Great laptop, but has a few flaws

Overall this laptop is a great choice for students, or anybody for that matter. Windows 10 is buggy. My unit makes a bit of a rattle noise while in use, and the fan is a bit on the loud side. I love the backlit keyboard, and the metal design, but I do wish the bottom was metal. The hinges are quite solid and are easy enough to open and close. The USB c port is a nice addition, although I haven't used it yet. I am giving it 4 stars just because of windows 10, but if it shipped with windows 7, it would be 5. Overall, I like the way windows looks, but there are many unpolished areas i.e. Control panel, when there is regular settings, and the contact option when in the "new" selection panel, when there is the people app.

Only flaw with this model - it needed more memory

This is an incredible computer. Well built all around, excellent screen, pretty good touchpad.
The specs speak for themselves. This is a good value computer for the money. 1TB hard drive, nice build, powerful processor.
But as shipped it lacks RAM. It doesn't multitask as well as it should. 6GB is good for a single demanding task, but once you start ACTUALLY working, it starts to drag a bit.
Plug an 8GB chip of memory in this to bring it to its max of 12 GB, and WOW. You will see this thing fly. It will run practically anything, and even most games. I was running Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and still working on several browser windows with ease after maxing the RAM in this thing.
So, I don't know why they kept the RAM low. But bring it up to spec in that area, and you will see this thing become the computer of your dreams.

Great Laptop For The Price!

I recently purchased this laptop and I'm impressed by the features and functionality. It's fast and makes multitasking a breeze! The touch screen and 2-1 feature are a plus! The only con I noticed is the power button is oddly placed close to where your hand will be when holding it which caused me to accidentally turn it off but besides that its definitely a great buy!

I like the computer when it works. At first the computer was fine. Started transferring my files from my old computer over to it. After updating windows the computer began slowing down horribly. I could not open the windows file explorer and when it did open it was about 2 minutes after I clocked it. So I did a windows 10 refresh erasing all files and starting from scratch. With this the computer had no change still slow and now the mouse has stopped working. I decided to reinstall windows 10 with a copy I have on usb. After this everything was fine... until today. Only 3 days of having the computer and the right side of the trackpad is no longer functioning. I will be returning this computer today for another one. Maybe I just got a lemon. Fingers crossed

I forgot mention in top of the issues i mentioned in my first review, the mouse also did do the jumping thing a lot and right away.
A list of issues for a quick rundown:
1. Mouse pad does not scroll with two finger scroll about 65% to 70% of the time.
2. Mouse does jump as if there is some porthole it went through then reappears elsewhere.
3. Lagging mouse pad can be noticed that when you use the mouse pad, it has a delay very obvious to anyone.
4. Does seem slow at times as if programs are running all the time in the background and may be the cause of the computer acting slow and slow response to mouse pad.
5. Tent mode would not rotate screen. Went to settings and the setting is grayed out which means its disabled or locks the user out. I tried setting it to portrait, would not switch, tried the other two settings of landscape flipped and portrait flipped and went back n forth but it wouldn't flip on its own for screen orientation. Then i went back to flip it in tent mode then the screen finally switched. I go back to try it again and again and it flips then all of a sudden landscape flipped orientation after going to settings to select it. Then still it kept me locked out on allowing me set it to "on" for rotating screen automatically. It still has stayed locked but somehow when switching all the different screen orientation settings somehow let it work finally but i cannot trust it to stay working while the setting is locked and to let me set it "on".
Remember, these are not because its an Asus. I stand behind Asus as my 10 year old Gamers Republic G51 Asus with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz and 4 gb RAM with Ubuntu virtual machine partitioned on it and still is alive and working well with original parts. Has tons of software programs that run heavy but not as heavy as photo editor stuff.
This is Microsoft type stuff and or bloatware issues is what it looks like.
All issues were found within 24 hours, not 24 hours of usage but literally 24 hours so i probably ran into all these issues within a usage time of 5 to 7 hours.
Side note: for any other developers out there, its super easy to run Perl without any long headache setup.
I will post a video on YouTube soon with a title similar to something like, Install Perl and run programs in Windows.
Downside of Macs: even though they already come with Perl packaged on the computer, its not as good as Notepad++ for what they have for it but they do mention out there in GoogleLand that TextMate is next best thing for text editor if Vim is too hard for you. But its easy to learn. Take it slow.

I was trying to decide between the HP Pavillion x360 and the Asus Q304UA. The customer rep assisting was very helpful, she did suggest the Asus over the HP because it would be the same thing but I would save some money. Well sometimes saving money isn't the most important thing. It was beautiful laptop, sleek, the fingerprint feature was awesome. But for the life of me I couldn't get over the touchpad right off the bat. First of all, the mouse had slow tracking, then suddenly it would all the over across the screen. I restarted it 3 times, but the same thing would happen. It became unbearable when it wouldn't allow me drag anything over the screen or just wouldn't move at all. Then I went back and read the reviews and saw the comments on the touchpad and realized that other people were having the same issues so I decided to return it and just spend a little more money for the hp which I love! However, if you are interested in purchasing this, be mindful of the touchpad, if you would use it more as a laptop instead of tablet it might be something to think about.

Bought this for my daughter who really wanted a Macbook but didn't want to spend so much. At first, we thought it was a great deal - this little laptop was really great, the screen quality was far beyond expectations.
On day 29, the hard drive died, and the laptop would not proceed past the BIOS (no boot drive found). So, I have to ship it to ASUS at my own expense ($40) and hope I have better luck after it's repaired. My daughter is now without her laptop for 2 weeks or more, impacting her schoolwork. Very frustrated. Very disappointed.
I will update the review after receiving the repaired laptop back from ASUS.

I bought this PC 3 months ago, everything is perfectly, but the mouse / touchpad is exasperating. If you can tolerate the breaks, stop working, zoom in unwanted; You could buy this, because everything else is very good.
In conclusion, if you can buy another pc, buy it. This version (Q304UA) its not good.

I know that there are always negative reviews, but hear me out. I purchased this and after running through a few hours of updates the computer was extremely slow. It would crash when trying to open up websites, freeze when trying to open word or excel-actually just about anything would freeze it up. I waited it out, eventually it go better. I reasoned that it needed a breaking in period.About 10 days into using it, though, I notice the N key is sticking. This is the last straw for me so I take it to best buy to look at it. They find multiple keys that are sticking. In the end, I dumped this and got an HP. If you buy this, hold on to the receipt. You'll probably end up returning it.

On initial startup, a box popped saying there is a windows update. Do I want to install update? I said yes. Big mistake. 4 hours later it finally finished. Upon reboot it stuck on Asus splash screen and that was that. Took it back for another and bypassed update. Win 10 version 1511 was installed .The last 1511 was 5-10-2016 The date of manufacture was Jan 2017, very strange. Allowed to update to Ver 1607 and seems to work well after the same 4 hour update.

The ASUS name used to mean something when it came to quality and customer service Now their word means nothing. I bought my laptop 2 weeks later the hard drive is shot. The laptop will only boot to the BIOS. I'm told I need to send it back for a warranty repair. I'm told that they are going to email me an express shipping label and there will be a 3 day turn around. So Im thinking 2 days there 3 day turn around 2 days back for a total of 7 days. What i got is a ground shipping label that takes 8 day from pickup to delivery 3 day turn around and if shipping back to me takes the same amount of time i'm looking at 19 days for turnaround and when i call to speak to a supervisor i either get hung up or put on forever hold.

Horrible Laptop!! NOT designed for Win 10!

It's been almost 2 months and this laptop is STILL no usable.
I'm an IT, I set up, maintain and update computers every day all day and this laptop has been nothing but a nightmare. I have spent maybe 20 hours over the last 2 months with Asus Tech Support as well as Best Buy and even after sending it to the Best Buy service center for a 2 week round trip the returned device still does not function properly.
If you buy this laptop be prepared to be extremely patient. It can take 30 minutes to fully boot. A few times an hour the mouse will turn into an unusable spinning circle as the computer tries to process a simple command (and often the task manager shows only 5% CPU and maybe 2% hard drive access during these times). Go figure right? But a majority of the time the CPU and Disk Access levels will be extremely high.
Even an Asus Tech admitted that this laptop does NOT play well with Windows 10.
Of note: Since the deployment of Windows 10 our tech support issues have risen by almost 200%. We have had to almost double our support services just to handle all the issues Windows 10 brings to the table. Windows 10 is so busy analysing your actions and sending your private information to Microsoft the computer is constantly laboring to support the invasion of your privacy to inform Microsoft about what you are doing.
My poor client is absolutely fit to be tied. They now despise Best Buy, Asus and Microsoft. They have been on a 2 month digital nightmare. Best Buy's/Geek Squad's $200 warranty is a joke and useless. (The staff are GREAT! The company/warranty policies, red tape and support bureaucracy is a walk into oblivion)
Be aware, when you purchase the Geek Squad warranty, by doing so, you give up many rights to return or refund. You are paying for LESS options NOT more. Your best interest are NOT looked out for with the Best Buy warranty! It's the opposite in reality.
My advice: Do not purchase this laptop and NEVER purchase Best Buy warranties and even though I have been a loyal supporter of Microsoft products for 25 years we are now inviting clients to explore the option of migrating to Apple.
Also, shame on Asus for dropping this poor excuse for a Win 10 laptop on the market. They knew it had issues with Win 10 before they offered it to the public. (In all fairness however, most computers labor under the Windows 10 environment. Microsoft, via Windows 10 is so busy invading your privacy there are little resources left to process your operational needs).
Just so you know, this is my FIRST negative review I have ever written online. I have been a computer tech for over 25 years and I feel a responsibility to help protect the integrity of my industry and to bring attention to these crimes against consumers.

I purchased this laptop at a great price $499. I spent hours researching which laptop I should get and for the price this was the one. If you are going to buy it I highly suggest buying a SSD. The boot times are amazing, everything runs smoothly. My only con is the trackpad its not as sensitive as I would like.

NEVER BUY ANY ASUS PRODUCT EVER!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Warning: If you buy any ASUS product, in my case a higher end laptop, and it breaks (manufactures warranty or not) THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS COMPLETELY USELESS. Had repeated and various problems and sent back laptop (4) times, all refurbished and non-functional. After the fourth time, I was promised a new model, still in the litigation process, been a month now and they are trying to send me another refurbished same model. I work as a supervisor in State Government and will do everything in my limited power to use a different company for Government business. Best Buy was excellent, and fully understand that models break down, but was severely disappointed in the customer service from ASUS. Buyer be extremely cautious. I just lost 1200$ to ASUS and have nothing to show for it. I was always told how great of a company ASUS was and how great their components are but that is NO LONGER TRUE! They have not won any significant awards since 2013 (you can look that up) and are no longer this great company. I bought the computer 11 months ago and have not had the computer in my possession for 4 of those 11 months.
Here is my story, if you want the details of what I went through:
I bought an ASUS notebook (Republic of Gamers) in 12/2015.....it failed in April 2015 for a failed component in my charger, it fried my daughter board, sent into their repair center....3 weeks later got the same model back and fixed...it failed AGAIN in July 2015 with a failed Intel Graphics card.... sent back to repair center....ANOTHER 3 weeks later got the same computer back fixed......failed AGAIN in Aug. 2015, failed NVIDA graphics card....sent in to repair...3 weeks later got a refurbished same model replacement.....had that for 3 weeks then failed AGAIN when a component failed in my screen....sent back in to repair center...3 weeks later got MY 2ND REFURBISHED same model and it came BROKEN!! It didn’t even work when I got it. I sent that model in the repair center, got there 11/4, they mixed up my RMA number so I did not match my serial number, took a week to figure that you, I was promised by their top supervisors that with this many failed model I would be eligible for a new, upgraded different model replacement. Couldn’t get ahold of the supervisor I have been talking to, she was avoiding my phone calls. I got an email from the support center that they are offering me AGAIN, THE SAME MODEL REFURBISHED replacement for the 3rd time. If I was to reject this offer, and they choose not to offer me anything else, they said they are going to SEND BACK MY BROKEN COMPUTER and that would be it! The customer support said they actually have nothing to do with what replacement you would get. It’s all up to the repair center, and you cannot speak to the repair center, because, “it is not in their job description to talk to the public.” All this has happened while in the manufactures warranty. I bought the computer 11 months ago and have not had the computer in my possession for 4 of those 11 months. Once again, beware, if you decide to go with ASUS because you are risking hundreds or thousands of dollars (in my case).

Well I can't say a whole lot about it. Took brand new laptop out of the box. Took about 3 hours to do initial setup. Gave me ten minutes to play around Windows and froze up. Restart, freeze, restart , freeze, etc. Would love to say it's a lemon but from the reviews, sounds like it happens alot.

Purchased the Asus Q304 and loved it. Fast and easy to use. 10 days after purchase, it started freezing and then the hard drive crashed. Returned it for an exchange for a new Q304. (Best Buy has been great). The second hard drive failed after 7 days. I'm thinking there's a quality control problem.
