Verizon recently ran FiOS to my cabin! I did some research and decided to go with the RT-AX86U. It also supports a great firmware called Asuswrt-Merlin. Loaded up Asuswrt-Merlin, did the router setup and it is working great. Strong signal everywhere (2 floors)! Streaming is smooth and web surfing is faster than my home!!!

Lights would blink then go out. If you disconnected then reconnect power it would do the power on self test and then shut down again. I could never get the 2 Gbs port to to connect from day one. Asus has given me an RMA. I could not wait for Asus, so I bought an RT-AX86s. Once the 86U comes back I will have backup. Over the years I have had several routers fail.

The speeds were great and the app is really nice. Problem is I have to reboot this router one to two times a week!!!! There are more than one issue forcing me to manually reboot . One is random devices are dropped from the router. Once I reboot they are reconnected. Another problem is loss of internet, again if i reboot it works again. Very frustrating to pay around $600 for 2 routers that don’t work consistently. Signal is not the issue because I have max bars in every room. Wish I would have went with the Eero system instead. I’m fighting this review after a failed reboot with the app , I had to physically go and reset the router high up in a closet

5Ghz is not as strong as I was hoping

Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the router hoping to add some wifi 6 into my home. unfortuneatly the 5GHz strength and speed even to my wifi 5 (wifi/AC) cclients was not as good as the wifi/ac router I was upgrading. I now had speeds in the 200 mbps range where I had 400 - 500 mbps from the older router. The router is great for the 2.5 Gig Lan if you have a gigabit internet connection. Since I don not have gigabit internet I returned this model and bought the ASUS RT-AX88U instead which is giving me much better 5 GHz performance.

Works great, it manage all the devices really well. My family didnt experience any slow down while they are watching netflix or playing on their computers. And the AI Mesh system was easy to set up and works really well with my other asus router too.

I returned a previously purchased ASUS Router because the specs of this was much better. And I have not looked back. Also the design of it allows it to stand up and take up less shelf space and that helps where I have my router located.

If you are looking for stability and flexibility in your home network, this is the router for this current generation. I ultimately updated to AXE1100, although expensive, I wanted to future proof but at a cost of a higher price. If you don't mind going 6E and non-triband, this is a solid choice.
