Upgraded Chromebook for casual users
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good, basic Chromebook for casual use. The build is sturdy and there is very little flex in the hinge or chassis. The 14 inch footprint is large enough to be confortable to use, but still small and lightweight enough to carry to work or school and the sturdy build feels strong enough to withstand the wear and tear of travel. The screen is bright with good resolution. Videos look great, even in less than ideal lighting conditions. With 8GB of RAM, it's more than fast enough for most office or school tasks. Paired with the Celeron i3 processor, this Asus Chromebook is a step up from cheaper options. While the RAM and hard drive aren't able to be upgrades, the bump in RAM, higher end processor, and 128gb hard drive will somewhat "future-proof" this Chromebook if being used by its target audience, which is clearly students or those with light computing needs. Basic documents, spreadsheets, and presentations are easy to create and edit. Videos play smoothly. Thisnis obviously not made for video games or multimedia editing, but for casual use, this Chromebook is a winner

Decent, but comes with compromises
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is a mixed bag - but if the things that matter the most to you are great battery life and a good screen, this should be a great fit for you. THE GOOD I've been using this laptop as my second device at work and to browse & stream at home in the evenings, and it's made it through every day without needing to be charged (10+ hours). Since you don't ever really need to push a Chromebook hard, I'd imagine almost any use case would get the same battery life, or even better (my office has a window and I need to keep the brightness pretty high in the morning until the sun is up). This screen is also very impressive; it can get bright enough to combat the aforementioned sun, while also still looking good at dim settings. Colors are accurate and the viewing angle is nice and wide. THE AVERAGE The performance on this model is decidedly average. The first 10-15 minutes after an initial boot (especially if OS updates were just installed) are very hit-or-miss with lots of stutters and pauses. It also struggles a bit with web pages that are busy (lots of videos, ads, etc.). Neither of those things are deal breakers per se, but it is something to note. I'm not sure if the CPU is the culprit, or the fact that it only has 8GB of RAM. Other than those scenarios I pointed out, it's gotten along just fine. The other thing that is just so-so is the "Chromebook Plus" experience. This is the first time I've used a device branded this way, and I just haven't been impressed. The webcam is billed as having some extra features to improve video calls, but every call I've ran (Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams) has been grainy and not super clear. It's also billed as having some extra AI features but from what I can tell, that just means the Chromebook can generate some desktop wallpapers for you based on prompts or try to guess what sites you are about to visit and/or which documents in your Google Drive you want to open. Those features are just kind of "there". THE BAD Unfortunately, the input methods are pretty disappointing. The keyboard is not backlit, nor do the keys feel all that great when typing. The "click" is very mushy and the keys themselves are made of pretty cheap-feeling plastic. Speaking of that cheap-feeling plastic, this trackpad is not great. Because it's all plastic, the cursor tends to jump around a lot. I'm not sure why this is the case, but tap-to-click has not been great either; at least 25% of the time my taps don't register and I need to physically click the trackpad. There also doesn't seem to be any palm rejection implemented with this trackpad, as I frequently will see the cursor move while I'm typing if my palm grazes the trackpad. The other thing that's not great is the speakers - they are quiet, and have no bass and essentially no mid-level either. It's ok for spoken word & video calls, but you'll definitely want headphones. All in all, this is a decent machine, just know that there are some compromises to reach this price point. If you can deal with some sub-par input methods (or if you'll be plugging this into a dock) and don't want to break the bank, you can get some decent use out of this laptop.

Great for all things Internet
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The ASUS Chromebook Plus CX14 (CX1405) is perfect for my needs. I go between two locations and this ASUS is perfect for me to leave in the second location. It does what I need; email, banking, Instagram (got to look at the dog videos!), internet searches and streaming TV. Incredibly lightweight making it very portable. Good picture quality while streaming videos and browsing the Internet. What I love about an ASUS machine is the keyboard. The keys have a nice easy touch and there is a very slight click. I’ve used several other brands, and ASUS has the best keyboard, I think. Above the built-in webcam is a built-in privacy screen, very nice feature. So subtle you almost miss it. You can lay the screen flat with the keyboard which is kind of handy if you want to show someone across the table something. Setup was incredibly easy. Choose your language, connect to a network and then choose your account. Looks like a Google email is preferrable but at the bottom of the screen is an option for a Guest account – no email required. A Guest account doesn’t store any browsing history. It took about ten minutes to download the latest updates and restart. When back through accessing the network and logging in as a Guest. Didn’t take long before I clicked on a story about a man fishing and a polar bear when then dreaded message about your computer being infected and call the number for support. It’s a scam so I turned off the computer even though the screen says not to. The ASUS Chromebook Plus has built in virus protection and a virus software isn’t required. Maybe it was the guest account that doesn’t keep history and maybe it was the built-in virus protection, when I logged back in, no issues. Woo Hoo. The only thing I would ask of this perfect little machine is louder volume. For me, I need the volume loud!

Worlds Better Than School Issued
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was mostly interested in the Asus CX14 Chromebook Plus as an upgrade to the Chromebooks that my kids are issued through school. In my case, this is a fantastic upgrade and well worth it. The first thing you'll notice about the Asus CX14 is how much better the screen is compared to other Chromebooks. It is nice and bright, with good viewing angles. This makes it worlds better for sharing the screen while helping the kids with homework. The screen has always been one of my biggest complaints with Chromebooks, glad to see they used a good one here. The keyboard is also a significant upgrade over previously used Chromebooks. It is not a super clicky mechanical type, but it does offer a nice positive click for a membrane keyboard. The keys also have a nice texture that offers just enough grip. The trackpad functions well and is stable inside the frame. Speakers are loud enough, but do sound thin and tinny. Battery life is fantastic as you would expect from such a device. My kids are horrible about keeping this charged and it's rarely an issue with the CX14. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 still mostly comes down to the pitfalls of it being a Chromebook. Like others I've used, it still hangs up while typing from time to time, and app support is limited but improving. If you know a Chromebook is the right choice for you the CX14 is a great option.

Asus chromebook built for work and play
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Asus- CX14 14" FHD Chromebook plus Laptop with Google AI - Intel Core 3 - 8GB Memory - 128GB eMMC Misty Grey is a pretty lovely laptop with a nice amount of punch. Asus equipped the computer with an Intel Core 3 series processor, which isn't on the high end, but it does the job well. It also features excellent UHD graphics, so if you're streaming movies or just working, it does the job well. It comes with a 14-inch display. Being a Chromebook, it runs on Chrome OS, which Google powers. It comes with apps like the new Gemini as well as access to the full Google Play store. I also enjoyed the Gemini Advance and 2GB of storage with a 12-month trial. The HD 1920x1080 nano-edge display is quite nice. And when you get into the Google AI, that is like the whipped cream and cherries on the top. I also liked the YouTube Premium offer for 3 months, which was a good add-on. If you're looking for a nicely priced laptop Chromebook, check this one out. You won't be mad about it.
