A nice productivity laptop with a few cheap parts

The latest Asus Zenbook 14" laptop is a worthy entry into the productivity lineup. It has some quality components but I was not "wowed" by this laptop. What I like: -The screen is very bright (500 nits). I had no trouble seeing the screen in a daylight lit room and the viewing angles seemed to be pretty good as well. -Battery life is pretty good if not great. With the screen at full brightness and a repeating video playing the battery lasted about 6hrs before it reached 5%. -16GB memory is great for multitasking productivity apps. Everything seemed to flow smoothly. -The Intel Ultra 7 has 16 cores which I love for certain image and video editing apps that I use. That's nice for a relatively entry level processor. -The laptop feels quite light at under 3lbs. -I REALLY like that despite being a thin and light laptop there is a full size HDMI port on it, as well as two USB-C and 1 USB-A port. That means I don't have to use a USB-C adapter for attaching a TV or second monitor. What I don't like: -The processor is just OK. I was expecting more. For example it takes a rather long time to boot up, even from sleep. Many of the cores are low power cores which means less power but also slower. 1.4ghz core speed isn't great these days. -The case feels a little cheap to me. It's thin plastic and "gives" more than I would like. -Asus bloatware. All in all this is a nice laptop, but I think there are better options at this price point.

Wonderful computer, is Touch and Pen enabled!

I would like to nominate this computer for best all-round laptop of 2024, as it will serve almost everybody very well for their computing needs. There are several reviews of this machine on the Internet that describe all its features, but I would like to emphasize some points that are most meaningful to me: 1) The build quality is excellent. This device is solid, feels premium, and substantial, while weighing under 3 lbs! (The lid does collect your fingerprints, however.) 2) The spectacular OLED display is wondrous to behold, even if it is only FHD+. On a 14in screen, this resolution is fine for me, but I can see some pixels if I study the screen from 4 inches away. The advantages of FHD include longer battery life and possibly reduced eyestrain. I absolutely do not feel the need for more resolution during normal use. 3) I am surprised that marketing material for this configuration does not mention Touch and Pen inputs. Since the screen can extend 180 degrees back, it is quite easy to use a pen for taking notes, signatures, and drawing figures. There is no need for opening the device to 360 degrees for this function. Note that any stylus with the Microsoft Pen Protocol will work; I am using my Surface Pro stylus, and all the functions work except for the “click to open” shortcut. (I guess they could have provided a stylus, ah well…) 4) The Meteor Lake processor is the newest and best. There is an AI function built in, which “future proofs” this computer for AI applications coming soon. 5) Typing on the keyboard is a dream, and I think the track pad is outstanding, even though it is mechanical and not haptic. 6) Battery life really is phenomenal. Super-fast charging too! 7) Windows Hello with facial recognition has been instantaneous for me. 8) 1080p webcam assists with professional looking virtual meeting sessions, and the speakers are the best laptop speakers I have ever heard- loud and clear, quite lifelike. What don’t I like about this computer? In fact, very little. If I really needed a 3K display and more RAM, there is a configuration for that. However, the Zenbook q450 has a feature set that is perfect for me. I can recommend it highly to a student, remote worker, or professional who needs a compact and capable computer.

    Great little Ultrabook

Laptops have come a long way in the last few years. New chips, coolers, and case designs have made it easier than ever to throw what's essentially an entire desktop computer into your bag and lug it around town. But capable little machines like the Zenbook make a great argument for why, sometimes, maybe you shouldn't. The Zenbook may not be the slimmest ultrabook on the market, but you're not likely to notice without a side by side comparison. The angular design and gunmetal gray finish gives it a sleek, almost blade-like appearance. The lines are only really broken up by some thick rubber feet and bumpers, which I have to say I'm very glad to see as they do a lot to protect the vulnerable rear edge of the screen and give the cooling system plenty of room to breathe (which, trust me, it needs.) Build quality is good overall. The chassis is prone to flexing which is more or less unavoidable at this size, but when it's set on a solid desk or table you really don't notice as much and even after several days of near exclusive lap-use there are still no signs of any permanent warping. The screen hinge also feels quite sturdy, a necessity if you're planning to make use of the touch screen. And the keyboard has some quite firm and pleasantly tactile keys that feel like they can stand up to a lot of punishment without loosening up or breaking off. As far as the overall usage experience goes, this really is the perfect "grab-and-go" machine. It fits very comfortably in my lap even when dealing with cramped public transportation seating, the i7 CPU is satisfyingly zippy (if a little warm after a while,) and the battery can easily last for multiple days of light-to-moderate use and get a top-up from a standard cell phone charger in a pinch. The fact that I can pull it out in a waiting room, bang out a few paragraphs in my book, then close it up and get right back to it an hour later on the bus ride home adds quite a lot of value that you can't get with more technically capable machines. It also doesn't hurt that the OLED screen is absolutely gorgeous when running on full power - offering a great platform for media consumption or the occasional photo work. Really the only somewhat complaint I have is that I don't feel like the touchscreen adds all that much value. Without a 180 degree hinge that would allow it to convert into a large tablet, I just don't find them to be particularly user friendly in most cases. I might feel a little differently if I drew more though - one thing I do like is that the screen can fold back far enough to let the laptop basically lay flat on a work surface at which point using a capacitive pen feels very natural. So, in conclusion, this is not the "do everything" machine. This is the machine that picks its battles, and focuses on trying to do a few things very, very well. This makes it an ideal laptop for frequent travelers, students looking to take notes and do course work, or anyone who expects to regularly venture out into the field.

Solid laptop at this price point. The keyboard and case all feel very sturdy and the display is bright, crisp. The CPU performance is decent while multitasking. The only negative I've experienced is the computer seems to get hot rather quickly. The fan kicks on high under pretty limited stress.

Overall, I'm really impressed with this laptop! Let's go over what it has going for it... SCREEN - The image is very nice and clear. As you might expect from a high-level laptop, colors are crisp and the contrast is sharp. AUDIO - This is something that has fallen out of favor with manufacturers in the past 20 years, but they actually put in some nice sounding speakers! I know people generally use headphones or have speakers connected when at home, but if you happen to be out in private, the audio quality is really nice (please be conscientious of people around you and don't just blast your music...). CONNECTIVITY - It is a little cheap that you only have one USB-A port (full-size USB), but it is really nice that you have 2 USB-C/thunderbolt ports! You can connect to a docking station when at home, as with most any modern computer, but having 2 is great for travel. Most portable monitors connect through a USB-C, and if it doesn't have power-delivery, then your computer is drained that much faster. With having 2, you can connect a second screen and still use the charger. It is also nice to have a full-size HDMI port should you want to connect to a TV to share pictures or video, or run a presentation for work. Otherwise, the headphone jack, wifi, and bluetooth all work as you would expect. BATTERY - If you're running graphics-intensive games, you may get about 3 hours or so. However, streaming videos online results in about a 12-hour capacity, and even longer if you're doing, you know, actual work. So, unless you're gaming, you're going to get a full day of power out of this machine. It is a nice addition to have a physical barrier that you can close on the web-cam. If you're the paranoid type, no more putting a post-it or band-aid over the camera, you can just slide the physical barrier to close it off. The slider is also nicely textured which serves a dual-purpose of providing a textured space that you can feel when you go to open the laptop. The hinge is sturdy enough to hold the screen securely, but also light enough to allow you to open the laptop one-handed. They found the sweet spot. :)

Laptop body has a nice solid feel. No sharp edges. Does fairly well at hiding fingerprints. Camera has a built-in privacy slider that displays a noticeable (not necessarily obnoxious, but some may find it unappealing) orange color when in privacy mode, so there’s no doubt when it’s on. However, it’s also somewhat easy to accidentally engage/disengage the slider when opening the lid, so keep that in mind. Speaking of the lid, it’s also balanced well enough that you can usually open it without having to hold the laptop body down. OLED display is crisp, with excellent color. Auto brightness is subtle & appropriate. Bezel size is probably what I’d consider average. USB-C ports are both on the same side; would have preferred that they have one on each side instead. Probably a bit nitpicky on my part, but sometimes it’s just more convenient to not have a cord strung all the way across a desk or your lap. Speakers are better than what I expected from a laptop this size. Bigger soundstage than I’ve typically heard from small laptops, and there’s little to no noticeable muffling when you’re using it as a true ‘lap’top. Battery life has been fairly impressive as well, getting at least a couple of hours while gaming, with plenty to spare. Overall, I'm really enjoying this laptop, and it's become my daily go-to.

    Big Wow Factor

This 14" Zenbook surprised me with the beautiful quality of the display. The price point of a touch-screen is a big factor when considering a new laptop, this screen doesn't disappoint one bit. Very responsive and very detailed. TV and YouTube look amazing, so much that entertainment will probably be my number one use for this Zenbook. Another plus for the entertainment factor--the sound. This has a Harmon Kardon audio package and the quality of the sound thru the almost invisible speakers is very good. Amazing bass from something so thin and lightweight. It sounds even better when paired with a high-end set of Bluetooth headphones. Imagine Dragons "Thunder" was a new experience, just awesome. I tried some processor-taxing things on it like Photoshop Elements and there was no disappointment there either. This Zenbook is fast and snappy, with only a little heat produced when working it hard with photo editing. While not a fan of Windows 11, it did seem a lot less clumsy and ordinary in this machine, probably due to the great graphics. And this Zenbook is thin and lightweight, very easy to tote along in a small case. I already have a Surface with a great display, but this has better sound.

The ASUS - Zenbook 14 OLED 14” WUXGA Touch Laptop, Intel Core Ultra 7 - Intel Evo Edition - 16GB Memory - 1TB SSD - Jasper Gray, is an extremely lightweight laptop that can function just as a powerful desk top does. I was able to have it up and running connected to the internet in no time at all. It is definitely user friendly, with its simple set up process. The ability to use the touch screen, as well as the keyboard, can save time when inputting data and can simplify data entry. Audio and visual functions are great with deep pixelation displaying sharp colors and defined lines, showing no blurring. I was able to drag the video out of its frame and drag it to another part of the screen. The volume is loud enough for listening within a small room. The ASUS - Zenbook 14 OLED 14” WUXGA Touch Laptop, Intel Core Ultra 7 - Intel Evo Edition - 16GB Memory - 1TB SSD - Jasper Gray has multiple inputs for USB-C, HDMI, and SD cards. I was able to open several windows, without slowing up hard drive resources. The Intel processor can handle several tasks at the same time, allowing me to complete my tasks quickly and efficiently. After two weeks of usage, I have found no problems with the ASUS - Zenbook 14 OLED 14” WUXGA Touch Laptop, Intel Core Ultra 7 - Intel Evo Edition - 16GB Memory - 1TB SSD - Jasper Gray and am totally happy with its functionality.
