Absolutely perfect for a Casual Gamer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received the ASUS - 15.6" Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q - 512GB Solid State Drive - Metallic Hairline Black as part of the Best Buy Tech Insider Network program. My first foray into PC gaming in and am in love with thing. It's completely Perfect for what I need. Handles SIMS 4, GTA V, and Fallout 4 pretty well. Even can handle the mods for the games too. I'll break down sections of the unit I found stood out to me below: Design - Pretty nice overall. The top shell is cool with it's 3D design and ROG emblem which lights.Unfortunately it's only one color (red). The Keyboard has nice big, tactile backlit keys and a decently sized trackpad. The bottom shell is plastic and can be removed to get to some of the components. Display - Is very nice and smooth with 120Hz refresh rate, gaming just looks great. Gets pretty bright, but color accuracy and depth is lacking. Doesn't seem to be any settings to tune to liking. Performance - Performs pretty admirably. Has the ASUS Armory Crate system which allows you to adjust various settings like CPU and GPU speeds, fan cooling intensity. Customization to any preference. Handled SIMS 4 with a generous number of Mods without qualms on it Balanced setting. GTA V and Fallout 4 with mods I placed it in the Turbo setting to be safe and had no issues as well. Final Impressions - Overall I love this thing! It's my first gaming laptop and will push me into building my own desktop rig at some point. The price point of $1100 seems like a good deal, the only one I’d consider over this would the Lenovo Legion Y540 or the new Razer Blade Stealths for a couple $100 more, but if $1100 is all your budget allows, you won’t be disappointed. Or you’ll just build a less portable desktop setup for that kind of money.

Way better than my previous gaming laptop

I'm usually an Intel/nVidia combo person, but the CPU in this has proven to be an extensive upgrade from my previous laptop, GL502VT. The 1660 Ti is a massive upgrade from the 970m. Any game I throw at it, it plays with ease. Tomb Raider, Apex Legends, League of Legends, it has no issues playing these titles and even newer ones. The display is great with 120Hz refresh rate, but the colors are not as great as you'd expect for photo/video work without changing it up a bit. The design is sleek and not particularly embarrassing when you are out and about in public.The speakers are okay and to be honest, who gets a laptop to play through its speakers? Oh and this has no webcam, which is not an issue for me, but if you need a webcam, you need to purchase an external one.

Do not buy

Processor Throttling BIOS Flaw

Died after 3 days

Great Value for the Price

I’ve had it for four years almost now and I still love it, also very sleek design! Only issue I have is overheating and even then, it’s not a problem with the laptop but with my cooling pad.

We are sorry to hear that the FPS is dropping below 10. It can normal as video fps drops because the scene has changed and it takes CPU/GPU processor to calculate the distant landscape, but in a few seconds, the fps return to normal. Are you currently running the games on the dedicated GPU? If not, please follow these steps:
First, open the Nvidia Control Panel. One way to do that is right-clicking on an empty space on the desktop and choosing Nvidia Control Panel from the menu.
Navigate to 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings.
Open the tab Program Settings and choose the game from the dropdown menu.
Next, select the preferred graphics processor for this program from the second dropdown. Your Nvidia GPU should show as High-performance Nvidia processor.
Finally, save your changes. Your game should now run with the dedicated Nvidia GPU.
