$249 is Ridiculously Inexpensive

However, after researching the Intel Core-i3-1215U processor, I was convinced of its value and ended up buying two. These laptops offer excellent value for money, with impressive specifications for the price. One standout feature is the ease with which you can upgrade the machine: simply remove the bottom panel to add an extra 8GB of RAM for just $15, boosting the total to 16GB in a dual channel configuration. Additionally, it includes modern features such as USB-A and USB-C 3.2 ports, WiFi 6, and a PCIe Gen 4 M.2 slot—also easily accessible. The only slight drawbacks are the absence of a backlit keyboard and the use of a VA display, but these are minor concerns in an otherwise excellent budget-friendly laptop.

delivery messed up, laptop so-so

Laptop was located eventually even though customer service were completely unhelpful in the meanwhile. In the first few days of use, the most notable things about the laptop was that the screen randomly dims for no clear reason.

Stolen LapTop

Asus Vivo book X1404ZA-I38128 Ok for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Model: X1404ZA-I38128 Bought as open box, excellent condition. Smelled a bit weird. No idea why. Otherwise seems like new. Only 33 hours on the HD when tested. Had an older laptop fall apart, emergently bought a non-OLED 14" Asus Zenbook. Motherboard likely died just out of warranty and cc company refused to lift a finger despite cc free extended warranty. LOL. Bought this in place of buying MB, fan, etc., to replace components on ZenBook. Don't expect too much from the Vivobook. They cut many corners to keep price very low, on sale for $230 new. Screen is quite usable, but poor angles etc. vs most laptops. Compared to other laptops, display panel is not that dim, despite reviews noting this. So about equally bright (or dim) to some other non-OLED screens I have compared it too. Eizo screen test shows very poor motion lag. So not for gaming or video work - I think much more expensive OLED screens would be far better. Keyboard is noisy and not backlit - so get a USB light for about $10-. Plastic body - but seems to be of reasonable quality. Only 1 USB C port (unsure of speed) and cannot be used to charge battery. So separate charger is required and included in box. 128GB NVME drive is pathetically small and very slow on ATTO and CD Mark tests. Comes with 8GB RAM. Others report RAM can be upgraded by buying an 8 (or 16) GB SO DIMM and you can replace the NVME drive at the same time. Being able to upgrade the memory is a big plus as unfortunately many new laptops come with non-upgradable soldered memory. Years ago, RAM and hard drives were easy and fast upgrades and only a few screws had to be dealt with (10 screws on the back of the vivobook). There is a (service) manual you can download to show how to do these upgrades from an Asus website. I do not know if the MB can handle PCIe4 NVME speeds. But even a PCIe3 at full speed would be much faster. Easy to get rid of Windows 11 S lockdown. Just remember that many apps will not load until you do this. Denbian Linux booting off a fast thumb (500GB Patriot Rage, 512GB PNY Pro Elite V2 or similar) drive worked well. There is a major wireless issue with the vivobook Wi-Fi card. Cannot find a Linux driver for the included card. I did not open the back to replace the Wi-Fi card with a $20-40 card. However, using a Dell laptop dock, I connected Linux via ethernet to the dock and USB C from dock to vivobook (no ethernet port on vivobook). Easier solution - used the $10- 802.11n USB A mini Wi-Fi thumb drive like device from my old desktop computer. Same for slightly larger USB A BT device - ZEXMTE. So, for Wi-Fi and BT you will lose USB port(s). Could also buy a 4:1 USB port extender, etc., but I did not test using these on the vivobook for the USB Linux drive, USB Wi-Fi or USB BT sticks. The highlight is the chip: i3-1215U. Benchmarks are fast for such a low-cost laptop. Compares well to the ZenBook chip. Benchmarks are about 3 x faster than my older i3-8130U 2018 laptop. For most office and many personal tasks, not sure that this makes a big difference for day-to-day use. For even moderate level gaming, video work or other CPU / GPU intensive tasks these less expensive laptops are not what you want. Have not had vivobook long enough to say much else. In the end not sure if it would have been better to get the MB and fan parts for the ZenBook repair at a similar price, but with no guarantee of success.

BATTERY WON'T STAY CHARGED LONG

THE BATTERY! The battery would not stay charged long and I work from home, so I will be returning this laptop. The battery holds less charge than my cell phone, and I do WAY MORE on my cell phone!

Best bargain laptop when found at a sale price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I saw this laptop at BestBuy during the Black Friday promo deal listed for $199 + tax. I did look at all the reviews that I could find online for this laptop family and ASUS which were positive for the most part. First ASUS experience for me. My other laptops are HP and Acer, all of which have been great. Microsoft shopping extension on Edge browser had a link to another online site with price of $165 total including shipping. I ordered it. Arrived new in box within 3 days. Funny, it was shipped from BestBuy. Laptop is very, very good for cost. I disabled the Windows "s" mode. I made some display adjustments in settings. Display is great for a non IPS panel with a pretty good viewing angle. Display is very bright such that I set it to 38 brightness for indoor use in a room with indirect but adequate pleasant lighting. Display would be viewable when set to higher brightness level even in a daylight outdoor area. I also enabled night mode at a low level to soften the background on the display. Contrast, image sharpness and color rendering are amazing for a non IPS display. Laptop is fast for startup and "surfing" even with multiple tabs open. I do not use it for gaming as this is not a gaming configuration, and I own another laptop that is built for gaming. I have not added RAM or upgraded the hard drive. Keyboard and trackpad are responsive with a good feel. No issues with number pad feature on trackpad which I do use and switched to "off" easily. Battery life has been good. Eleven to fourteen hours between having to charge with basically being on for the duration when charged to 80 percent capacity per setting on ASUS app to promote battery health and prevent degradation, perhaps the lower brightness setting contributes to less battery drain. Also, this laptop charges fast with a very compact sized charger which contributes to the portability of this lightweight unit when travelling. I use this laptop to make online bill payments, banking transactions, video streaming, online chats/meetings, reading news articles, checking weather, receiving/sending emails and creating documents. Wi-Fi connectivity has been seamless and no issues with wireless Canon printer. No problems at all after using it for about a month. Speakers could be louder as max volume is low. However, music sounds okay in a 13x25 ft family room. I think there is some kind of built in sound enhancement that compensates for the lower max volume level. Sound is adequate and pleasant. I do wish that ASUS would provide an option for a backlit keyboard in the next iteration at near the reasonable price. However, this laptop is still excellent for the purpose for which it was designed especially at the low cost when found on sale. I think there are better options out there at the full retail price of $430. The ASUS app on the laptop is very useful for many settings, system health checks and getting firmware updates as well as options for noise cancelling for microphone and camera capture width for video meetings and chat.

No network adaptor
