Runs really hot, seems too powerful for its own go
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The price is right on this "gaming" laptop but it typically hovers around 80° C or higher during most gaming sessions.

Capable budget laptop let down by wifi and display
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Asus has been putting out “ROG” branded gaming laptops for quite some time now, and my gamer friends had usually good things to say about them. But they were costly, and clunky - one of the major reason I have been using my Xbox One console and my gaming desktop so far. The new ROG Zephyrus kind of alleviates that issue of mine, being quite thin compared to it’s spec, as well being a bit cheaper. The system is a bit unusual as it has AMD’s Ryzen 7 (3750H) which has a Picasso-based Vega 10 GPU, working with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q GPU. Both of them are kind of mid/upper-mid tier in their respective segments, so I wasn’t expecting dazzling performance from it. The AMD cpu is more geared towards power efficiency, and the Nvidia GTX 1660 does not have the ray tracing and tensor cores like its Turing-shader based big brothers. The laptop has Windows 10 Home edition installed, so the setup is nothing spectacular. However, after setup, I had two gripes: there’s a bunch of junk games/softwares that were preinstalled, filling up the Start menu. And second, the host of Asus softwares is too much - I had to figure out what each thing do, which kind of hampers the “1st impression”. I understand serious gamers want to tweak every little thing to their liking, but sometimes, for someone new like me, it’s quite overwhelming. I hope Asus had some kind of quick tour/tutorial so you can go through all these things. Commons non-gaming tasks performed really well. I didn’t benchmark the 512 GB Intel SSD, but again this is not the top of the line one. I gathered that this can be replaced easily, but again Asus gives no indication as such. 16 GB DDR4 RAM is quite good (2400 MHz), and one slot is accessible so it can be swapped out with a larger module down the line. The keyboard is very nice - it’s a bit different to the HP Spectre x360 keyboard I’m used to, so I had to spend some time before I could get comfy. The white backlight has multiple levels of brightness - but no RGB lighting. Another thing that impressed me is the built-in speakers. After bearing with the tinny sound from my Spectre x360, I was impressed with the bass and overall sound. I’m certain there are better alternatives, but I’m satisfied with what this one offers. The display is FHD, 15.6” with very slim bezel, and most importantly 120 Hz. This “does” make some difference if you’re playing fast-paced FPS games. However, I was underwhelmed by the brightness - it was too weak when outdoors. The matte screen is not bad, but I wish the panel was a bit more brighter. From aesthetics purposes, the Zephyrus looks cool. The ROG logo on the top shell glows red when the laptop turned on - however, I wish I could change the color or intensity to my liking. Maybe it’s possible by some Asus software, but again I couldn’t find any. Under the display panel you have ROG Zephyrus written - which is almost invisible to make out. The touch-pad is nice and responsive, and the numerous fans on all the sides give you the impression that Asus engineers had designed it to avoid overheating. Fan speed and other things can be set up through the Asus Armory Crate software (which has it’s dedicated launch key on the top left). For now, I only have played Assassin's Creed Odyssey in this laptop. I relied on the GeForce Experience software for the game settings and didn’t spend much fiddling with it. Overall, graphics was quite good. With the AC power cord attached, I used the max setting in Armory crate to boost performance a bit (which kept the fans spinning and whining all the time), and found that it was able to keep 50-60 fps most of the time. From battery life perspective, I averaged 5-6 hours with non-gaming activities - I avoided playing a lot in battery mode as it reduced the performance quite a bit - this maybe due to my improper set up of the power/performance plan (which again got be confused). All in all, I found the laptop to be capable gaming platform. I like the “not-so-aggressive” look and the acceptable performance. But the dim display, whiny fans when in full load, and most of all the ridiculously incapable wifi card may keep a lot of people away from this. In this budget, it’s worth considering, but I’d advise to try before you buy.
