Only lasted a year. My son got this for Christmas and by the next Christmas it was already broken. Would not charge. Black screen. Took it to Best Buy and was told it was prob best to buy a new one. Took it back home and disconnected the battery with some troubleshooting tips from YouTube- it started back working. Only to go go back to black screen and not turn on. Having to disconnect battery and hold power button down for one minute to reset laptop each time my son wants to get on it. Once it’s closed or goes dead it won’t restart on its own without disconnecting the battery. Total waste of money. Don’t buy.

Small and light with good performance and ports!

The Asus VivoBook is a small and light weight laptop with very battery life and a good selection of ports! Design While nothing really stands out to me about the design of the VivoBook, I think it looks fine and I do like the size and weight. The size of the screen and keyboard are comfortable for me to use. The feel of the keyboard is good for me to type on. I haven't had issues with it. It does have an inverted "T" arrow layout, though the buttons are half-height. Performance This computer feels very responsive for general use. The 11th gen, Intel i3 CPU and the 8GB of RAM combined with the SSD seem to be enough to keep it moving well. It even starts up fast. It is using Windows 11 in S Mode so while that has some limitations, it is supposed to improve security and performance. I'll talk more about S Mode later. Display The 14" screen is 1366x768. So it's higher resolution that 720p but not as high as 1080p. It works fine for playing video. A lot of people have Desktop Scaling turned on in Windows which can make things the size this display is anyway so you may not notice that you can't fit as much on the screen. I did notice sometimes where smaller text wasn't as clear as you may expect but didn't have any problems reading anything. Viewing angles are not great on it. From an angle, some things are hard to see, or the colors are not accurate. When viewing from the front, normal use, the screen looks good. Ports So many laptops, especially small ones, tend to have very few ports. Often I think they don't have enough of them. I'm very happy with the ports on the VivoBook. There is one USB 3.2 type C, one full-size HDMI, a headphone jack, three USB type A ports, two are USB 2.0 and one is USB 3.2. There is also a dedicated port for the power cord (not USB C). Battery Life I found the battery life to be very good. While I don't have specific numbers, after using it a few hours I checked and it said I had 10 hours left. I had the screen brightness at a comfortable setting, but not full. This was just general use, email, typing spreadsheets, and things like that but I thought it was very good. Windows 11 S Mode For the most part, it looks and feels the same as regular Windows. It improves on performance and security by requiring that all apps installed are from the Microsoft Store. That means apps have been approved and designed to work a certain and approved way. So that helps with security and can help performance because Windows doesn't need to worry about backward app compatibility since everything is a current type of app. So before you plan to use S Mode, make sure the apps you need are available on the Windows Store. As I mentioned at the beginning, I'm happy with the performance of this. I'm not sure how much of that is due to S Mode. You can switch it to standard Windows 11, non-S mode, and then run any Windows programs, but if you do that you cannot switch back to S Mode. Summary I was impressed for a low-cost Windows 11 laptop. The performance is better than I was expecting and generally feels snappy and responsive to me for general use like working with documents, web browsing, and email. The screen is really best viewed straight on but on the other hand there are a bunch of ports to work with which can be very helpful. If the 128GB SSD is enough for your needs and you're good with apps from the Microsoft Store, this is a laptop to consider!

Solid Entry Laptop with Room to Expand

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

On the whole, this is a solid entry-level laptop from a great company in Asus. Like any entry level product, it has some concessions to maintain a price point - some of which impact day to day use more than others. Is it the right laptop for you? Read on to find out!! Out of the box, the laptop provides a solid if somewhat basic experience. The build quality is solid though the laptop is mostly plastic in nature it still doesn't feel cheap. The hinge is solid and the typing experience and touchpad are good and highly useable - higher end ASUS laptops feel more premium of course, but this will certainly get you by. Windows feels fairly snappy on initial startup and doesn't have much / anything in the way of "bloat" that isn't standard Windows stuff. It is Windows 11 Home in S Mode which does not allow install of application outside of the Windows store (which is good for some since it limits ability to install malware) but this can easily be turned off with a quick download from the Windows store (oddly enough). The screen is clear and bright, though a bit lower resolution than others at 1366 x 768, though at the 14" screen size, some folks turn the "zoom" / scaling up to 125%-150% anyhow - this is roughly equivalent to taking a 14" 1080p screen and turn it to 140% scaling. Battery life is solid for an entry device - I'm seeing about ~4 hours of normal office / web use and charging is quick via the included ac adapter. Unfortunately, USB-C charging is NOT supported here. The laptop has a good array of ports with USB-C, USB-A, HDMI and a headphone jack all on offer. All work just fine but note that the USB-C port is limited to 3.2 Gen 1 or 5GB/s and does not support video out or power delivery charging. Base specifications are solid with the 11th Gen Core i3 processor providing plenty of power for day to day work and even a few more taxing tasks like light/moderate development and maybe even some retro gaming (nothing high end on the gaming front - and higher end tasks will impact battery life). One big thing this laptop gets right is expansion - with the remove of a few screws you can pop the bottom off the device to reveal an open SODIMM RAM slot (the 8GB onboard is soldered to the motherboard). I popped in a second DDR4 3200mhz laptop RAM stick to get to 16GB total - I assume you could also use a 16GB stick to get to 24GB but did not test this. You can also add storage BUT you would either have to copy the existing 128GB SSD to a bigger drive (easily doable with third party software - and it's a standard 2280 M.2 SSD which is easily replaced) OR find a cable to attach a 2.5" HDD or SSD (which there is space for in the chassis and a mount point for. The battery and a few other components are also accessible at this point for future replacement if needed. This is EXCELLENT upgradability in this class. With the 16GB of RAM, I was EASILY able to power through my work day (with the laptop plugged in), using all manner of browser tabs, office apps and so on - many more things than you could open with 8GB of RAM So where does that leave us? A solid entry laptop that offers good expandability for the future from a known name that trades a few "would like to have" (a full function USB-C port that supports video/power would be the biggest, a 1080p screen would be nice) to stay entry level / easy on the wallet. Is it right for you? Well only you can decide that!

Great choice - more than what you'd expect

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I would certainly recommend this product to anyone who's looking for a low-cost laptop (though not completely barebones) that gets the job done without making too many compromises. In fact, in many areas, it offers a bit more than what I'd expect for around $250 on sale. Having purchased this laptop in open-box excellent condition, I was somewhat skeptical of its condition and capabilities - especially considering this laptop is priced more in the "budget" tier. That perception has definitely changed after a few days of use. I would say the performance and battery life are good, if not great - for this class of PC. The 11th gen Core i3 processor features a fairly new architecture, but the dual-core design made me wary at first. After some use, the chip seems more than adequate for light to medium workloads. Seems more than fair for the price. Battery life, on the other hand, is also decent - nothing special, by any means, but it should get you by just fine. The included 8GB of DDR4 RAM is good for multitasking, and the SSD, while low in capacity, allows for a quick startup. Having SSD storage and not eMMC (a common way manufacturers save money on budget laptops by soldering a memory card to the motherboard itself) is a fair tradeoff, in my opinion. The main con of this device is the average display - while good enough for most, it is slightly lacking compared to PCs you can find for $75-$100 more. Viewing angles are OK, and that is expected for this price point, but the 720p resolution could be at least 1080p for this class. Brightness is good, and actual screen quality is fine. The all-plastic build, despite sounding very low-quality, is fairly durable and lightweight. The device doesn't look all that bad, in fact, its looks are better than you'd think for just $250. All in all, I'd say this was a good buy for me and a great low-cost daily driver for most. Try to get this on sale for $250 rather than paying the full $430 for this.

Absolute violation of consumer protection laws. The advertised specifications of this laptop are purposely incorrect. Myself and others have complained this unit does not have a touch screen or 12g of RAM. Best buy is very aware of this and won't do anything for the customer's who have purchased this laptop. The ASUS Vivobook 14” Laptop has an Eleventh generation I3 Core, there also is an 8 Gigabyte of DDR4 memory card with 1 expansion slot. The 128 Gigabyte SSD hard disk. The 128 GB SSD hard disk will fill up rather quickly as you move from the S-Mode to open mode. The right-side of the laptop contains a Mini Headphone/Headset port, 2 USB 2.0 ports and a security slot. The left-side of the laptop contains a power port, a USB 3.2 Generation 1 Type-C port, a HDMI output port, and a USB 3.2 Generation 1 port. The Vivobook is equipped with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. The ASUS Vivobook is a small frame laptop with entry level parts. The Vivobook has enough computing power for the student/Home user or lite gamer. The High-Definition screen is 1366 X 768, while the Best Buy site lists this laptop as touchscreen, it is not. I was able to load the complete Microsoft Office package and use all features without any problems. I use Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint. The Wi-Fi range is good. I was about 140 feet from the router through a wood wall and a red brick wall on the house. I could not locate any data on the battery life, but I noticed that I was getting around 4 hours before needing a recharge. The power supply quickly recharged the battery back to 100 percent within 2 ½ hours.

The sales representative lied about this purchase. The laptop was on sale but when I provided my cc she handled all of the yes or no questions on the screen. And all of sudden when given the receipt the total had a +150 charge to the sale price. I was a bit confused and when I went back to ask she said I could only get the sale if I was added to the Best Buy membership and the outlook promo. The laptop was a gift and I didn’t want to question it more next to my mom who I was gifting it to. However, I called the next day to the customer service line and was told that wasn’t the case. I was then returned 100 dollars for those two charge. Mind you those charge were not one time payments, they were memberships that will be chargers YEARLY. I was never told this when I went to the store. Conclusion: never buying anything from Best Buy. Learned my lesson.

We ended up turning this laptop back in and exchanging it for iPad. It was for my exchange student who wanted to purchase some thing with his money that he had left over. When we got it and brought it home, we were able to connect it to the Internet, but he was not able to download anything, because any time we went into the Microsoft App Store, it would never load.

      Dear BryanP,

We certainly understand your disappointment and the inconvenience this may have caused.

If you're unable to dowload anything most likely, this is either related to a poor and unstable internet connection, or network traffic from the update server.
