    So far so Good!

I bought this product in order to improve my online gaming experience and so far it is much improved. I believe the dual-band transceiver has a lot to do with this, plus the quality of the Asus brand.

    Overheats

I bought this device from BestBuy in November of 2013. After a few weeks I threw away the box and receipt not realizing that there were problems ahead. After a few month of use the router would shut down and restart at increasing frequency. The top of the device felt hot so perhaps that's the reason. After checking out the internet I found complaints with ASUS routers overheating. I'm not sure what these other people are using their router for, but at most I'm looking at static pages and a few YouTube videos. I'm not streaming movies from NetFlix, Amazon or HuLu. Because I no longer had my receipt I contacted Asus. They suggested that I submit an RMA. After figuring out that this means Return of Merchandise Authorization, I submitted my complaint and received the instructions to send my device to the Support center in Freemont, CA. It cost me $12 to ship it. After a week ASUS sent back the router, and it functioned as it should. However this nice behavior lasted for about 2.5 months, but then slowly the router started developing the same shutting down and restarting problem. At one point the whole router lost all information including it's name and login information. The frequency of shutting down and restarting became so frequent that it makes the router completely worthless. Frankly I would rather get my money back and get a new router than to pay another $12 for two and a half months of functionality.

Although my house is not real big, it is pretty spread-out (rancher). This router has very good connectivity.

    Was expecting more, very disappointed

I bought this router after I read all the fantastic reviews on here and on CNET, PCMag & Engadget. Let me tell you, I was disappointed and am taking the router back. First after I did a setup it said it had a FW update. I did the update and this caused the router (even after a hard reset after update), all of my network drives, items to not see each other. I spent almost 10 hours researching the problem and finally had to do several resets and update the FW again by doing it manually. Finally my LAN was reachable. Once I did that my 5Ghz rate standing right next to the router was 300Mbps. That's it. Upload and download speeds were half my Netgear R6300. My Netgear covered my entire house, this covered about half. I would not buy this router again and in further research doubt I would ever buy another ASUS router

Fails after 6 months. ASUS refuses to fix.

The WAN port died on this unit 6 months after purchase. I sent it in for RMA, and they shipped the product back without fixing it. Attempting to contact ASUS about the issue is impossible. Zero customer service.

First one lasted for 2 days. No luck on 2nd one

Bought one, lasted two days. Called ASUS, they tried everything they could, they then said "Take it back to Best Buy". Could not get the 2nd one to work good. We replaced a D-Link DIR-655 because we had to start rebooting it weekly, it would stream Netflix HD via kids XBOX in next room. ASUS could not. Bought a Netgear R6300. Our kid set it up while I slept. He usually cant do anything without help.

    Great start, but quick end

Based on initial impression, this should be a 5-star review. After 15 days, however, my wife reported she could not connect to our wireless Internet network. I hadn't noticed this on my business computer because I was hard-wired to the router. After rebooting the router, we found that wireless function was going in an out with never more than a few minutes connected. I've now replaced that unit with one more of the same and will give it another try. Fortunately, I got the extended warranty coverage on this when I purchased it. After a very bad experience with an ASUS computer, if I want an ASUS product, I won't buy it without the added insurance.

Several Features do NOT Work as Advertised

I am quite disappointed by this router. Parental controls don't work at all! And they're not designed well either - they're extremely basic. You can't set a device's wifi to be disabled at certain times because doing so just turns off wifi to that device. And URL blocking doesn't work at all - no effect whatsoever. And you can't block URLs for just one network or one device - it's all or nothing for the all devices - IF it worked! It's difficult to see which network a device is connected to. And it's difficult to coordinate IP, MAC and device names with each other. Unfortunately, some screens use MAC and other IP so you have to flip between screens to try to figure out which to choose. There's no way to restrict specific devices to designated networks. You can only restrict them by wifi frequency. Every time you make a change, even a simple one, the software cycles for a loooong time. There is no way to set wireless to turn off for periods. (Such as turning off the kids' wifi network at night.) The software looks impressive at first, but then you find out that it's really not well thought out. I am very disappointed. I expected better from Asus! The hardware is solid, though. It's really a shame that they messed up on the software so badly.

    DO NOT BUY

I bought one of these being a big fan of Asus, bad mistake. The top gets extremely hot, your internet will be on for 5 minutes and then down for 7 - 10 minutes. The Transistors are the wrong size and/or it is not heatsinked properly, as a result it over heats shutting down until it cools off and then comes back on.

just bought this router tonight. 8:10 to be exact. was recommended this brand by the Geek Squad. i was replacing a very old and excellent Lynksys wireless G router. brought it home. followed the instructions. but no power right out the gate. i noticed a small LED light on the supply plug. everything is plugged into a strip. everything else is working flawless. plugged it into another outlet, and got a light. returned to the power strip and plugged it in. i now have a light. continued my setup. was excited. finally got into the setup screen online. it timed out. looked down at the router; no lights on the router and a blinking blue light on the power plug. after multiple attempts at unplugging and re powering the router, same outcome every time. no power, and blinking LED on power plug. there was a firmware update, but its a little hard to update firmware when you cant keep internet from a constant power failure. after some digging online, i found that power supply failure with this product is nothing new. i will be returning to BestBuy at 10am sharp in the morning. i am torn whether to try an exchange, or just go back to the tried and true Lynksys.

Spent 5X more to get less

I've had the same cheap Linksys router for about 5 years now and with the addition of a smart tv and smart blu ray player, I felt it was time to upgrade. As I would try to watch Netflix on the tv it would freeze up constantly. I read multiple reviews on different sites to determine which router would be best and I settled on this one. I had no desire to spend $130, but when I heard it was one of the highest rated I did so. Any nagging fears I had were settled when the cashier told me I bought the best of the best. I get home, hook everything up and I was ecstatic. I get on my laptop which is a few feet away from the router and the signal is excellent. I go a few doors down to my bedroom and jump on my tablet, 2 bars. I was disappointed but figured I'd try anyway.I was able to surf the web, but every 2 min or so I would drop the signal. I am so disappointed!!!! Now I am trying to determine if maybe I got a lemon and should try to exchange it for a different one, or should I just go with another brand. This is highly disappointing. I hesitatingly spent 5X as much expecting superior service, but I got much better service from my $25 Linksys.

Power supply died after a year and one month, it's cheap and light to begin with, no surprise. I had the service plan luckily, but if you don't you're out of internet for days and paying 50 for a new power supply

This router is awful, it's only good for web browsing. Don't expect to watch any movies or shows. The coverage is terrible and if you plan on gaming with it put it down and get a name brand. Going back to my $20 linksys.
