Upgrade from older ASUS RT-N66 router (2017)

    Posted .

This was purchased as a hardware upgrade from my RT-N66U which is basically an older predecessor of this model. I was looking for more current wireless standards and features to assist with TV streaming. I also like the direct-connect to fiber internet which I recently upgraded. It also supports open source firmware (I'll eventually update it to "Merlin" firmware) and has USB port for a SAMBA NAS drive. MY only gripe is that that the old router had two USB ports. This has only one.

Happy as a clam with fast Wi-Fi

No sense in giving it less stars bc a speed test is giving 40mbps download and 30mbps upload speed less than the Nokia beacon 6. I have Windstream fiber. They said it was plus n play. No lie. I’m more than happy with this router.

Working Fine - Replace Subpar Netgear Router

    Posted .

I just bought this router to replace a Netgear that failed and sent up smoke signals after two years. I had this router up and running in under 10 minutes. I have an VOIP phone which would not work properly with the previous Netgear router. Now with this ASUS router, it works fine. So far so good. The web interface is pretty nice and easy to use. I would recommend this router.

    Good but not perfect

In general, this is a good router but I believe it's a bit lacking in signal strength. We live in a small ranch house with less than 30 feet distance from the router to our bedroom and have too many signal breaks between it and our top of the line Roku device.

I have purchased this router about a month ago. It doesn't stay connected to the internet having to reset not restart every week. The only good thing is easy set-up and great range but other than this one issue I'd look for other options.

VERY Disappointed with this ASUS Router & Support

My ASUS 1900 Dual Band is one of the best routers I've ever had. I left Linkys for this router in 2012/2013 and never went back. I was excited to upgrade to the newer ASUSAX3000 since my experience was so good, and my old router is acting up. But immediately I experienced connectivity issues following the install. I had to deal with an overly complex UI that could be much better for simple at home/business use. I had to reset the router so many times. One operator told me I couldn't use characters in my passwords & username and maybe that was the issue. After close to 6 hours and 3 reps and 5 resets, I was no closer to getting the 2G to work properly than when I started. My Samsung and GoSund plugs/bulbs need 2G to work. I work on my computer off of 5G. After nearly coming to tears I gave up and reinstalled my old router. Everything is back to normal. I'll try this again in a few months. It is completely frustrating to deal with tech support who cannot help solve installation issues with these products & each conversation is strained because of language differences. It's really a hit or miss with this stuff but at $179 it shouldn't be. Maybe I got a dud, who knows, but it shouldn't be that hard to connect wifi. I'm going to get a refund tomorrow and I won't be happy about it. I hate this router.

    Worst Tech Support on earth

Bought this one and set it up. Not getting enough wifi speed. I have 1 gig package and I m getting 290Mbps max on 5ghz and 40Mbps on 2.4 ghz. I have laptop which has wireless card for only 2.4ghz. After configuring this router, it is not detecting network on laptop. Called tech support, which is I guess worst tech support in the world. They always blame device or internet provider. They just do basic troubleshooting. My laptop able to detect other 20 networks from surroundings except Asus one. In order to prove that it is not laptop issue I have disconnected router and connected with xfinity modem-router combo (xb-7). As soon as I connected my laptop connected to wifi automatically. I have updated firmware and my network driver is also updated and latest for Windows 1. I have tried all scenarios whatever I can, as I m not expecting that asus going to help me on this issue. I asked for superwisor, they said they are not available and will call in 24 to 48 hours. I don't understand, when u have issue then are u going to wait that long to fix it? Tech support is not US based so it is hard to understand their english. I am sure as this is AX router, there must be some kind of setting needed in order to detect 2.4 ghz network on laptop but this foolish called tech support don't know anything about it except restart modem and router. I will wait for their call and if they cannot fix it I will return it.
