    Lightweight & Compact Basic Laptop

The Asus ZenBook is definitely a compact, lightweight unit for those who don’t need a lot out of a laptop. While it has up-to-date technology, there’s nothing that makes it stand out, except for its small size and portability. Unboxing was a confusing experience. Normally, this is straightforward process, but somehow the labelling made it appear as if there was no “up” from which to open the box. Then, once the box was opened, the mechanism inside that gently lifts the laptop, to present it to the user, was slightly off, causing the laptop to become skewed, not lift, and subsequently difficult to extract. Initial setup was also strewn with difficulties that are normally not present. The power cord, for example, is much shorter than what I’m accustomed to. Whereas the cord on the laptop that I’m using to write this review has lots of slack to allow me to move around the table, the cord on the Asus is stretched taut as it has no slack at all. This would require a user, during travel, to have to be located very physically near an outlet to allow for charging. Another example of a setup head-scratcher was the logging into of Microsoft. I have an existing account that I use for just this situation, but MS would not recognize it. When I tried to create a new MS account, using the same info, MS reported that my requested username was already in existence…because it is…I’m using it. While I recognize that this is an MS issue, not an Asus issue, it was a sticking point, regardless. It’s not all bad, however. The display is fantastic. I purchased an LG OLED 4K UHD television several years ago because of the display. The colors are rich, and the blacks are black. The display on this laptop rivals that television. It’s extremely clear, with fantastic color saturation, and the graphics, while nothing to write home about, do a great job of filling out the display. The combination of the touchpad and the number pad is innovative; I’ve never seen that done before. Until I became used to it, I was always second-guessing myself as to whether I had hit the correct “buttons”. Without the tactile feedback of a button being “clicked” or depressed, I needed to confirm my accuracy. Finally, the ability of the screen to be laid back until it is flat is very helpful. The size and portability of the device allows it to be easily transported anywhere, but if it’s being used for assistance, such as a YouTube tutorial, one doesn’t want to always have to sit down to view the screen, then immediately stand back up again to perform the next task. Laying the screen flat allows one to stand over the laptop and easily view the screen without the glare one would expect. As discussed before, the excellent display allows this to happen. Overall, my perception is that this is a great starter laptop with basics that can be expanded upon in future purchases. It’s compact and lightweight, meaning that it can be easily transported for some distance/time. However, once the battery is depleted, the short charging cable requires the user to be very near an open outlet. Any issues experienced during setup are the responsibility of Microsoft, not Asus, but it’s worth noting as it may change Asus’s suppliers in the future. The functionality is great, especially the display. If one is using it while amid activity, the lay-flat screen adds efficiency by allowing the user to stand over it and continue viewing, and the graphics and colors don’t wash out. There is some innovation shown here that I would suspect appears in later and/or higher-end models in the future, such as the number pad overlay onto the touchpad. It does take some getting used to, but it works. If you feel uncomfortable with, or simply don’t want to, complete transactions on your mobile device, or tablet, this is the unit for you. It’s not a gaming system, and it’s not for pure business. It’s a vanilla, middle-of-the-road device that fills the gap between mobile devices and the need for a dedicated computer.

Fantastic Laptop Amazing OLED super bright screen

Seriously great laptop - the OLED display is amazing 90hz refresh and super bright and sharp, unlike any other laptop imo. Nice solid metal case that looks very premium. I like the USB-C ports that charges and carries the video signal to my 4k 27" monitor without any problems. The intel i5 12th gen cpu works well for my use and doesnt get too warm. The cool feature is the numeric keys on the trackpad, a very innovative and useful feature. I am coming from a macbook air M2 which is a great machine but for 1/2 the price and a better screen this Asus Zenbook is actually better imo. I switched back to a PC because I was tired of using mac os and especially finder which was very frustrating to use when looking for files for real work. My only complaint is the memory cannot be upgraded which I really don't understand why asus did this. Also, windows 11 isn't very good - the metro tiles looked better imo, at least they were interesting. Overall this has been a great laptop and the OLED screen alone is worth the price (on sale) at bestbuy if they have it in stock!

I've had this computer just over 3 weeks and so far like it quite a bit. Very lightweight yet feels sturdy. The backlit keyboard is much better than some other brands I've used. (Hear that HP?) The display colors were a bit over saturated as another reviewer wrote but going into the My Asus app I easily changed the color setting from Vivid to Normal and fixed the problem. The touchpad is a bit sensitive if you rest your hands on it but that's a minor issue. Having the touchpad display a 10 key number pad is very clever. I'm not sure how often I'll use it but It is a unique way to add 10 key in a small footprint. My one frustration was with the ports- there's only one USB A port. All my devices connect that way so I had to hunt to find adapter to go from A device to C input to connect several at the same time. But once I got an adaptor, the problem was solved for about $10. Overall this is a very nice computer for the price. An added plus is there isn't a ton of useless bloatware loaded on it, unlike most other brands. An additional USB A would have put it at 5 stars.

Beautiful display, decent cpu and graphics, nice features, super lightweight and portable. I personally use it for school and it can last about 2 days of school use without needing a charge when using power saver. I purchased mine open box for $380 which was an absolute steal for these specs

This is a very serviceable laptop for the masses. The specs are enough to reliably run most games without going crazy with it, so it will work well for regular web-browsing and document work as well. The main differentiating factor between this laptop and others is the screen. This is a Pantone Verified screen, which means that it is standardized for the appearance of colors. The colors are more vibrant on this screen than on my HP Spectre laptop (which cost almost twice as much), and definitely look good. This also means that this is a screen that will be good for people doing visual arts, since you know what the image/video will look like on other (Pantone Verified) displays. Other points worth noting: - Battery Life: You’ll probably get between 5 and 6 hours of use on a charge. When I tested this, it was with the screen on about 80% brightness streaming videos on YouTube. - Build Quality: Fantastic. The metal case has a modern design and feels very sturdy and premium. - Ports: You have 2 Thunderbolt ports (excellent) so you can connect to a docking station and still have another type-C port open for an accessory if needed, 1 regular USB port, 1 HDMI port (also not typically found on slim laptops anymore), and a micro-SD card reader and headphone jack. Overall – this is a great laptop at a fair price. The only potential limiting factor that I see is the battery life of about 6 hours. If this amount of time isn’t an issue for you, then this laptop is a great option.

So far so good. I am a little concerned about the software updates though. After purchasing and setting up my device, it had an update. The update completely disabled my ability to connect to wifi. There is no ethernet port. I had to restore my software version to the previous setting on order to get it to work again. It's a little stressful because it's ready for another update! Fingers crossed. Other than that, it's been a solid little computer for the time I've had it. I work from home, mostly cloud based programs and it works great.

    Crippled by Unfixable Bluetooth Problems

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Let me start off by saying that nearly everything about this laptop is excellent. The screen is fantastic; bright, super high resolution, color accurate -- everything you would expect from an OLED. The build is also great. The keyboard and touchpad work well, and the chasis is extremely sturdy aluminum. Notably, though, 8 gb of ram on this device is not even close to enough, as the device uses 5.5 gb of 7.5 usable with no apps open. I was okay with this due to the price tag compared to competitors. Battery life isn't as good as you would expect either, despite the 75 wh battery. Fans spin sometimes, but aren't loud enough to be irritating. With that said, a few weeks after purchasing, I tried to pair my bluetooth headphones to this laptop to watch a movie on a flight. They would only connect as "voice only" within windows settings, and in practice, were unusable. After 30 seconds of being connected voice only, they can be used, but they have the audio quality of a phone headset, not a proper set of headphones. I figured this probably was a fluke, and spent a bit troubleshooting. Windows' bluetooth troubleshooter came up with nothing. No settings could be changed to fix the issue. I tried various other bluetooth headphones (5 total) all with the same result. Factory resetting Windows with a clean install did not fix the issue. After more than 3 hours of troubleshooting and a call to customer support, they recommended sending the device out for repair. Unfortunately, I was just outside of the 14 day Best Buy return/exchange window, but I gave in and just sent it out for repair. For whatever reason, Asus and Best Buy have a strange deal where this computer has to be repaired through geeksquad, not directly though Asus. There is no charge, of course, but still strange. My local Geek Squad shipped the device across the country to a repair center, and the wait began. After a few days, I got a notification that they found the issue with the computer, and ordered parts. The site said parts were in stock. A week later, the status was the same, and when I called, they said the parts were backordered. Fine, I thought. The laptop is brand new, and was just released a few months ago, they likely don't have many spare parts nor many coming in for repair. I finally got the computer back after over 3 weeks (by law, they have to replace the device after 4), and the night I tested the bluetooth, all was well. They had replaced the motherboard and bluetooth card, basically the entire brains of the computer. The next day, I attempted to watch a video and I was back to having the same bluetooth issue. I gave up at that point. I went to Best Buy and explained my dilemma, and even though I was out of the return window, they let me exchange it for a brand new laptop. The new one didn't work either. I took it back to Best Buy again and exchanged it for a surface laptop. No more wasted time or effort troubleshooting. The surface laptop has 0 issues with bluetooth. While it isn't as fast, and has a worse display, the battery life is much better and its fans barely ever spin up, compared to moderate frequency on the Zenbook. And the bluetooth has worked perfectly. Don't buy this unless you absolutely will never use bluetooth audio devices.

A visual delight with a gorgeous screen and sound

Many other reviewers have stated how gorgeous the screen looks and I fully concur. It almost looks live and not like a computer screen. How they accomplished this feat at this price point is absolutely amazing. It looks like computer screens costing at least twice to three times what this computer costs. However, if used in direct sun it does look a bit washed out, but that is not where most folks including me will use it. As most others have noted, the refresh rate is superb as well as color saturation. The display is clearly the primary reason to buy this computer. I was a little skeptical of the 8GB of Ram, but it is surprisingly not a big limitation. Not sure how they accomplish this, but it behaves similarly to another laptop I own with 16 GB of Ram running Windows 11. I did upgrade the SSD to 1TB as the stock 256GB was too limiting for me. Now that you can purchase a top of the line 1 TB SSDs (Samsung) for $160, it is a no-brainer to upgrade storage capacity. Only wish this was an option offered from the factory instead of requiring the user to upgrade it. The 10 key pad built in to the track pad takes a bit getting used to, but it is a brilliant idea. The exterior cover is very sleek and looks like a much more expensive computer. Even the box it comes in opens to display the laptop in all it's beauty. They certainly concentrated on visual experiences with the computer - others will need to catch up. The sound was surprisingly good as well as I did not have high expectations with this form factor. I also like the three level adjustable backlit keyboard which was a first experience for me. They hit all the marks with available ports featuring HDMI, USB-C Thunderbolt, and USB-A to cover all bases. Included is a 65 watt charger using USB-C. Simple and universal connectivity without carrying a bunch of dongles. The cooling fan is not too loud and does a pretty good job keeping things cool. On the nitpick side, battery was OK but not top of class. I got about 7 to 8 hours average use - again not bad for this price point. I am not a gamer, so cannot comment on working the processor hard. My primary use is e-mails / Office and watching a few videos, but heavy duty gaming is not what this computer was built for. If you are an average user and want a great visual experience, a compact form factor, and universal connectivity without using dongles, this is your computer. Power users will want to get something more capable with upgrade to processor and Ram. For it's intended use, it is a solid winner in my book. Highly recommended!

Looks just as good and feels just as well made. I have been a pc laptop guy for years. I use Apple phone and ipad, but the Air, Nah.
