This router is amazing. I tried to plug it directly in my Charter modem and could not get it to work, but I pluged it in to the old wireless router I was replacing and it works great. I have a two story home with a lot of brick and even though the router is inside a cabinet I get great reception through the house and also in a small guest house 60 feet away. Plus Speed - Charter has me on a 30 Mbps plan, but with this router I routinely get 40 Mbps.

No Good Unreliable goes off line WIFI cuts out

Does not work reliably when I first got it the WIFI would drop out completely for a few seconds randomly and when I updated the Firmware I could no longer access it and had to put it in recovery mode and that did not work at first, had to try it again and manually update to the latest firmware and it still has the same problem plus anytime I change something on it even something simple like adding a guest account it goes off line and I have to put it in recovery mode and then turn it off for a few seconds and then back on and wait for it to completely reboot. I'm going to return it and get a Linksys a brand I can trust because I've had 2 Linksys Routers already and both worked great but are outdated and one got bricked by a technician at NETPHONE. I also don't like the stand. plus it gets hot like another reviewer mentioned.

    Quirky and difficult

After opening the box and connecting everything, I logged into the router through my browser to perform a firmware update. The router froze during the first attempt at a firmware update. It succeeded on the second attempt, but then the indicator lights did not work correctly. The power LED and the WAN LED (indicating connection to the internet) stopped working, even though the router was connected. The 5 GHz light was on intermittently. When I first tried to change the login info for the router, I was unable to log in using either the new username and password or the default ones and I had to perform a factory reset. The setup screens were confusing and the manual did not explain many of the settings. Finally, in the router's web interface, there was a reset button for the Wifi protected setup. When I clicked it, the router did a factory reset on itself. At that point, I gave up and decided to return the router to Best Buy. I exchanged this router for a Netgear N900 and setup was simple and quick. The Netgear gets slightly better range on the 5 GHz network as well.

    Guest Networks Rock

    Posted .

The Guest Network feature on this is fantastic. I have a home with over 12 connected devices, 2 Tivos, Iphones, tablets, Work Laptops, PS3 and a Home Office Network (printers and wireless backups). With all these connected units, privacy and networking becomes an issue. Tivos use all kind of ports, Work computers like to scan your home network, and PS3s will suck as much bandwith as their little wireless modems will let them. Not to mention all these items can be subverted by rogue software. Using the guest network feature you have, i believe, six different guest networks you can set up that you can restrict access to your personal network. So I can have Tivos which stream media on one network, PS3 online gaming on another and work laptop on yet another. None of these have access to your home network, backup or printer, and you can create unique names and passwords for each. It is all very easy to setup via the router's graphical interface. One downside I have experienced is the TIVO ports get restricted by the firewall software occasionally. I have hit the reset button every 2 weeks. For a router that on 24/7, that's probably a good thing. Two other another inconveniences where the need to upgrade the firmware immediately and the Asus support website. The website made you sign in multiple times before registering your product and looks like the typing pool from 1970 designed it. Firmware upgrade was needed to make some of the features of the router work properly. If your a true wireless environment you may have issues upgrading this. It drove me nuts that I couldn't do the firmware upgrade with a Macbook air.

Great router for home or small office.

I use this for a small home office in a large home. Great reception in every room of the house including the basement and deck. Very easy to set up. Six guest accounts are nice as I don't have to give out passwords to my network any more! 5GHz is definitely very fast and now I can take advantage of Comcast high speed network. Streaming is without interruptions for buffering. I have three computers, two tablets, printers, TV and several mobile phones on this network. All are working fine. Due to my business travels, having access to my home network and my network drive is very useful. Now I don't have to carry my drive with me. I am not sharing this on the network though (not sure about the security yet). You can only access it remotely if you have admin log-in/pw. Great router for the price!

This router is phenominal. The setup took less than 5 minutes and its got range extending far beyond the house. I purchased a linksys ac router and its speeds were below what i'm now getting with this. Great choice for most.

You get what you pay for! Finally a good quality router that has a good solid steady signal. This router has full strength signal throughout my home and even out to the lower garage which is more than 100' away. And the signal strenght is adjustable... 80mw default, but adjustable up to 500mw. I set mine at 100mw and it was plenty. It was easy to set up too#follow the directions# I had other cheaper router #Belkin N450# that had unsteady signal strength and kept disconnecting for a few seconds every few minutes.. made me crazy

Best wireless router I've ever owned

After wasting way too much money on linksys, netgear, and belkin routers that all had various problems and poor support, I bought one of these based on the reviews on BB and other web sites. Wow, I am impressed. I've had the router in service for over a month without a reboot. I'm not using any of the advanced features, so I can't speak for those, but all the basic functions all work without problems.

    Best Bang For The Buck

I have been doing networking for years now, set up a high school back when real Cat 5 cables were used. I have dealt with many brands, Linksys, Netgear, Belkin..... this is by far the best router that I have used! Very simple to set up, just plug in, and the router greets you with your initial setup screen. Comes with a stand, makes it easier on me to see my status lights. Dual Band, the 5GHz band is by far the best reception I have ever seen! I have dealt with their customer support before with other products, best in tech! Nicest people, and are very willing to help!

Why didn't I buy this sooner

Struggled with ISP-provided modem+router for years. Verizon. Got this in anticipation of switch to cable, which after researching uses the same type of combo with weak wireless. I had this up and running with my old modem in 30 minutes. Setup wizard was awesome, even noticed duplicate IP addresses so assigned itself a new one. I now have signal out to the end of my 150 foot driveway. Not that I need that! Wish I had done this sooner.

Replaced three access points with this

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I run a rather complex home network with 33 connected clients as I write this. In my home I had three wireless access points in order to cover the home well. The routers I used were very old and my kids were complaining that 4G was faster than wireless, so it was time to upgrade. I wanted 5GHz because I assumed that the bad connections were due to interference, but this router proved me wrong. Sure, it has 5GHz, but no one cares because the 2.4GHz band performs so well, covering the house nicely. The "bad" spots in the home now even see a respectable 37 Mbps of speed. The included firmware did a lot of things well, but lacked two major abilities I needed: * Name static address hosts * Have multiple names for static hosts The included firmware will allow for static hosts but you can only assign IP addresses to them and cannot associate DNS names. Since you can do nothing with the internal DNS, you also cannot assign multiple names to hosts. I found the Merlin firmware which also appears to be from Asus and allows through the GUI to assign host names to the static entries. It also allows for SSH connections in addition to Telnet. Using the command line, Merlin allows for additional configuration information to be supplied to most of the Linux services that the device runs, letting me assign multiple names to a host, something I needed to do. In addition to expected features like port forwarding and a DMZ host, The router includes other advanced features such as QoS and traffic monitoring, which I may use at a later time. The operating system appears to be a variant of the Linux WRT builds and the Merlin fork is incredibly configurable. I had read that setup was easy, but I really didn't expect it to be for me. I was surprised. Once on the network, it was a matter of minutes before I had changed the subnet range to the one we use, assigned all of the static addresses and configured the two wireless networks. Soon I had discovered all of the port forwarding that I had missed and had those configured in no time. This router is now a two-year-old design and is still touted as the best available. I can see why. If you need a fast, stable, configurable and long-range wireless router that "just works," this is the one you want.

Great Wireless router with great range

I was torn between this and an Apple Airport Extreme and finally decided on this one. My house is three levels with a mix of Apple and pc products as well as a lot of other devices such as a Direct TV wireless connection and lots of portable devices too. Setup was very easy and it even allowed me to enter my own password which I used from my old router in hopes of not having to set them all up again. Ultimately I did have to re-enter the password in all devices but the process to set up the router was very simple. Everything can be operated on the router via the software setup on the PC so if you position your router in a remote area you are not forced to find the router to push the WPS button or even reboot it. You can do it all from the webpage on a wired device. Also it has a 2 year warranty which is double that of most devices. I even easily updated the firmware before use and that too was an easy process. I give it a solid A.

Above average user in regards to home networking and have used several products for both DSL and Cable networking. Just back to cable from DSL and bought the Motorola SB6121 modem and Asus RT-N66R router based on performance reviews at Best Buy and CNET. The router is performing great and has extended my range and stability, so I have no performance complaints. However the setup was difficult and the instructions completely worthless. I had to reset the router a few times and use the provided CD to step towards getting access to the device webpage. Once at webpage, not issues, but took about 45 minutest to finally get there. Still a good product.
