into the box until February 2019. Several times a day the wireless will disconnect my laptop and rejoining the network doesn't work. And often the admin page will not load over wifi while it will (usually) work over wired using the same device and browser. I've done some tuning on the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands to rule out wifi interference since I'm downtown in a city. No good. And sometimes it takes several reboots or extended power off time (minutes vs an off for 30 seconds and back on) to get the router and its wifi networks to all work again. I have it not doing DHCP services (a system on my LAN does) and only use this device as the uplink to my ISP and as a “dump switch” for the LAN since it has GB ports. (Easier than going to WAP mode and then configuring another system as the uplink gateway.) I have zero of the extra features enabled: port forwarding, upnp, guest networks, DMZ, usb apps, AI Cloud, game boost, QoS, AI Protect, and VPN are all off. Load on the device itself appears fine using ssh to the router and using Linux tools to query logs, load, etc. Can only say the firmware is appears to be far less than good because the chipsets it uses are rated very good by Linux communities (this router runs Linux). Also, the admin page lacks basic features such as wifi scanning, plus doesn't always function properly (LAN port traffic is getting counted as being on the wifi port if you check via the connected clients screen0 and the gui very often doesn't load correctly. Boot/reboot time for the device is also beyond terribly slow; think late 90s PC startup time: ridiculous for an embedded device. As for my experience level with networking devices: I've worked as systems engineer and as part of network security teams for enterprises. I really wanted a decent selection of available features and easy to use (set it up and forget about it) router, and this one is far less stable than an old TP-Link I bought a decade ago for $30.

Plan was to eliminate the need for multiple routers to cover my large home. The Asus has met that requirement, providing very fast performance (in excess of gigabit speeds) to compatible devices in the ground floor rooms near the router and acceptable performance (300'ish mbps) on the second floor and farther away from the unit. The only connectivity issue I've seen were ones that existed with machines connecting to other routers also (like my Macbook dropping the 5ghz link for some odd reason). It's an expensive router but it's eliminated a second router and signal booster from my network while significantly improving connection speeds at far flung locations in the house.

I bought this in 2020 because I have been a long time ASUS fan. It worked fine at first, then issues arised with connectivity. Constant latency, constant connectivity issues, and a very poor ability to maintain a connection with mesh extenders. Finally, the nail in the coffin. Attempted to do a firmware upgrade, but now all of a sudden, I cannot access the router interface at all. Not through the web browser and not through the app. Upon login, it just times out or spins. What is going on ASUS? You pay this much money for a router that wasnt worth the price, slap a paultry 2 year warranty on it, and then cant even get the thing right? Yeah, I am going to have SO MUCH fun factory resetting this stupid thing and restoring my entire network. I guess this is what happens when you have lackluster standards. Dear ASUS, this will be the last product from you I ever buy.

    Flawless execution for our apartment

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Our apartment is quite long, with many nooks and crannies, so we required a router that would reach them all. We originally went with a TP-Link OnHub, but began experiencing very frustrating disconnects from online games, regardless of whether on WiFi or Ethernet. So, we returned the OnHub, did some research, and have been totally impressed with our choice. The Asus RT-3100AC gives our apartment full WiFi signal strength while also providing a hub for us to share files via the USB 3.0 Flash Drive we have attached to it. We experience no lag, no disconnects, nothing! Not even when we are all gaming at once or streaming. This router has certainly brought life into our gigabit ISP, as well as our home network.
