The best laptop i've ever owned.

I'll preface this review by saying it's closer to a 4.5/5 stars, but it is only for what might be software issues. The build of this laptop is incredible, solid and sleek and feels amazing to the touch. The screen is bright and vivid, with very minimal backlight bleed. Rarely do I feel products this expensive were completely worth it but this is one of them. It runs games exceptionally well, even decent enough with ray tracing, and i've never had slowdown doing tasks on it. Even the built-in speakers are incredible sounding, I dont even feel the need to grab my headphones sometimes because they're so darn good. The only downside people seem to have is that this is a laptop without a webcam, and I personally have no issue with that at all, if that's how they made this thing so thin then the crappy webcam they probably would have included wouldnt be worth it. My last warning would be if you need a laptop that doesn't get hot and loud this might not be the best bet, as it does get hot enough to fry an egg (at the max speeds, mind you) but I personally think it's reasonable with how much power was crammed into this beautiful little machine. The battery life is also, compared to other laptops, really great. However, I can't really seem to hit the 10 hours others talk up, it's always closer to 4-5 which is still pretty cool considering.

Really happy with this laptop. Its compact unlike most gaming laptops yet has enough power to play modern games at good quality and framerate. Battery life is good, screen is vibrant. It does get hot when under loads but I havent had any problems with overheating. There is a lot of pre-installed software to monitor various systems and I am not sure what is actually needed and what is bloatware. I updated the drivers and software before I did much testing of the laptop and I havent hard any problems with screen turning black or crashes.

Switched from my Macbook to this computer. The keyboard is a million times better than butterfly switches, although the backlight is awful. Not having a webcam kinda sucks but it also makes me feel more safe considering all the security concerns today. The SSD, Graphics, and CPU are insanely fast. Everything boots within seconds and gaming performance is on point.

This is my first gaming rig but by far one of the best on the market for the price and the size with a monster GPU! It looks nice slim and sleek with two colors (I have the white one) runs demanding games on ultra settings while always hitting over 60fps. The build is super solid and smart in when you open it up the bottom of the screen prop the fans up off the table so more ventilation! only con is that it can get loud with the fans but if you have a headset you wont really hear it and its not loud enough to disturb anyone around you. The screen is very vibrant and gets pretty bright. RGB on the keyboard is crap but who really cares when you read the specs on this monster. deserves 5 stars even for the cons!! get you one!

Insane performance in a tiny laptop

This laptop CPU trades blows with most desktops - it's that good. The GPU is no slouch either, but it's limited to 65W so it performs a little worse than other mobile 2060's out there. And all that power in a 3.5 lb laptop is just remarkable. Comes at a price though: heat and noise. This laptop gets hot and loud unless you limit the CPU wattage (I'm running comfortably at 25W, down from the default 35W). You can also switch from Performance mode to Silent in the included Armoury Crate app to bring fan noise under control at the expense of a small amount of performance. I run 24/7 in Silent and haven't really noticed a speed difference from Performance and the fans are much, much quieter. Memory and SSD are upgradeable - there is only one RAM slot, so out of the 16GB, 8GB is soldered and can't be replaced. I'm running fine with 40GB - 8GB soldered + a 32GB DDR4-3200 stick. Final verdict: Best laptop I've ever owned!

Unboxing and Setup I was excited to receive this brand-new ASUS ROG Zephyrus Gaming Laptop. Opening the sexy box and raising the lid caused the box to lift the laptop at an angle and present it to me - just like a Hallmark gift card.   The laptop is amazingly light at only 3.7 lbs. It has a beautiful white lid with an AniMe Matrix LED display that shines through 6,536 perforations. The magnesium-aluminum alloy is fingerprint-resistant. Upon opening the cover, the laptop automatically powers up and begins the Windows configuration process. Raising the lid also lifts the back of the laptop up off the desk to improve airflow and cooling. During setup, Windows asked for a fingerprint scan, and it took me a few minutes to figure out that the power switch is also a fingerprint scanner. It is amazingly quiet during setup, and there was no fan nose. Once Windows 10 was up and running, I was pleased to see it didn't have a bunch of add-on software installed.     After Windows was configured, the MyASUS program ran, and I registered for a MyASUS account. The app showed my system settings, and that an update was needed for the keyboard firmware. That took less than a minute and a reboot. The MyASUS program also provides many diagnostic steps for troubleshooting if there are issues. I appreciate that it allows me to set the battery charging mode to Maximum Lifespan mode for extending the life of the battery life, or to 100% full mode if I expect to be away from charging for a while.     The Armoury Crate application is the primary dashboard for the gaming and performance settings of the laptop. It displays the CPU and GPU Stats and the configuration of the hardware as:   • AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS with Radeon Graphics • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 with Max-Q Design @ 6GB (192bit) • 16 GB RAM • 1 TB Storage of SSD   With the Armoury Crate application, I can quickly change the performance mode of the laptop between Windows, Silent, Performance, Turbo, and Manual for custom performance settings. I can select which processes to stop when I'm gaming, create and select gaming profiles, and more features than I can describe here.   After all the updates were completed and several reboots, I noticed that the volume seemed to be very quiet even though it was turned up to 100%. A full shut down and restart fixed the problem.   Graphics and Gaming   I love the performance of the 1920 x 1080 14" display. The matt texture significantly reduces any reflection and makes the text easy to read. My first test was with a YouTube HD movie. It was crystal clear without any delay.   For gaming, I a big fan of Minecraft and No Mans Sky. With No Mans Sky, in Turbo mode, the graphics are smooth and beautiful. This is the best gaming experience I have seen yet with this game. The laptop's fans kicked into full while playing this graphically intense game. However, the laptop itself stayed cool enough to not cause any issues. I recommend headphones and keep the laptop plugged in for something this demanding.   On Minecraft, I decided to go to battery mode only. Again, the graphics and gameplay were ultra-smooth. I cranked up the rendering and distances for the game, and it still performed nicely. I went with Performance mode this time. The fans again kicked in, but not as loudly as with No Mans Sky. After an hour of playing Minecraft on battery only, the indicator for the battery was down to 50%. So, for intense gaming on batteries, you can expect around 2-3 hours.   Performance   To check the performance of the laptop, I ran the PassMark Performance Tester program. The overall performance score came out to 4706, which ran circles around my 1.5-year-old laptop at 2405. Battery life is advertised as up to 13 hours of regular use. I managed to get around eight with the regular use of web surfing, playing music from YouTube, and writing code. And I still had over 10% of battery life. This is way more than regular daily use, and I would think this would be a great laptop to take when traveling.       Pros • This laptop is crazy fast. This is the fastest Windows boot I have ever experienced. • The AMD Ryzen 9 chip is a quality performer for up to 13 hours of regular battery use. • Super light at only 3.7 lbs. • Beautiful 14" display with a non-reflective texture. • 2 USB A/C ports • 1 TB SSD drive • 1 HDMI port • 3.5mm phone/mic jack • Backlit keyboard. • Raising the lid will raise the back of the laptop off the surface slightly to improve cooling.  • Beautiful fingerprint-resistant white lid and silver aluminum base • Fingerprint scanner in the power button. • Selectable performance modes for the computer and Wi-fi networking.   Cons • The power connector is in a weird spot in the middle of the left side. • No camera. • No ethernet port. • No numeric keypad.   Overall   This is an amazingly powerful gaming laptop for the price. It's not top of the line, but for my needs, it is a perfect fit. I'm impressed with the feel of the keyboard for a laptop and that the overall design of the laptop does not scream "Gamer!" The long battery life during regular use combined with the lightweight and slim footprint makes this the ideal laptop for traveling, or for slinging into the backpack for a round of LAN party gaming.

Very good product. Gets hot when doing extensive gaming under highest settings, but stays well under maximum temperature requirements. Fans get loud, but performance is amazing. Keyboard is great, laptop has good battery and lightweight. Would buy even if a good gamer, capable of great framerates. Overall would defiantly recommend.

I've only had this laptop 2 days, so this is a very preliminary review. I'll potentially post an update later on if I discover anything particularly great (or terrible) later on. First impressions, however, are excellent. As the specs show, the laptop packs an incredible amount of power for such a small form factor. I'm impressed by the look and feel of the machine, it's very stylish while also practical for work, gaming, and general use. I haven't pushed the machine's performance yet with gaming or other processing intensive tasks yet but have used the machine casually to get a little work done. The battery life is great, and I'm impressed with how light the machine is. It boots quickly and the machine has been snappy with every task I've worked on so far. The screen and keyboard were a little smaller than I was thinking it would be (I'd not used a 14" screen before). However, I find that I actually don't mind that the machine is a little smaller and I think I even like the size. I bought the PC while on travel and so the size is actually going to be really convenient for getting around. Overall, great first impression!

This laptop is a beast. I've owned the new Alienware Area 51M, the Alienware M15 R2, M17 R2, and just about every Razer Blade made since 2017....this laptop is my favorite. For gaming, I easily run COD Warzone fully maxed out (incl ray tracing) at 100+ FPS and video editing and encoding speeds are about the best I've ever seen in a laptop. On top of that, I easily get 10 hours on the battery without jumping through hoops like I've had to on every Intel laptop for the past few years (no more throttlestop madness). Additional thoughts: ***Pros*** *Extremely powerful and efficient CPU *Solid GPU for the size *Small form factor and light weight *Very good battery life *Good screen and solid overall construction ***Cons*** *Keyboard backlight is poor. However the keyboard is EASY to see, event at night, with the backlight off, the screen illuminates it al with ease ***Other Comments*** *Some people have mentioned the slow refresh and possible ghosting issue. I have had no issue with that what so ever. *It would have been interesting to have a full RTX2060 in this, but I suspect it would run too hot *I can't wait to see Ryzen 9 in more laptops, it's a monster CPU, AMD has finally done it.

Great as a gaming desktop replacement

I bought this to replace a desktop gaming rig that I built in 2017 and was taking up too much desk space. The old computer was a Ryzen 5, GTX 1070, 16GB, and this laptop matches the performance of that one in terms of graphics and exceeds it with loading times by a good margin. With gaming this laptop does get warm, but as long as you realize that this is by design and that all gaming laptops get hot then it isn't an issue. Under non-gaming use the laptop turns off the discrete graphics and runs cool and quietly and the battery lasts a long time. The metal build is very premium feeling and the screen looks sharp. Keyboard is mechanical but much quieter than my external Razer. I generally play games on an external monitor using a USB-C to display port cable so that it still uses G-Sync, and it looks as good as it did with my desktop. As this is a direct replacement for my old desktop, and I was not in the market for a laptop with a touch screen or a webcam. If this were a "daily driver" only laptop, then I would have shopped around more - possibly for a Razer Stealth or XPS, and traded some gaming performance.

It over exceeded my expectations in a lot of aspects but as well as disappointed me, the 2060 max-q is somewhat powerful for a 1080p 120hz display but don’t expect to run any raytracing. The response rate of the display isn’t really the best and the Backlit keyboard isn’t very bright i preferred to have it off and have the display illuminate the keyboard. The laptop has a minimum amount of ports excluding a Ethernet port and no webcam but surprisingly a built in microphone. Overall for a college student that’s on the go and in need for a lightweight small but quick ( with the Ryzen 9 4900hs and 16gb ram) and a really good battery life vs the competition, the G14 is perfect for you.

I have owned and used many gaming laptops throughout my life..However I always had another laptop in conjunction for browsing or light office works. I was never able to use any gaming laptop as my one and only primary laptop. This changed that.. portability is excellent, Battery life is out of the world, can be charged with MacBook charger and quality feels reasonable for the price. coming to the gaming part the performance was great due to Ryzen and 2060. My previous Alienware had core i7 and gtx1060.. definitely a lot of improvement when compared my old one. Ghost recon and Assasin Creed odyssey were playable at ultra setting at 60fps with out any screen tearing issues. All in all an excellent laptop may be a bit over priced considering the 30 series cards in the line.. pick it up if you find it on any thanks giving deals...

The battery life is great, it's light weight, powerful enough to play most games I own at decent settings. The fan can get a little loud under high load on the turbo profile and it runs fairly hot when you stress it but since this thing is so small and light I am not surprised. Overall I am pleased with it.

(Jan 2021). I have a model manufactured July 2020. This thing is pretty much silent when doing day to day stuff like word processing, email, surfing. I use it for playing older games (5+ years) mostly, and it does very well with those. The newest games I play on it are Civ 6 and Cities Skylines. It runs those very well. I have tried Death Stranding on this and was able to run / output 120 fps to my TV via displayport. Minecraft runs amazing. It can do Minecraft's raytracing, but it gets very loud and hot. So I recommend it for older games maxed out, or newer games, at mid to low settings. One of the main reasons I got this laptop was to use ESRI's ArcGIS Pro. It runs this program VERY WELL. Fast processor, fast graphics, lots of ram (16gb), fast flash memory. And it's pretty nice, attractive package! If you need Windows for [work] I recommend this laptop very much! For the new games, do not get this unless you are ok with low settings.

This is a great laptop. I was looking for a laptop this small and this powerful and I am happy to have found one. This laptop does have very serious software issues. I have had to do multiple tweaks to keep the laptop working the way its suppose to. Examples of this are turning off the windows quick start to keep the FN key from randomly not working, and playing around with multiple settings and disabling apps just to get over 4 hours of battery. Pro: - Fast and small. - Light weight. - battery life when working properly Con: - keyboard backlight is horrible(don't know how that made it past quality check) - Can't easily uninstall apps that are actually breaking the laptop. - Battery life when it doesn't work properly. All in all this is a great laptop for anything you need to do. If you are willing to take the time to try and figure out how to get it working properly, it will become one of the best things you ever bought. Just know that it will be a headache at first.

I bought this product on sale during the holiday season. While I bought it for personal use, it rapidly was confiscated by my wife who was in dire need of a computer. It is small. very portable and not heavy. Its design is slick, screen looks great and the SSD boots the system very quickly. Set up was easy as per usual. I would love to write about the video card's capabilities and its video rendering for editing, but I never got the opportunity to do so. I can say that it handles programs like Adobe Photoshop very well. Never felt the computer overheat although I never set it on my lap. Per specs this computer is able to handle most games at 60fps but like I said never got around to do so. If you are looking for something to play videogames this certainly will do it. Also be on the lookout for the newer release of this laptop, fitted with the newer GPU's. AMD is doing a great job and we can only expect great things coming out the company.

So let me just say, that this is a short term review, because frankly, I've been feeling remorse ever since last night. So I bought this back in the beginning of July and was super excited to get it all set up and raring to go. But things did not go as planned and before I elaborate, let it be known I am writing this review on the Zephyrus G14 right as I type these words. This machine is not ready for prime time and ASUS has had 4 months to know this. This particular model has so many issues but my problem with it is one that ASUS cannot fix through software tweaks. So first the good: 120hz screen, absolutely fantastic. RTX 2060 Max-Q pumps out the frames in almost any triple A title at medium to high quality. AMD 4900HS, a productivity monster. 1TB NVMe Storage, absolutely fantastic and fast for when you have 100GB installs to deal with. Intel Wifi Absolutely Fantastic connectivity. I/O Great if a little slapdash in placement. Speakers, some of the best I've used on a laptop and that is saying something. Keyboard, as someone who uses a mechanical Desktop Keyboard mainly, this thing is smooth as butter and has no mush to the key presses. The BAD: Temps on this unit are atrociously bad, I hit 107 Celsius for those wondering that's 224 Fahrenheit, and you will feel that on the keyboard, the power button and the screen. The cooling, I don't know why they have the CPU and GPU Sharing Heat pipes, that is bad design. The backlighting on the keys is still awful, and this is coming 4 months after the release of this thing where ASUS is on record saying that they would fix the lighting. In darkness it does the job but in well lit conditions, the keyboard backlighting makes the keys harder to see. As a last nitpick I suppose the fans are not only insufficient for cooling this unit, but they also sound like you have an f-18 taking off from the carrier deck. THE ATROCIOUS: Like the title says, I wanted this to be the one but last night, 07/06/2020, I encountered the very worst this cooling has to offer. Now this laptop features three modes to operate in set by Asus, a Silent mode, lower power, but less noisy, and doesn't really heat up. A Performance mode, the mode you want to use if you're buying this machine and have no issues, maybe a little louder, but the performance is great, and lets the CPU and GPU stretch. And lastly a Turbo mode, This is an affront to the design, yes it speeds up the fans to provide better cooling, but what ASUS doesn't tell you in the software that lets you switch these modes, it also applies an ASUS set manual overclock to both the GPU and CPU. So while the fans are working harder to cool the unit in Turbo mode, the CPU and GPU are also spitting out more heat than they were before. This is all controlled by either the ASUS Armory Crate software, a terribly implemented and designed bloatware of a control software, or the integrated "Fan" Control key as a secondary function of the F5 key by holding the FN or secondary function Key and pressing F5. So with all that out of the way, I was playing Halo the Master Chief Collection with my buddies. We were playing a game of 4 player Reach Co-op Campaign, and I was having terrible lag, mainly blame that on me being in a different state on bad internet. About 3-4 Missions in, on the mission involving the Covenant Spire, I suddenly drop call and get kicked from the mission, at first I thought it booted me back to the games main menu but then I noticed everything about the Zephyrus G14 had gone off, as in shut down. Powering the laptop back on to get back into the game in a hurry, I notice it's randomly powered off completely with no warning given. Going into Hardware Info 64 I notice that the CPU on it's last log Spiked to 107 Celsius! 107! I then realized that the system shut off due to it overheating from game that caused less than 50% CPU Utilization, and less than 90% GPU Utilization. How is that possible I thought, well it is because in a test I did today, the day I am writing this review, the Laptop went back to spiking to between 102-107 Celsius, which is hotter than any laptop should get. I love ASUS Products normally but from everything I have researched and experienced so far, this is not only an unfinished product, it's unacceptable. I am returning this Laptop as soon as I can but I needed to write this review. In Summary I don't think this laptop is a good choice for anyone who doesn't want to spend time troubleshooting it for the next month. And to ASUS, I'm sorry, I wanted to like your product, I wanted this to be the AMD Laptop that proved to me AMD was ready to hit the ground running in the High-End market, but I can't in good faith say that at all about this product. I'm a technician first in this situation and I'm sorry, I don't want to have to troubleshoot my own machine less than a week after getting it, that's not a machine that is ready to be released to the general public. Maybe in the future I could try it again, but for now, this has to be hard No for me when writing this review and reliving all the experiences I had with this machine.

Just picked up this bad boy on sale. If you know anything about computer specs, this is well worth the money. Very sleek, and professional looking, which is a great plus since this will be used for my Architecture studies and 3D modeling, as well as all the PC games I love. It's on the smaller side, but great for portability, especially when I need to use it for working. My only gripe would be that there's not a lot of USB ports, but that's not really a huge deal for me, and there are always USB port splitters if I need them. No webcam, not really an issue for me either but just something to keep in mind if you need it for online meetings or calls. I've heard the backlighting for the keyboard is weak but that's also a non-issue as I never used it on laptops in the past, and the contrast on the keys is good enough to type without it. Otherwise, overall a powerful PC for the price.

I got this laptop coming off of a 2018 Razer Blade 14. The GPU performance coming from a 1060M to a 2060 Is more than noticeable. I use a dock for a one-cable desktop set up with two 1080p monitors and the GPU is able to drive anything on the second monitor with games like Rainbow 6 Siege on the main monitor while hitting at least 100 FPS. The CPU performance is nothing short of astounding with the performance on FL Studio and DaVinci Resolve incredibly fast and smooth. The CPU and the SSD together means that the overall experience in Windows is quick and snappy. The power efficiency of the Zen 2 architecture means that on battery I can easily get 8-10 hours of usage before the battery runs dry. The 120Hz display is very smooth, and the response time seems good to me, despite what others have been saying, although it could be a little brighter. The keyboard is surpisringly good for a laptop keyboard, even for someone who uses a mechanical keyboard daily; and ASUS seems to have fixed the backighting issue that was present on the review units. The build is great, and feels just as solid as a milled aluminum body like you would see on a MacBook or a Razer Blade, but it is much lighter because of the material (magnesium alloy). Overall I would say that this is easily the best value performance laptop on the market right now. The CPU alone makes it worth the value. The only downside is that since this is on the AMD platform, you do not get a thunderbolt 3 port, but the speed of the AMD CPU makes up for this and the 2 USB-C ports are both rated for 10 Gbps, which is what I drive my monitors and peripherals off of.

As a day to day laptop, it is small, lightweight and has enough battery to last through the day. As a gaming laptop, once you plug in to the power source, it displays all its truly capable of. The way I think of it as the perfect blend of business and leisure. While the laptop itself doesn’t have a camera, it does come with fingerprint scanner which is pretty reliable for fast log in. Also something that I didn’t notice until I brought it home was the quality of the speakers, they provide an excellent rich sound. Still boggles my mind how they were able to put together a machine in that can run better specs than older bulky desktops in such a small casing! Love this laptop.
