Needed a home computer as we were still using our old desktop (about 10 years old), decided to get laptop and sales associate recommended the ASUS. After reviewing some of the reviews and looking at specs we purchased it. Have been very happy with the speed of computer also like the number pad not to mention it looks nice. The battery lasts a fair amount of time as well. So far haven't had any problems and we have had it for 2 months now.

I'm a big fan of ASUS in general, so you can't go wrong there. I liked that it was an i7 for a relatively low price. My only real complaint is that I couldn't get the equivalent thing without it being a 2-in-1 or a touchscreen. I don't know anybody who really needs it to do that, and it seems that it's getting harder and harder to find a laptop that will just fold up normally. Aside from that, it's a nice machine for the price.

Bought this computer to replace an old HP laptop that had become too slow and outdated but which I really liked. Although I'm still adjusting to the layout and general operation of this one, some of the good features include the backlit keyboard, the light weight, and the quickness of operation, especially at startup. Really wish it included a DVD drive, though, and the battery never seems to want to charge all the way up to 100%.

Great Laptop, BUT the Hard Drive is the Bottleneck

    Posted .

I just bought this laptop, which is my first Windows computer since 2006. I left Windows in favor of Mac in 2006 while dealing with the biggest fail called Vista. Windows 10 looks very promising so I gave Windows another shot. This computer has remarkable specs for the price. I found it odd to see 12 GB ram, instead of 16GB or 8GB. This unit has a 8GB and a 4GB stick, which is uncommon. Usually you pair same size sticks. The max memory is 16GB. I figured the hard drive will be the bottle neck, but I had no idea how much of a bottleneck it actually is. The hard drive has a capacity of 2TB which is impressive. I would have rather liked to see a 256GB or 512GB SSD instead. At least then I would have had a snappy and responsive experience, which would complement the nice I7 processor. Instead I am sitting here for a while just for the computer to boot up, then another while after logging in. This just takes away from all the other power parts in this computer. Bottlenecks like this make people say, but I thought this is a 6th Generation Intel I7 with dedicated graphics card, it should be flying. Well it would with an SSD harddrive! To add to the bottle neck a 5400 rpm (the higher the number this faster the harddrive) drive has been used instead of the 7200 rpm. Really? ASUS delivered an exceptional value and completely dropped the ball by putting in a slow mechanical hard drive. In this case it shows, size DOES NOT MATTER! After the hard drive rant follows the rest without the rant. This laptop has only one slot for a hard drive. If you want to use an SSD you will have to replace the 2TB hard drive. This laptop has two graphic cards, one on board graphic card (sharing memory from the 12 GB ram) and a dedicated 2GB nVidea card, which is great! The battery lasts pretty long (5+ hours for light activities), which is a plus. I like the screen, it is sharp and the colors are awesome. Personally I don't care too much for glossy screens because of the strain on the eyes with everything that is reflected in it. Matte is my personal preference, maybe next time. The sound quality is great! I like the amount and variety of plugs this laptop has to offer! One Thunderbolt 3/USB-C, 3 USB 3, HDMI an SD-Card slot, a headset/microphone combo jack, just wonderful! I also like the backlit keyboard, even in the dark you can get your stuff done. You can flip the screen around to make it a tablet. That said the screen is a touchscreen as well. I am not a fan of the power button being on the side and being as narrow as it is. It feels uncomfortable. I wished for the laptop to have an indent to make the process of opening it easier, oh well. Something I am definitely going to do in the near future is beefing up the memory to 16GB of ram and replacing that utterly slow hard drive with a snappy SSD. Would I still recommend it, yes, because all you have to do is replace the hard drive to have an excellent computer that even handles games pretty well. Even with the additional investment of the SSD it is a great value for this machine. Something to be aware of, the screws in this laptop (in case you want to upgrade the hard drive yourself) are not philips screws!!! They look like torx screws? Why only 3 stars? The poor performance of this hard drive is crippling the real performance of this machine and with that negatively impacting the overall experience working with this laptop. In my opinion this is huge and worth 2 stars.

    Very Sharp, College Student Computer

I needed a computer for design software. This one had all the specs and then some. I really like the display, keyboard and functionality. I still have a lot to learn about it, but I only gave it 4 stars because I feel uneasy flipping the screen around and having to rest the tablet on the un-protected keyboard. Also, computer gets confused sometimes when switching to/from tablet mode. Very sharp. I love it.

Has worked great straight out of the box. Comes with a mini Asus subwoofer (unexpected) that has been quite rad as well. Physical build quality is excellent. Boots up quick and the only software issue I have had was doing a reinstall of the Nvidia (graphics) interface. The only con I can think of is that the screen and laptop itself are total fingerprint magnets. Asus includes a small microfiber cloth to help mitigate this but frequent cleanings are definitely needed.

I purchased this for my son. He had a bad experience with the fragility of a Surface unit and his first reaction was "wow, that is big". He soon found how more efficient he was with the full size keyboard and said the size is no longer an issue. Let's be real and say rarely on the machines on someone's lap. He loves the speed, power, screen quality and feels secure with the rugged aluminum body. His friends were impressed with the specs "under the hood".

The computer it self is very fast, however I had to return it within an hour of buying it due to the hard drive crashing when I was setting it up the first time. When I got the second new computer it was working correctly and I haven't had a problem since. I only rated it 3 stars due to the hassle I had to go through.
