Asus - Worst Customer Support I've Experienced

I own a number of Asus products and have found them to be (on-average) a good choice. Recently, I purchased the RT-AC3100 router for several reasons - with one being the USB port and the capability to connect a USB hard drive as a file share. It works fine on all my Win10 systems but it does not work on Win7 systems as well. I contacted Asus tech support on 2 Nov and today is 30 Nov and still no explanation or a fix. I have about a dozen email exchanges with them with each saying this has been kicked up to level 2 support. In researching the problem, I did find a work-around but more importantly, the issue is Asus's lack of Tech Support. For some insight you may want to read this article: https://consumerist.com/2008/07/16/10-secrets-to-getting-better-tech-support-from-asus/ The article is dated and I would have thought Asus would have corrected this by now but apparently not. It offers an insiders view on why their tech support and warranty repair is such a mess. I'm experiencing the same issues as the article explains. If I just parroted the article, it would read as just a sour grapes review. The person that wrote the article wasn't complaining but rather explaining what happens in the tech support process. That article and my own experience has made me a believer.

Another Asus router bites the dust.

Went through two 3100's in less than 3 years. When it work it gave me fantastic range and great speeds but did not last . The first lasted A little a over a year and a half. Second one not even 3 months. Called tech support several times and tried a few changes in the GUI but didn't work. Love there quality laptops but they are dropping the ball on there router line up as far as something reliable. There are becoming quickly disposable as a cheap cup of coffee. Junk! Asus you need to step up your game in routers. Your use to be so much better and remember your not the only game in town. What a disappointment .

Great router for multiple wi-fi requiremnents

I stopped in my local Best Buy and was help by the manager of the store. I was dissatisfied with my cable company issued Modem and w-fi. Even with the extreme 50MG interne3t our downloads were slow and frequently we were disconnected. The store manager identified that with upwards of 10 devices requiring wi-fi our hardware could not provide the necessary capabilities of the high speed access. I have had this router now for 10 months with excellent results.

    AIMesh Full Home Coverage

This is the second AC3100 I've purchased to take advantage of the AIMesh functionality to create seamless wifi coverage through entire house (~3200 sq/ft). After a few weeks, we've had no issues with devices connecting to wifi from all devices (Home Security, to phones and smart TV's, etc). Rock solid router and performance and now with AIMesh a strong signal from any location in the house.

    Doesn't live up to anything

Where to start, so many issues... I bought this asus cm-32 2600 modem/router combo a little over a month ago replacing an arris modem and netgear routers, which I was very happy with, to gain and increase network speeds. Plus having just one unit in the closet using less power and wiring seemed the best route to go; WRONG! Not even a couple of days in I noticed I was not able to connect to and through WiFi any more. Turns out that for some reason the router had not only changed my modem connection (changed to vpn without setting it myself) and changed my DHCP and assigned ip addresses back to standard 192 addresses (I'm using different settings). Of course I thought I had done something and configured everything again, this time making a backup of the settings in case of. After everything was set and done I noticed a massive decrease in coverage on 5G (mimo activated) just 25' away while 2.4G was still strong at full coverage. Isn't 5G supposed to be better and stronger with mimo? Oh well, back to 2.4G it is then. The interface of the firmware is slow as molasses in February, in Alaska! Don't be in a hurry thinking to change something real quick because that is just not going to happen. If you do not add /index.asp after your ip address it will constantly take you to the guided setup wizard; major annoyance to me. You can create a bookmark but I really don't want another bookmark in my face. Traffic: it keeps track of your traffic, in and out so it is nice to see how much data you're using (if you're on a limited plan or do some massive trafficking). Oh wait, as soon as you reboot your router it wipes everything so lost is your traffic data. You will pretty much need to log into your router on a daily basis to make sure nothing is screwed up because on random moments it will change everything again. Just when you think that backing up your settings will bail you out, of course that fails too. The backup does not backup your custom settings (assigned ip addresses, dhcp address etc.)! It may back it up but it will definitely not restore them!! Enabling DoS protection, I keep enabling it but every time I log back in it is turned off?! Port forwarding? Forget it, it never saves your settings even-though it looks like it does. Log out and log back in and you will find your list to be empty! These are all just things from the top of my head, there are more issues. One very remarkable; customer support. I complained about the router changing my settings and the reply was to check my wifi and make sure I have it secured!! WHAT?? Are there really people still not securing their wifi? Come on now... This product is definitely not production ready, the hardware looks good, it may even work good if Asus can figure out how to properly create a working firmware but until then, this is garbage. I can't believe that Comcast has put their approval on it as an official supported device! Don't buy it! You will regret it.... @Comcast/Xfinity, drop this piece of garbage as soon as possible! I'm going back to Netgear, never had problems with it, good coverage and definitely it never changed anything for me unless I did it myself!

USB ports do not work, No customer support

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

BEWARE if intending to use this router's USB ports for storage. The "USB 3.0" port is just a blue colored USB 2.0 port, not actually a USB 3.0 port. Both USB ports cannot use large drives (around 4TB) since the kernel used by this router has a 4+ year old bug that prevents the OS from being able to address large drives. Both USB ports have a maximum read/write speed of around 1.5MB/s...nowhere near the 100MB/s in the specs. While reading/writing USB storage the CPU is maxed out at 100% for both cores so no other functionality can be used (internet access). Asus customer support is no help. At first I was told these issues are "normal"...now, 2+ weeks later they have finally started to look into them. Don't bother with Asus customer support, you won't get any help unless the case is "escalated" to "Level 2"...this process takes at least a week.

This is a great router for a household that has many wireless devices. No issues with connectivity with 8+ devices using the internet at once. The AiProtection feature on this device works decent enough to protect devices that don't have anti-virus/malware software running on them.

My kids brag to their friends that they can surf the web on their computer, download and play games online with their friends and use up all my cell data all at once, the two of them, while their mom works online, and no one looses their downloads. Family harmony at last.

    Unreliable product, poor support

Bought this router to replace an older Asus router that stopped working. It was easy to setup and worked great for a few days. It started losing Internet connectivity about once a week forcing me to reset it to connect to the internet. On day 32 from purchase it locked up and was not visible on the network and would not connect to the internet. Went through trouble shooting with Asus who finally issued an RMA number. A few weeks and $20 in shipping later, I received a rebuilt router. So now I've paid full retail plus $20 for a refurbished product. It worked for a week before having the same problem. This time I took the router to Best Buy to see if they would take this lemon back. The Lafayette, LA store manager, Mark, refused to do anything to help. He stated we were not out of any money since we can return to asus. Guess he doesn't consider $20 shipping as money plus the additional time without a product we paid almost $300 for. Poor customer service from both Best Buy and Asus. Don't recommend this product or this store. It's online for me from now on.

Replaced a bad Apple Airport router with this unit. Lost 75% of my internet speed. wired and wireless. Pay for 100mbs from provider and PC directly to cable modems gets speeds around 75-80mbs. Through the the Asus router hard wired getting about 15mbs and 2-5 Mbps wireless. Spent 30 minutes waiting for Asus support and another 25 minutes trying several things and support recommended returning the router stating it must be defective.

You would think for $250 this router would be great, however, it’s not. I’ve had this router for only a week and the internet has disconnected TWICE. Reset the router the first time, and it connected back no problem. I’ve been up since 6:30 am trying to reconnect to the internet as I’m typing this. It’s now 8:30. For 2 hours I’ve been trying to connect back to the internet & its just not working. Tried all the troubleshooting steps & nothing. I am using this through my ISP, and I sometimes feel like they purposely mess with your router to make you go back to their service. Anyway, will be returning this router to go with a brand that’s not ASUS. This router is just flat out atrocious.

I did extensive research being a network admin. I had high hopes for this router to cover a larger home. I ran into issues with the second floor not even able to see the 5ghz band on one machine. Those that did see it on the second floor had 1 bar on 5ghz and 2 bars on the 2.4ghz. There was also an issue with the latest firmware where clients would just disconnect and reconnect in the client list. I called tech support and was on hold for 53 minutes before disconnecting as they checked on the issue. Clients didn't seem to drop packets, but definitely saw latency when this occurred. I am returning and going to try the wireless mesh technology as that should cover the home no problem. A router in this price range should have fulfilled my needs, big let down. Keep in mind this is the same model as the AC-88U, just 4 less switch ports.
