Complete garbage and waste of money
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Probably the worst purchase I’ve ever made. Bought this for school and it stopped working randomly 2 weeks later in the middle of a masters exam. Complete nightmare and garbage laptop. Do not buy this thing. Best Buy employees told me later that it’s trash as well.

The next step in Chromebooks!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Asus CM1402 Chromebook 14" laptop has a MediaTek Kompanio 520 processor, a 64 Gb emmc drive, 4 GB ram, 100 GB of cloud storage, a full HD display and a battery rated at 15 hours. There are a number of bonuses offered with the laptop including 3 months of You Tube Premium, Minecraft Realms, Story Blocks for Lumafusion, a 12 month trial of Gemini Advanced and others. It has been tested and certified to a military toughness standard and has a splash resistant keyboard. The Chromebooks I have used in the past have been slow performers with poor graphics. I have kept them around for my kids and grandkids to use so that I will not have to let them use the computers that I use and depend on. This Chromebook is the first I have used that feels and responds like a regular computer. This is something I would be comfortable using for my daily tasks. Everything I have used it for has happened as it would on my high-end laptop. I have read, but not yet tried, that Microsoft 365 now works with Chromebook. I have had some reservations about Chromebooks small drives and dependance on cloud storage. I tend to happily use cloud storage for backup but not to replace having needed data on my computer. This Chromebook has a micro-USB port which has allowed me to install a 512 GB Micro-USB card with the information I need to have with me and room to spare. To me, ASUS has taken a giant step forward in the world of Chromebooks in that this seems to be a valid replacement for full blown computers and at a fraction of the cost to boot!

Really Useful, Clear Crisp Picture
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I thought this Chromebook would be handy to have in the living room when I wanted to look something up or check my email. Surprisingly, I use this ASUS Chromebook more than expected. It’s very lightweight. The picture is clear and crisp. I find myself watching hours of dog videos before I realize I’ve done it. What I find pleasantly surprising is the battery is still almost fully charged. I’ve had the ASUS Chromebook out for a week and it’s still 75% charged. Setup was easy. Turn it on and it walks through the process. What I particularly liked about the setup is each screen I went through had a lot of white space. That means you can focus on the actual item being asked during setup and move through the screens quite quickly. You will need a Google account (think gmail) during setup. The keyboard has a nice feel. The mouse pad is fast and responsive. The Chromebook did come with a plug-in mouse. I was surprised with how easy to use and productive the Google apps were. I put together a presentation with the “Slides” app in 10 minutes. “Notes” made it easy to keep track of my shopping list and errands I needed run. All in all, I think I will get much more out of this ASUS Chromebook then just email checking and internet surfing.

It’s a chrome book you know what your getting
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ok as the title says it’s a chrome book you already know what you’re getting. Chromebook’s are affordable and convenient when you need something on the go bigger than a phone or tablet. I have had many Chromebook’s as well as my two kids. This one has a bigger screen than I’m used to at 14 inches which was a nice upgrade from the usual 11 inches. Those 3 inches really do make a huge difference. As far as the screen quality goes it’s still kinda meh. Not bright and really not optimal for outside sunny days. Once again it’s a Chromebook so you know what you’re getting. Standard chromebook keyboard track pad as well. So far I’ve had a few issues with it and they aren’t issues all the time which is why I dropped it only one star. The camera will randomly freeze during a call or even drop it all together. Not always but enough to be annoying and I’ve only had it a couple weeks. Second thing is the WiFi is really strong one minute and the next no connection at all. It’s not the WiFi because this has happened multiple locations. Other than that it does what I would expect it do and is still a a good travel companion most of the time.

Sturdy but weak starter Chromebook
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The CM1402 is a decent offering in the value Chromebook segment. The chassis of the device itself feels VERY sturdy and rugged for a Chromebook in this price range, and the keyboard and trackpad seem very well put together. There are a few areas of the industrial design that I wish "value" products didnt keep having to do: - The device has HUGE screen bezels, and an especially prominent lower bezel above the hinges. Lots of manufacturers have proven that this is no longer necessary on LED panels, but for some reason on ASUS and a few other manufacturers, it's almost part of the brand. - The texturing on the outer body is welcome, but the palmiest edge is a bit rough and makes the device feel almost toy-like and less comfortable for real use as a laptop or even tabletop device. When it comes to performance and experience, ChromeOS is pretty forgiving. I was excited to see how the latest ChromeOS looked on a shiny new laptop, but I was unfortunately pretty disappointed quickly: - The MediaTek Pompano processor felt sluggish even on ChromeOS - Even compared to other value Chromebooks I've tested and evaluated in the last few months. This is a NEW offering, and yet, I'm left waiting for dialog boxes to appear and it just felt sluggish clicking around - I love that it has software updates until sometime in the 2030s at this point, but by then, how slow and awful will this thing feel if its this bad today?? - The screen - Where to begin - Its a 1080P full HD display, but it is a poor-quality TN panel with BAD brightness, terrible contrast, and washed out colors - In fact the hardest thing to stomach was the fact that ChromeOS has gone to a lighter, gray-er "light mode" in the past year or two as its default UI, requiring you to switch to "dark mode" to get the toolbar and menus to go back to their native "dark grey/black" color as was the norm on ChromeOS beforehand. On this screen, the contrast and color depth are so bad you can't tell some of the "gray" shades apart, and it all looks white, or white-like, as there's no true white on a display this dim. I know this is a "value segment", but LED panels that offer WAY better contrast and color, if not better brightness can be found on similarly (or even less expensive) competitors. - Sound is very much the same story - Better sound with less tinny audio can be found in this price range. It was adequately loud, but as the volume increased the quality did not follow. At the end of the day, there's not much more to write about it. It looks and feels solid, but is a poor performer that might still be a good value for someone looking to spend so little on a computing device, or someone who doesn't care about image quality, sound or typing experience. Shop around if you're looking for ChromeOS basics for a basic price, as ASUS continues their tradition of low end experience on the low end of their market.

Value Packed Chromebook, Gets the Job Done
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.SUMMARY: If you are looking for a chromebook, the ASUS Chromebook CM1402 14" Laptop hits the sweet spot for minimal budget and enough performance in an attractive robust package with a full HD screen (i.e good value). With those caveats in mind, I was impressed and happy with it for light use. PROS: - Easy to set up, Easy to turn on, Easy to use. - 1920 x 1080 screen, with resizable fonts - Reasonable speakers for videos - Decent travel on the keyboard - Uses almost any USB C charger (larger than a phone) - WIFI 6, Bluetooth - Micro SD card slot - Lightweight (3.2 lbs) - Attractive, premium appearance - Screen folds down all the way behind the keyboard, flat. A MATTER OF TASTE: - Slick dark gray finish, I liked it. - Reasonable battery life, I got a day’s use of work out of it. - Ok webcam for video conferencing (720 p). - The screen is best for indoors, not bright enough for outside (250 nits). Colors are muted. - Wired USB Mouse included. - Minimal ports (2 USB-C 3.2, 1 USB-A, headphone jack, micro-SD card slot) - Medium sized keypad - Not backlit keyboard (but consider the price) - Not a touch screen (but consider the price) - 4Gb ram means you must manage ram. - 64 Gb storage means you will store to the cloud. CONS: - It’s Google, not a full featured laptop (sorry, a bit of humor, but it is a chromebook) REVIEW CAVEATS: I want to put this review fully in context. For LESS than the price of an Apple iPad 13” Pro KEYBOARD (not the iPad, but the keyboard alone) you get in the Asus Chromebook a device with a robust laptop form factor, decent keyboard, responsive trackpad, usable 1080 p screen, that easily connects to the internet. It has a number of other features and specs to go over, but that's the bottom line, with the Asus Chromebook you are getting more than you paid for it, which is a fully usable entry level device. The flip side of that is, you aren’t paying a lot, so don’t expect it to have the best specifications and capable of heavy lifting or full-on gaming. The second thing I want to say, it should be obvious, but this is a chromebook that locks you in to Google, not a full featured laptop. Some people don’t like that. But this review is not to show the differences with full laptops or tablets but compare oranges to oranges. If you don’t know if you want a chromebook, I suggest you explore that further. THE FORM FACTOR: Let’s dive in. It’s light (3.2 lbs), plastic, but feels robust enough to shove into your backpack (which I did numerous times and carried around no problem). Not sure I would call it ‘thin’, but for the price it was. I am not one to care about fingerprints (the thing gets used after all), but it does reasonably well considering its dark gray finish (typically a fingerprint magnet). The screen is bright enough for inside use but the colors are muted at best. You could adjust font size to fit your eyes, from the very small for a lot of ‘desktop space’ or big to read from across the table. I liked the keyboard, decent travel. I found it to be easy on the eyes as well, sharp looking, and easy to pick up and carry. Easy to use. STREAMING: Yes, it streams well. I see some reviewers commenting on buffering. It does have a minimum amount of RAM (4 Gb), but I found if you managed your RAM by not having a lot of ram hungry tabs open, then I had no issues streaming at HD resolution. No stuttering. My biggest complaint is the muted screen colors, this is not going to replace your primary movie viewing device. GAMES YOU ASK?: If I said, ‘no’, someone would bring up solitaire card games. So yes, you can play basic games with it, but you won’t be running Fortnite. This really isn’t even good for casual playing, unless you like card games. But that’s not what chromebooks are for. PRODUCTIVITY: If you are talking about email, google apps for writing and report generation, internet research, web browsing, then yes it handles those fine. If you are talking about high level Photo/Video editing, then no, it’s not really meant for that. WHO WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS FOR?: If you like Google, and you don’t mind being locked into their ecosystem, then this is a good entry level machine for younger children/students that gets the basics done. For older students or adults, I can easily recommend this as a secondary device for casual or remote use. If you need a daily driver for heavy work or advanced studies, I recommend saving an additional $300 and looking at some of Asus’s value laptops in the $600 range for more storage, brighter screens, and software flexibility. Likewise, if you want a gaming machine or something for advanced photo / video editing, this likely will frustrate you. But judging and using it for what it is, a chromebook I have no hesitation to give this one five stars. I think it really is the sweet spot for budget and performance. If you want more, you will have to pay more, but at that point I would ask why a chromebook?

Excellent Choice for Work and Fun
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I think my new ASUS Chromebook is a pretty decent Chromebook even though it has pretty much the basic components needed for it to run well. Here are a few things I wanted to share with you why I think so. Let's look at the specifications first: The ASUS Chromebook CM1402 features a bright 14" screen with FHD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 format, TN, Anti-glare display, which is also LED Backlit. It has a MediaTek Kompanio 520 SoC (with an integrated GPU), 4 GB RAM, and a 64 GB SSD (the storage could be bumped to 128GB however since most of your stuff is stored in the Cloud, I did not find 64GB to be a huge issue). Using Chrome and other apps on this ASUS was smooth as butter and with MediaTek SoC, I have never experienced any hiccups or slowdowns. I even want to say that it felt pretty snappy when I switched from app to app and from task to task. I often use this Chromebook for YouTube watching experiences, as well as Xfinity Streaming app to watch my favorite channels in the evening. Since there is an HDMI out port available, I often used it for presentations on a bigger TV screen. I also use my ASUS to work with Google Docs and manage my Photos online. As I mentioned before, it worked fine just like my Intel i7 powered notebook. I would definitely like if this Chromebook had a backlit keyboard as it is always handy in the evening when you need to work on your Word Docs in Google. All in all, I enjoy using this Chromebook, it is light weight and well designed, does not feel cheap and works well and thanks to many updates scheduled for Chrome OS, I think I will be set for years with it.

Perfect Teen Laptop Option
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My daughter got used to using a Chromebook at school, because our ISD issues them to all middle school age and up kids, and she’d been asking about getting a laptop for herself to use. Since she was familiar with ChromeOS and since I wasn’t about to spend a ton of cash on an overpowered laptop for what she needed, I picked up this new Asus 14” Chromebook and we haven’t been disappointed. First off, if you’re new to the whole Chromebook thing, it’s essentially a barebones laptop that is made to run Google’s ChromeOS. Picture running an entire OS through a Chrome window and you’ll have some idea what it’s like. They’re great because they’re less expensive than a Windows or Mac laptop, and if you’re in Google’s ecosystem, then it’s a pretty relaxed experience. My only concern was that I wanted to be able to log in with my own Google account as a local admin and then let my daughter log in with her ISD-issued Google account. Both of these worked flawlessly. I feel comfortable now that she can log into her school account and see all her Google classroom materials, emails, etc. Another nice thing is that because her school handles the permissions on what the students can and cannot access, I don’t have to worry about setting up a complicated permission list for her. If she can access it at school, then she can get to it here. If not, then it won’t work, which is what I wanted. Within the first hour of getting it set up, she was already on a Google Chat call with some friends. As a teenage girl, she was very particular about how her new Chromebook would look and work, but she was pleasantly surprised. In her own words, “it looks and feels like a more expensive laptop”. Now, let’s be clear - Chromebooks are not on the same level of performance and flexibility as a Windows laptop or MacBook. They’re designed to be power-efficient and have minimal local storage since everything is supposed to sync with your Google Drive. This is great because you can work on a document across multiple devices if needed. I think Chromebooks are great ideas for anyone who wants a low-cost device for basic web surfing, emails, or document editing. If you’re someone who wants a bit more control over how the local machine behaves, a gamer, or anyone who doesn’t already use Google services, then a Chromebook would be a waste of money. But, if you’re my teenage daughter, she loves it!

Compact and lightweight!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Asus Chromebook CM1402 is a great laptop and at only 3.2 pounds is really lightweight. It has a full HD display (1920 x 1080), 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of eMMC storage. It includes (1) USB-A and (2) USB - C ports along with a headphone jack and microphone input. It's nice to see a camera and built-in microphone as so many of these devices no longer include this feature. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery boasts a life of up to 15 hours so it should easily last a full day (or more) for most people. It offers a light and dark mode which is a nice feature. Set up was super-easy and it found WIFI networks incredibly quickly. When logged into your Google account, you're connected to Google Drive, photos, Gmail, and your calendar within minutes. The keyboard is a little frustrating/hard to use - there are no bumps on the primary keys (F key/J key) making it disorienting at first. The track pad doesn't seem as sensitive as I'd like and the clicking is pretty loud, especially if you're used to silent keys. I would rather use a mouse with this unit and they included one (I guess for people like me). I typically don't have issues with a track pad on other laptops so maybe it just takes practice/getting used to it. The color/contrast feels off - photos don't look as crisp or colorful as they do on an I-Phone or other laptops. Maybe this is a setting issue or a difference in graphics between different units. All in all, the Asus CM1420 seems like a quick, easy to use device that is great if you're a strong Google user, but it might not be as useful if you're accustomed to other platforms. For streaming, internet-based programs, email, surfing the web, and social-media it does a great job!

Nice 14" Chromebook from ASUS
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently received an ASUS CM1402CM2 Chromebook. I heard of Chromebooks before, but I’ve never used one until now. I was pleasantly surprised by it’s capabilities and quality, especially considering the price. This Chromebook has a 14 inch display. It's is equipped with 4gb of RAM and 64gb of EMMC storage. It has WiFi6(11ax) 2*2, Bluetooth, 1 USB3.2A port, 2 USB3.2C ports, a headphone jack and a Micro SD slot. The display has a resolution of 1536 x 864. It is running version 126.0 of the Chrome OS. I inserted a 256gb Micro SD card to add lots of storage space for my files. It loaded most of my extensions from my Desktop copy of Chrome and pulled in all of my bookmarks. I found it relatively easy to maneuver around Chrome OS. Using the Play Store, I was able to load a number of my favorite apps and was up and running quicker than I had expected. The use of the Right Click took some getting used to, since there are no right and left click buttons. To do a right click you have to tap the touchpad with 2 fingers or press the Alt key while clicking the pad with one finger. There are a number of keys that are standard on a Windows laptop that are not on Chromebooks. It takes a while to learn and remember all of the keyboard combinations that you have to use to get basic functions done such as Caps Lock, End, Home, Del ,F11, and F12. Using the Chromebook will take a bit to get used to, but I like it. It has a nice feeling keyboard. The touchpad is very responsive and the video runs smoothly. I have no issues streaming videos in YouTube and MineCraft runs as you would expect it too. For those in the market for a Chromebook, I recommend you look at the ASUS CM1402CM2.

DO NOT BUY - Customer Service is a JOKE!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Product arrived damaged. Screen would cut out when the lid was adjusted.. was told the item would be replaced and then without telling me - the replacement got cancelled. Then, I proceeded to spend the next 4.5 hours on texting and talking on phone with people who could not help me get a replacement. I kept being told to wait for a refund and repurchase - but the product is not on sale any more. After bringing this to them I was told I could get it replaced for the same $139.00 - but no one was able to help me complete that order. So I have no computer still. Customer Service is a joke through Best Buy. I will never shop here again.

Do not purchase *any* type of chromebook
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this Chromebook from Best Buy back in 2023. Had I read the reviews, I would not have purchased this item. First, since it's a Chromebook everything you do is in the cloud which is fine, but somehow the Best Buy employee never mentioned that plugging in things like a scanner is prohibited. I returned the scanner, but wasn't very happy with the purchase and was outside the return window. So far, the only thing that works is a printer. Fast forward to a year later and the keys started falling off the keyboard and now I can't use the up/down arrows since there aren't any keys to press--it's so very annoying! The price is what attracted me, but had I known I wouldn't be able to use Microsoft Products or external peripherals I most certainly would not have purchased.
